DUBLIN HANDELFEST 2025 | Handel 'Alexander's Feast' (1742 Dublin Version) | Hibernia Conference Hall, Dublin Castle
Aug 15, 2025 (UTC+0)
Dublin
HANDEL 'ALEXANDER'S FEAST' (1742 Dublin Version) Dramatic, evocative and heroic, Handel's 'Alexander's Feast' is a masterful blend of dramatic storytelling and vivid musical imagery. Originally composed by Handel in London in 1736, the work is a musical ode based on John Dryden's poem of the same name, recounting an episode from the life of Alexander the Great. Set during a grand feast in the city of Persepolis, Alexander and his lover, Thais, are entertained by the bard Timotheus. Through his music, Timotheus evokes a range of emotions in Alexander, from joy and love to sorrow and anger. Ultimately, the bard's stirring melodies inspire Alexander to burn the Persian capital as an act of vengeance for Greece. While Alexander's Feast itself was not premiered in Dublin, it was performed there during Handel's visit to the city—the same year he debuted his iconic 'Messiah'. The performance was met with great acclaim, reflecting the city's growing appreciation for Handel's works. This further cemented Handel's connection to Dublin, a city that embraced his music and sent him back to London in better health and fortune. Join the Irish Baroque Orchestra, Peter Whelan and outstanding soloists to hear a reconstruction of the 1742 Dublin version, from a new edition prepared for the IBO. DUBLIN HANDELFEST 2025 Trad Meets Baroque: Inside Pádraig Ó Néill's Library | Hibernia Conference Hall, Dublin Castle
Aug 16, 2025 (UTC+0)
Dublin
TRAD MEETS BAROQUE: Inside Pádraig Ó Néill's Library Irish tunes neatly penned on the back of printed music published in Dublin, Irish language songs and poetry written next to books in Latin, Ancient Greek, English and French... Pádraig Ó Néill’s library was a place of great knowledge and variety, a distinct point where Irish language met 18th century Europe. Now in the National Library, five books with traditional dance tunes and songs in Pádraig’s hand form the basis of this concert on historical instruments, alongside a taste of music from Dublin publishers on which these tunes were notated. Pádraig’s manuscripts are the earliest known notations of traditional music from an Irish Gaelic person. Prior to this we have prints from Dublin publishers, often with unclear sources. He lived from 1765-1832 in Owning, Co. Kilkenny, and was a miller and a farmer, but also piper and fiddle player who sang and wrote Irish poetry. Join us for an exploration into the sounds of the beginning of the Irish music tradition as we know it today! Please note that refunds are not possible within 7 days of the event

DUBLIN HANDELFEST 2025 | Young Artists Showcase: The 1742 Dublin Connection | Hibernia Conference Hall, Dublin Castle
Aug 17, 2025 (UTC+0)
Dublin
YOUNG ARTISTS SHOWCASE: The 1742 Dublin Connection The IBO’s exceptional Apprentices present a musical connection stretching back across the centuries to 1742. When Handel arrived in Dublin he found a city with a thriving musical scene. The musicians of the Irish State Musick at Dublin Castle were a renowned ensemble comprising some of the finest musicians of the day, and they provided musicians for Handel during his visit. Their leader, Matthew Dubourg, had a close relatinoship with Handel and led the orchestra at the premiere of ‘Messiah’ leading Handel to comment as for the Instruments they are really excellent, Mr. Dubourgh being at the Head of them, and the Musick sounds delightfully in this charming Room . Dubourg had popularised the Italian Baroque style, and had studied with Francesco Geminiani (another Dublin resident) earlier in his career. ‘The 1742 Dublin Connection’ harks back to music of this time, with works by Vivaldi and Geminiani to enjoy among others. Join us for some Italian sunshine, as part of Dublin HandelFest. The IBO Apprentices in 2025 are generously supported by Mike Beary and Gary Gates.
