Running
Lochaber is a skyrunner's paradise - big ridges, big views and a big reputation for some of the best Skyraces in the UK. Between Glencoe and Fort William there's no shortage of options (see our Running Challenges guidebook for examples!) In 2015, Glencoe became home to the UK's first ever skyrace (Skyline Scotland), which grew to feature both the Ring of Steall Skyrace (a Golden Trail World Series race) and the iconic Salomon Glen Coe Skyline®. For a time, these races attracted top athletes from across the globe and were part of the UK Skyrunning Calendar and World Skyrunning Series. For 2025 the event has moved to nearby Fort William, where we can soon expect 10 new iconic races - all taking place on September 20th (race routes TBC). The event centre will be Nevis Range, ideally located beneath the UK's highest mountain, Ben Nevis. Girls on Hills has been the official guided recce provider for Skyline Scotland since 2019 and you can see all of our 2025 race recces via www.girlsonhills.com (see Events). Our Co-Founder and guide Keri Wallace works as part of the UK Skyrunning Media Team. She also previously competed in the UK Skyrunning Team and more finished 3rd in the Skyrunning UK National Series in 2023. Several of our other guides have also raced events such as the Glencoe Skyline, Ring of Steall and Ben Nevis Ultra, as well as other skyraces across the UK. Our guides know these mountains inside out - as locals, as runners and for some, as Glencoe MRT members too. To join Scottish Skyrunning, runners should have a good level of fell running/hill fitness and a bit of a 'head for heights’ (i.e. not have vertigo!), to get the most out of the weekend. But you DON'T need skyrace experience or to be a fast runner! We'll be taking a sociable pace with plenty of walking mixed-in. If you’re not sure if this is for you, then please just drop us an email and ask. Join us to learn more about skyrunning or just to experience some of the best ridge-running the UK has to offer. To find out more about skyrunning and what it involves, read our summary articles here: www.womensrunning.co.uk/motivation/what-is-skyrunning/ www.ukhillwalking.com/articles/features/what_is_skyrunning_and_how_do_i_get_into_it-11157 www.ukclimbing.com/articles/features/no_climbing_experience_no_race__the_future_of_extreme_skyrunning-12249 ROUTES The exact routes taken will depend on the weather and composition of the group. However, any of the following could be on the itinerary: Ring of SteallBen Nevis/Carn Mor Dearg AreteThree Sisters of GlencoeMamores MunrosLochaber 4000sThe 4 Buachailles of GlencoeBOOKING Girls on Hills is a 'no-frills' experience - we don't include food or accommodation, allowing you the flexibility to choose your own to suit travel logistics or budget. There is plenty of budget accommodation locally, including hostels/bunkhouses/pods. We can offer a shuttle service to/from local accommodation, and are committed to making your logistics work. We will email you at the beginning of event week. This email will confirm meet location, as well as information on what to wear and bring with you. We will meet up to check kit and discuss final plans for each day over coffee before we start! We pride ourselves on being 'approachable and relatable' so please do get in touch with any concerns or queries you might have now or nearer to the event. We look forward to having some fun and showing you some great skyrunning in home of Scottish Skyrunning. * Please note that the weekend will NOT include either the Aonach Eagach or Curved ridge and you can expect a maximum of grade 1 scrambling terrain. Nevertheless, you may be required to read and sign a disclaimer ahead of the weekend. Girls on Hills’ insurance does not protect you as an individual. We advise that you treat this course as you would any travel/extreme sports activity, and take out your own insurance. www.girlsonhills.com/terms-and-conditions Information Source: Girls on Hills Ltd | eventbrite

Girls on Hills Ltd is the exclusive and recommended recce provider for Skyline Scotland. We are delighted to offer this official guided recce day for the Jacobite 100 ultra trail race. 'This is an ultra-running journey through the Scottish Highlands with an exciting midnight mass start, utilising established paths and trails to weave through the glens, along lochs, and pass over mountain bealachs. The Jacobite 100 is a runnable 100km with a Scottish Highland journey at the heart of the race experience' - Skyline Scotland The recce is open to both men and women, and will be led by a local and professionally qualified running guide, who also has first-hand experience of Skyline Scotland events. You can therefore be assured of a safe, high quality experience with someone who is extremely knowledgeable about the area, event and race route. Your guided recce will be Summer Mountain Leader qualified as a mimumim and there will be a maximum group ratio of 1:6 You do not need to have a race entry to participate in this event, but you do need an appropriate level of endurance running fitness. The guided day will allow you to recce highlights and remote sections of the race route and size-up the magnitude of the undertaking to inform race-day pacing and strategy. The route taken will be as follows: SATURDAY Bridge of Orchy to Glen Etive (the first 42km/500m of the race route), finishing at the Coiletir crossing over the River Etive. This is a wild an inescapable section of the race route. Therefore, it is not possible to retire part-way or break the recce into shorter sections. It will be tackled with a 'go through or go-back' approach! Your recce may involve an early start (weather dependent) and will include transportation from the end of the recce back to your vehicle. SUNDAY On the second day we will start our run from Dalness in Glen Etive and follow the race route through the Lairig Gartain to Glencoe, where we will join the West Highland Way. Our day will end with a run over the Devil's Staircase (highest point on the route) to Kinlochleven, where there will be transport waiting to return you to your vehicle. This shorter second day amounts to 19km and around 800m of ascent, leaving only the remaining (and straightforward) section of the West Highland Way from Kinlochleven to Glen Nevis, which we will not recce during the weekend. PLEASE NOTE: Our intention is to travel at a speed which is comfortable for the whole group, with time allowed for chatting with each other and the guide on the move. Your expectation should be a mix of running, jogging and walking rather than a fast pace. You’ll need to come prepared for a big day out with your own clothing, equipment and food. A full kit list and itinerary will be provided nearer the time, including details re transport and logistics. Accommodation and food is not included. You should book accomodation to suit your budget in the Glencoe/Ballachulish/Kinlochleven area. We recommend you stay in the area on both the Friday and Saturday night as a miniumum, to accommodate possible early start/late finish. Due to the remoteness of the area and irregular public transport, we advise bringing your vehicle with you to this event. Once you're here, lift-sharing will be facilitated over the weekend. The group leader has the discretion to change the route followed, should conditions or group fitness dictate. For more information on the race and to enter visit: Jacobite 100 — Salomon Skyline Scotland® www.girlsonhills.com/terms-and-conditions The event requires a minumum of three persons booked for it to run. In the event that we have to cancel the recce, you will be given advance notice and refunded in full. Intro to Scrambling | Glencoe

Jun 28–Jun 29, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED

Sports & Fitness
Walking
With its impressive steep, craggy mountains, Glencoe is one of the best places for scrambling in Scotland. It is home to bucket-list routes like the Aonach Eagach Ridge (grade 2) and Curved Ridge (grade 3). However, there is also plenty of easier scrambling in the glen and several superbly positioned grade 1 routes ideal for beginners to get to grips with! This developer course is suitable for hillwalkers and sky/mountain runners* who are looking to try scrambling for the first time or improve their confidence over graded terrain. Day 1 will focus on essential movement skills (scrambling up and down-climbing technique). This will be on grade 0-1 terrain without the use of a harness or rope. We will also cover how to planning your route and choose the appropriate scramble (including scrambling grades and what they mean). Day 2 will involve some tricker graded 1-2 scrambling (depending on the weather and group). We will cover route-finding, managing exposure and making sound judgements around weather and safety. On this day you may be required to wear a harness (at the discretion of your instructor). On both days you will be required to wear a helmet. Over the weekend, you will be instructed by Girls on Hills guide/s with the necessary Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor qualification (MCI) required to properly manage your safety on scrambling terrain in the mountains. The ratio will be no more than 1 to 6 (or 1 to 3 roped), with plenty of experience on-hand to help you where you need it. Selected routes will be in the Glencoe/Lochaber area. Participants should have a good level of hill fitness and a 'head for heights’ (i.e. not suffer from vertigo). If you’re not sure then please just drop us an email and ask! Girls on Hills is a 'no-frills' experience - we don't include food or accommodation, allowing you the flexibility to choose your own to suit travel logistics or budget. There is plenty of budget accommodation locally, including hostels/bunkhouses/pods. We can offer a shuttle service to/from local accommodation, and are committed to making your logistics work. We will email you the week before the event. This email will confirm meet location, as well as information on what to wear and bring with you. We will meet up to check kit and discuss final plans for the day over coffee before we start! We pride ourselves on being 'approachable and relatable' so please do get in touch with any concerns or queries you might have now or nearer to the event. We look forward to having some fun and showing you some fantastic scrambling in a breathtaking setting. * There will be no running on this event (walking only) although course content is applicable to both walkers and runners. Please note that you will be required to read and sign a disclaimer ahead of the weekend. You may also be required to use a rope/harness/helmet.
