Join Alberta Craft and Mireille Perron for the reception of her solo Discovery Gallery exhibition, Rebus Plates For Our Times . A rebus is a type of riddle that combines images and individual letters to represent words or phrases. In the 19th century, French rebuses printed on ceramic plates became popular. These plates often featured riddles on the back and covered a wide range of themes, from moral lessons to social and political commentary. The inspiration for this series came from a plate given to Mireille Perron by the well known Calgary ceramist Greg Payce. It took her years to decipher the phrase inscribed on the plate, as the answer had been erased. Two years ago, she finally uncovered its meaning: “Les Rebus illustrés sont très à la mode par les temps qui courent” (Illustrated rebuses are very popular in our times). This discovery led her to create a new collection of rebus plates reflecting the issues we face today. Mireille Perron’s exhibition blends the art of 19th-century rebus plates with a powerful message for our time. This year, the Ukrainian Film Festival in Alberta (UFFA) will showcase a selection of contemporary films about Ukraine in Edmonton and Calgary. These critically acclaimed films have received international recognition and won numerous awards. Over two weekends, festival-goers will have the opportunity to experience some of the most outstanding works of contemporary Ukrainian cinema. The UFFA is co-organized by the Alberta Society for the Advancement of Ukrainian Studies and the Forum for Ukraine Studies , an analytical publication project of the Contemporary Ukraine Studies Program at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, University of Alberta. The festival is held in cooperation with the Ukrainian Resource and Development Centre at MacEwan University and with financial support from the City of Calgary. Can you survive the Zombie Apocalypse? Edmonton Zombie Scavenger tests your ability to survive after a zombie apocalypse. The game leads you through the city, where you will have 60 minutes to collect supplies to survive during this interactive scavenger game. With the whole world in chaos and zombies outnumbering the living 10 to 1, small colonies of the living are doing all they can to survive. Using your smartphone, your team will be tasked with scavenging the city for food, supplies, weapons, and shelter. The more things you find, the more points you get, the more likely you are to survive. Along the way, you will be asked to do a challenge or answer a trivia question in order to be rewarded with virtual weapons to ward off the zombies. The area is crawling with relentless zombies, and rival colonies are moving in. If you get too relaxed, rival colonies will take what you worked hard to find. The goal is to find all of the items in hopes that you will survive the zombie apocalypse. Scavenger Rules: In 1 hour your team of up to 10 people will use a smartphone to search the area for much-needed food, supplies, and shelter. The more things you find in the 1 hour, the more points you get and more likely you would be a survivor. The task will not be easy. Along the way, you will be asked to do some challenges or answer some trivia questions. The goal is to get at least 4000 points in 1 hour in order to survive the zombie apocalypse! The 'City of Champions' is to honour another of its victorious sporting teams, but the beaten finalists from a rival city have stolen the roster names from a local engraver. Can you find them in time for the trophy presentation? This is a FUN way to explore Edmonton's downtown - while staying indoors!
