Ngā Taonga Tūturu: Treasured Māori Portraits | Auckland Art Gallery
Sep 18, 2024–Nov 29, 2026 (UTC+12)
Auckland
Representations of tūpuna, ancestors, hold profound significance in te ao Māori, the Māori world. They embody customary cultural values including mana, tapu and mauri (prestige, sacredness and life force) and hold the ancestral ties of whakapapa. For centuries, representations of tūpuna were given form through whakairo (carving). The mediums of painting and photography were adopted from the mid-19th century for this purpose, with these new forms of portraiture congregating among or standing in place of whakairo in whare tūpuna (ancestral meeting houses) and their modern equivalents.
Ngā Taonga Tūturu: Treasured Māori Portraits brings together whakairo and oil paintings from the collection of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, offering insights into the significance of tūpuna representations within te ao Māori. ‘Ngā taonga’ means many treasures while ‘tūturu’ signifies something permanent, true and original. This exhibition considers the inherent cultural values embodied and expressed within and through these taonga from a te ao Māori view.
One of the most prolific portraitists of the late 19th and early 20th-century, Gottfried Lindauer’s paintings acknowledge the mana and self-determination of tūpuna through his respectful evocation of their likeness. They were widely commissioned by Māori and Pākehā (European New Zealander) alike. The portraits in this exhibition radiate outwards from Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, representing iwi (tribe) and hapū (subtribe) from throughout the motu (island). Recalling a whare tupuna, the gallery resonates with the mauri of these tūpuna.

The Robertson Gift: Paths through Modernity | Auckland Art Gallery
Feb 9, 2024–Feb 1, 2026 (UTC+12)
Auckland
The Robertson Gift: Paths through Modernity celebrates the monumental gift of significant artworks from the collection of New York philanthropists Julian (1932–2022) and Josie Robertson (1943–2010) to the Gallery.
The donation comprises 15 works by influential modern European artists, including Pierre Bonnard, Georges Braque, Paul Cezanne, Salvador Dalí, André Derain, Henri Fantin-Latour, Paul Gauguin, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian and Pablo Picasso.
Beginning with the suggestive nude bodies of the late 19th century and ending with a monumental colour-field painting from the 1960s, The Robertson Gift: Paths through Modernity takes visitors on a journey through the major art movements of the modern era, including Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, Surrealism, and post-war abstraction.
Featuring 49 paintings, prints, drawings and sculpture, the exhibition also includes visitor favourites from the permanent collection as well as loans and other important recent acquisitions, offering a broad survey of the best of late-19th- and early-to-mid 20th-century international art.
Mark Adams: A Survey | He Kohinga Whakaahua | Auckland Art Gallery
Mar 29–Aug 17, 2025 (UTC+12)
Auckland
Across a career spanning more than 50 years Mark Adams (born 1949) has photographed Aotearoa New Zealand – its land, peoples and its complex, multilayered histories. His practice documents sites of significance across the country, including places where Captain James Cook and his crew came ashore on their visits in 1769 and the 1770s, and locations where Te Tiriti o Waitangi was signed in 1840.
Over the decades, Adams has sustained a deep and ongoing engagement with subjects of interest. He has photographed whakairo Māori (Māori carving) both here and overseas and the work of celebrated tufuga tatatau, master tattoo artists, in Samoan communities in Tāmaki Makaurau for over 30 years. With Aotearoa as his tūrangawaewae (standing place), his images explore the migration of artistic and cultural practices across the globe and examine the role of museums and photography in this dynamic and ongoing cross-cultural exchange.
Jenny Holzer | STATEMENT – Truisms + | Auckland Art Gallery
Mar 27, 2024–Apr 26, 2026 (UTC+12)
Auckland
Jenny Holzer’s text works, called Truisms, were first executed as pithy and sometimes provocative slogans on the streets of New York in the late 1970s and early 1980s as stickers, t-shirts and posters, with the intention of taking art out of the museum and into public life. Holzer quickly converted these statements to the media of advertising and public communication with a series of pivotal LED signs, most famously in New York’s Times Square.
Holzer’s use of electronic technology is, she says, motivated by ‘needing to be where people look’. Hanging suspended from the ceiling of the Gallery’s South Atrium, in STATEMENT – Truisms +, 2015 iconic statements like ‘ABUSE OF POWER COMES AS NO SURPRISE’ and ‘ENSURE THAT YOUR LIFE STAYS IN FLUX’ cascade and flash in speech-like pulsating rhythms and rainbow spectrums of colour, seemingly with a life of their own.
Taimoana | Coastlines: Art in Aotearoa | Auckland Art Gallery
Apr 20, 2024–Jun 7, 2026 (UTC+12)
Auckland
Taimoana | Coastlines explores the art of Aotearoa New Zealand, locating it within Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa, the wider Pacific region. Taking the concept of the coast, or shoreline, as a starting point, the exhibition navigates a sea of ideas, offering multiple perspectives on New Zealand art through a selection of works from the collection of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki.
The coast is central to the way of life of many in Aotearoa New Zealand and it has been throughout our entire history. Integral to te ao Māori, the Māori world, the interconnectedness of land and sea is reflected in cultural narratives and practices. The coast is at times a source of sustenance and employment, at others a route for travel, a space of recreation, conflict, well-being or inspiration, but also, as the climate continues to change, at the frontline of danger. The coast is a threshold, an in-between zone, a perpetually shifting meeting point of land and sea that prompts us to examine our relationships with both.
In this exhibition, artists from the 18th century to today ride the oceans’ currents, traversing themes from the enormity of the Pacific to the vessels that have crossed its expanse and plied Aotearoa’s coasts, and exploring their personal responses to the shore as well as the legacies of colonial encounters and conflict.
Under the weather | Auckland Art Gallery
Nov 16, 2024–Jul 27, 2025 (UTC+12)
Auckland
Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson (born 1967) is globally renowned for his wide-ranging practice that explores the relevance of art through perception, complex geometries and its engagement with the environment around us.
The large elliptical screen of Under the weather, 2022 appears to flicker and change in relation to our movement, encouraging us to explore the space and discover new perspectives that are unique to each of us. This illusion is caused by a moiré pattern, an optical effect that occurs when two or more similar patterns are overlaid and clash, creating the appearance of rippling lines. As we move around, the elliptical shape of the screen also seems to change, appearing circular from certain vantage points. Looming large and seeming to radiate light and heat like an indoor sun, the artwork powerfully draws attention to the impact of weather on our lives.

May 2, 2025 (UTC+12)ENDED
Auckland
Join us for a talk with Canadian-British author, activist and journalist, Cory Doctorow. It promises to be an insightful hour-long talk delving into his popular works of science fiction, as well as his non-fiction, The Internet Con, which has the kind of synopsis that both terrifies and intrigues - it's a thoughtfully researched and equally scathing interrogation of how Big Tech platforms, operating under the guise of connection, trap people into having their personal life and relationships commodified. He is the author of many other books, most recently Picks & Shovels, A classic thriller setup: the little guys vs corporate skulduggery (The Daily Telegraph); Red Team Blues, a science fiction crime thriller; Chokepoint Capitalism, non-fiction about monopoly and creative labour markets; the Little Brother series for young adults; In Real Life, a graphic novel; and the picture book Poesy the Monster Slayer. We're so excited to welcome Cory into our store to talk about science-fiction, AI and the future of technology, it's is an area of conversation we're planning to have more of. This is a free event but numbers are limited, so please reserve your ticket and keep us posted if you're unable to make it.

GTGO "Ride It Keep It": FREE Bike Ride, Totara Park | Totara Park Mountain Bike Track
May 3, 2025 (UTC+12)ENDED
Auckland
Ride It Keep it: GTGO Group ride + keep the bike! Totara ParkWant to get into biking but don't have a bike? Thanks to the Auckland Council Climate Grant, Got To Get Out has developed a program called 'Ride It Keep It' to get locals riding on recycled bicycles! ** This invite is to people of all ages, as long as you can already ride a bike but dont have one and will use it. It will be an easy grade bike ride! ** The mission of this program is to reduce Auckland's climate impact, by making it easier for people to ride a bike instead of drive. We are further helping the environment by diverting waste out of landfill and scrap, giving hundreds of old bikes a 'second life' and keeping them in use. A team of mechanics and volunteers at the Got To Get Out Workshop (Glenfield Auckland) are hard at work fixing bikes, and we will bring a selection of refurbished bikes to these free rides. Who gets a bike? Anyone who does not already have a working bike, and will use the bike to get around ideally instead of driving! You can only get one free bike from our event series. You can come to any of our events in this series, you can only get one free one. About the ride: Please note this will be an easy grade bike ride in Auckland. We will ride in Totara Park which will take about 2 hours in total. Details: - Meet at 9:45am (come earlier if you need a bike) as we will ride at 10 sharp - Meet Totara Park Carpark (Redoubt Rd) / (look for the Got To Get Out trailer) - Bike fitting starts once all riders are there, - Bike ride starts when everyone is on a bike, we will do a quick skills session - There may be an opportunity to 'swap bikes' and try a few, though the decision of 'who gets which bike' is made by Got To Get Out staff - Ride ends 1pm thereabouts once we've done the easy trails. QUESTIONS: Do I need to know how to ride? YES! Though it's OK if it's been a while. This activity is not a formal 'lesson', so you need to know how to ride - even if it's been a while since you were last on a bike. There will not be time to teach you how to ride if you have never ridden before. A basic skills session will happen at the start of the ride, but the main purpose of this is to show you how the free bike/s work, as opposed to teaching how to ride. Can you come with your own bike? Absolutely! If you own a bike already, come along and ride too! There are 10 tickets for BYO bikes, and 10 tickets for those who need one. What bike can you keep? You are welcome to 'try out' a few different bikes, but ultimately it will come down to who fits which bike. It would help us if you tell us your size (height) before you come along. We will allocate bikes based on size and intended usage etc, and the decision of who gets which bike is the decision of Got To Get Out staff. We make no promise that your exact size bike will be here but will do a our best to fit each person to a bike. Donate a bike? If you wish to donate a bike, this is a great time to pop along and give us a bike! Just message us prior so we know if the bike is suitable for our needs. Helmets: We will provide helmets for the group ride, but not to keep. We are not funded to provide helmets to keep sorry, so you need to sort out a helmet yourself. It's best you bring a helmet. If you get a bike? If you get a free bike, you need to take it away ON THE DAY. So think about how you will transport it, get it home, lock it up. Also, expect to have to do a survey about your likely use of the bike. If you wish to rehome the bike within one year, it's expected you offer it back to Got To Get Out to gift to someone else. Any questions, please email robert@gottogetout.com You've #gottogetout riding! Thank you Auckland Council Climate Grant.
