Arts Comedy
You become Agatha Christie in this improvised comedy as an original murder mystery play is created based entirely on audience suggestions. So take up your magnifying glasses and don your deerstalkers for a never-seen-before (and never-to-be-seen-again) evening of murder, mayhem and making it up on the spot. Lady Violet slain with a whisk at a bake-off? Mr Gold crushed by a mannequin during New York fashion week? You decide, but will you guess whodunnit? ‘Original, professional and very, very funny’ **** (EdFringeReview.com). ‘Absolutely fantastic… incredibly clever… laugh-out-loud funny… a truly entertaining and hilarious take on the murder mystery and absolutely not one to miss’ ***** (VoiceMag.uk). ‘Hilarious… the show is a riot’ (Scottish Daily Mail). How Speed Dating Works in Plymouth When you arrive at the Plymouth venue you will be greeted by our friendly professional hosts. Once everyone has arrived and registered we will briefly explain the format of the evening. The ladies will then be asked to make their way to their allocated table. Once the ladies are seated the gentlemen will be asked to proceed to their first date. You will have 4 minutes to chat to each date, once the 4 minutes is over we will ring a bell to indicate the time is up and for the gentlemen to move to their next date. Four minutes is long enough to see if you click with the person you are talking to and whether you would like to see them again and also short enough if you don't. At the end of each date you have a brief few moments to make some notes on the person you have just dated. This is something to help jog your memory for the post event matching process the next day. Half way through the event you will have an interval break so you can nip to the toilet or top up your drink. Once all the dates are over you have the opportunity to stay on at the venue to mingle freely with others. Please remember to take your dating card home with you to assist you in entering in your ticks and potential matches. Post Event No later than 11am the following morning our matching system will be unlocked for you to enter your ticks from the previous evening. You have all day to tick as many people as you like from the night before. We guarantee you will find someone you will want to see again, otherwise we will give you your next Speed Dating event for free! Cultural Experiences
The image of a female witch, with broom and black cat serving the devil, is ingrained in pop culture. But where did this stereotype come from? The concept of witchcraft emerged slowly over the course of several centuries as a result of theological, intellectual, and cultural changes in ideas about demons and heresy.  Magical practices were varied - including love magic, healing, and various forms of prognostication. And it certainly wasn’t always associated with women.  In fact, more ‘sinister’ magic like necromancy - which relied heavily on the power of demons - was mostly done by men. This type of magic involved a lot of education that simply wasn’t accessible to women at the time. So how come this image of evil women practising magic - witches - came about? This talk will use feminist approaches to the past to explore medieval changes in ideas about magic, gender, and heresy in order to better understand the emergence of witchcraft at the end of the middle ages. We will also look at witchcraft in relation to female sexuality and fears about women’s access to ritual power throughout history.   Doors open at 6:45pm, talk starts at 7.30pm - come down early to grab a good seat! Follow us on IG @seedtalks Dr Jennifer Farrell is a lecturer in medieval history at the University of Exeter. With interests in both gender and the medieval supernatural, her research and teaching focuses on cultural developments and their relationship to socio-political changes in Western Europe during the high and late middle ages (c. 1000- c. 1500). She has published on subjects including medieval prophecy; fairies in medieval history and romance; the relationship between literary representations of fairies, the supernatural, and gender; and is currently working on a book focused on Geoffrey of Monmouth and the origins of the Arthurian legends. Her teaching has included undergraduate and postgraduate courses looking at medieval gender and sexuality, universities and learning in the middle ages, magic in the middle ages, sexualities across time and space, and the legends of King Arthur.  Testimonials from our guests ⭐ Super Interesting talks! Fun and Informative - Ally S. ⭐ Expertly run, talks are always super informative and a lot of fun! Couldn’t recommend these enough! 5 star. - Owen S ⭐ Very interesting topics, and very well organised. Would 100% recommend - Jordo S Information Source: Seed Talks | eventbrite
