Dive into a world where the past takes a different turn, blending imagination with historical events. Let's unravel the twists and turns together! Get ready to share your thoughts and insights face to face with fellow book lovers. Ticket includes a copy of Cahokia Jazz and $10 towards your first beverage at Ochos Cocktail and Wine Bar. Seating is limited to 12 participants, registration is required for each person. Haven’t finished the book? Come anyway, but we cannot promise no spoilers. Must be 21 or older to attend. If you have already purchased the book from Rediscovered Books, please email a copy of your receipt to rdbooksevents@gmail.com and we will issue you a gift card equal to the cost of the book after you have registered. About the Book: Like his earlier novel Golden Hill , Francis Spufford's Cahokia Jazz inhabits a different version of America, now through the lens of a subtly altered 1920s--a fully imagined world filled with fog, cigarette smoke, dubious motives, danger, and dark deeds. In the main character of hard-boiled detective Joe Barrow, we have a hero of truly epic proportions, a troubled soul to fall in love with as you are swept along by a propulsive and brilliantly twisty plot. One snowy night at the end of winter, Barrow and his partner find a body on the roof of a skyscraper. Down below, streetcar bells ring, factory whistles blow, Americans drink in speakeasies and dance to the tempo of modern times. But this is Cahokia, the ancient indigenous city beside the Mississippi living on as a teeming industrial metropolis containing people of every race and creed. Among them, peace holds. Just about. Yet that corpse on the roof will spark a week of drama in which this altered world will spill its secrets and be brought, against a soundtrack of jazz clarinets and wailing streetcars, either to destruction or rebirth. Wild Card Book Club - The Butchering Art by Lindsey Fitzharris | Ochos Cocktail and Wine Bar

May 29, 2025 (UTC-7)
Boise
Cultural Experiences
Welcome to the Wild Card Book Club! Come join us for a lively discussion about The Butchering Art: Joseph Lister's Quest to Transform the Grisly World of Victorian Medicine by Lindsey Fitzharris. Let's delve into the intriguing world of Victorian surgery as we explore this fascinating book together. Get ready to share your thoughts, insights, and maybe even some "eew" moments as we dissect (pun intended) this historical non-fiction gem. Mark your calendars and bring your enthusiasm for our in-person gathering. Let's dissect this book over some coffee and good company. See you there! Ticket includes a copy of The Butchering Art and $10 towards your first cocktail at Ochos Cocktail and Wine Bar. Come to meet new people and have a great conversation! Discussion led by Rediscovered Books Booksellers, Amy and Diane. Enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine. About the Book: In The Butchering Art , the historian Lindsey Fitzharris reveals the shocking world of nineteenth-century surgery and shows how it was transformed by advances made in germ theory and antiseptics between 1860 and 1875. She conjures up early operating theaters--no place for the squeamish--and surgeons, who, working before anesthesia, were lauded for their speed and brute strength. These pioneers knew that the aftermath of surgery was often more dangerous than patients' afflictions, and they were baffled by the persistent infections that kept mortality rates stubbornly high. At a time when surgery couldn't have been more hazardous, an unlikely figure stepped forward: a young, melancholy Quaker surgeon named Joseph Lister, who would solve the riddle and change the course of history. Fitzharris dramatically reconstructs Lister's career path to his audacious claim that germs were the source of all infection and could be countered by a sterilizing agent applied to wounds. She introduces us to Lister's contemporaries--some of them brilliant, some outright criminal--and leads us through the grimy schools and squalid hospitals where they learned their art, the dead houses where they studied, and the cemeteries they ransacked for cadavers. Eerie and illuminating, The Butchering Art celebrates the triumph of a visionary surgeon whose quest to unite science and medicine delivered us into the modern world. Conferences
Note: This *FREE* event is to be attended in person ( Promo code : BRAVER). You will not need physical or virtual tickets in order to attend this event. In this polarized time, we lack basic understanding of why people on the other political side hold their beliefs. We don’t see them as they see themselves–their core values and central concerns–but instead as we choose to see them. We are tempted to regard our own side as principled and the other side as self-interested. When we try to communicate across this gap, we often lack the skills for listening carefully, looking for common ground, and sharing our perspectives in ways that connect rather than create more misunderstanding. We can learn to disagree better in polarized times, which means accurately seeing where we differ and where we share common ground. Goals More understanding of the values and concerns of people who differ from you politically Better skills for listening in a way so that the other person feels heard Better skills for sharing viewpoints in a way the other person might hear -- even if they disagree * Tickets are Free, Donations Help Use promo code BRAVER during registration to get a free ticket.
