Ansel Adams: New Mexico | Center for Contemporary Arts Santa Fe
Apr 23, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Pecos
New Mexico played a key role in the photography of Ansel Adams, whose first portfolio book was 1930’s Taos Pueblo. In many subsequent visits he produced influential images of our landscape, churches, architecture, and people. This presentation, using many examples of his work, will explore how New Mexico shaped his aesthetic practice and how his darkroom techniques evolved over time. We’ll also consider his work within the larger context of his beliefs about the spiritual dimensions of photography and his life-long activism on behalf of conservation and the preservation of the natural universe. PresenterGregory Jay is Professor Emeritus at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His previous Renesan courses included Holocaust Literature, the Harlem Renaissance, and the work of Georgia O’Keeffe in New Mexico.

James Joyce's "Dubliners" | 1200 Old Pecos Trail
Mar 17, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Pecos
Joyce’s Dubliners, his most accessible work of fiction, is considered by many to be one of the most fully-realized short story cycles in English. Proceeding through the collection, we will discuss Joyce’s presentation of the legacy of Irish history and his exploration of Irish culture, including the influence of Catholicism, the impact of British colonialism, and the constructions of gender roles during the time period. Finally, we will consider Joyce’s use of narrative technique, allusion, and figurative language and the ways he employs leitmotif and other devices to link the stories in the cycle. This is a four-session discussion-style class that meets at Renesan, 1200 Old Pecos Trail, on March 17, 24, and 31, and on April 7. Ed Walkiewicz was educated at Yale, Columbia, and the University of New Mexico. He was the holder of an endowed professorship at Oklahoma State, and he has authored or co-authored two books, and numerous chapters, articles, notes, and reviews on modern and contemporary American and Irish literature. He also has presented scholarly papers on Joyce’s fiction at international conferences and taught it in undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education courses.

Mikado Madness | Center for Contemporary Arts Santa Fe
Mar 12, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Pecos
Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado wasn’t just a hit operetta, it was a cultural phenomenon and a marketing juggernaut. You could buy Mikado-themed corsets, stoves, condoms, toothpaste, and tomatoes, and it was the basis for many adaptations, from dueling jazz-based versions — The Hot Mikado and The Swing Mikado — that both ran on Broadway in 1939 to the Swinging 60’s Cool Mikado to 2010’s The Mikado Project. There were even early television versions starring Groucho Marx and Tennessee Ernie Ford. We’ll explore this rich heritage through many video excerpts and plentiful period imagery. PRESENTER Mark Tiarks studied opera and theater in London as a Watson Foundation fellow, then served as artistic administrator of Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, general director of Chicago Opera Theater, and director of strategic planning and marketing at Santa Fe Opera. He now writes on music, opera, film, and popular culture for The Santa Fe New Mexican.
