Vanishing Landscapes: The Story of Plants and How We Lost Them In the past, we were deeply bound to all things green and growing. We once knew the landscape and the plants around us as well as we knew ourselves. But today our relationship with plants and nature has grown distant. Vanishing Landscapes tells the story of how plants disappeared from our daily lives one by one. The history of these plants shows us how we became modern, but it also shows a path to recover some of what we have lost. In Vanishing Landscapes, Bonnie Lander Johnson goes in search of the old life and the people who are still connected to the land. She meets farmers in Ireland, wine makers in Yorkshire and cloth dyers in the Highlands. She cuts reeds in the watery Norfolk fens and camps overnight in a West Country orchard to gaze up at an unchanging sky. Vanishing Landscapes brings to life a world we never knew but still long for, and reminds us that it's not too late to find a way back. Bonnie is a Fellow and Associate Professor at Downing College, Cambridge, teaching early modern literature and history. She writes both non-fiction and fiction; her work has appeared in Hinterland, The Belfast Review, Howl and Dappled Things, and her fiction has been shortlisted for The Royal Society of Literature's V. S. Pritchett Prize and The Brick Lane Bookshop Short Story Prize. Welcome to the 3v3 Wheelchair Basketball Tournament where you can experience the game of basketball from a WHEELCHAIR! For the 4th time, the United Spinal Metro DC Chapter, in partnership with MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital, is hosting their blockbuster wheelchair basketball fundraiser and bringing this very unique experience back! This event is a 3v3 wheelchair basketball tournament that will be taking place at Trinity Washington University's Center for Women and Girls in Sports (aka Trinity Center) on Sunday, April 27th. This will be a 20 team maximum tournament with an entry fee of $250 per team. Each team will consist of a minimum of 3 players and a maximum of 5. Before the start of the tournament there will be an hour when the players will be taught the fundamentals and rules of wheelchair basketball from MedStar's Wheelchair Basketball Team - The NRH Punishers! Not interested in competing in the tournament? No problem! We encourage spectators to stop by and enjoy the event. Come by to support and learn more about the positive impact of adaptive sports! Event Schedule: 9-10 AM - Team Registration 10-11 AM - Wheelchair Basketball Clinic 11-2 PM- 20 Team Tournament 2-3 PM - Awards The goal of this fundraiser is to bring inclusiveness by having able-bodied individuals compete in sports wheelchairs; this will provide an eye-opening experience, highlighting just some of the challenges that their disabled counterparts face day-to-day. All proceeds from the tournament will go to the local United Spinal Metro DC Chapter and then will be reinvested in the disability community for individuals with spinal cord injuries and diseases (SCI/D) providing them with the necessary services and mobility equipment so that they may also lead successful and independent lives.
