Arts Literary Arts
The stories of the four teenage children of prominent abolitionists before and during the Civil War combine to form a surprisingly familiar tapestry of struggle, disappointment, and ultimately hope. Flowers in the Gutter author Kristina R. Gaddy tells the story of America’s tumultuous years leading up to the Civil War and of the war itself from the viewpoints of four children of famous abolitionists, including those of Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison. Gaddy crafts a surprisingly contemporary braided coming-of-age narrative, supported by meticulous research and featuring dozens of primary documents. Each of these four young people—two white, two Black—was strongly committed to the anti-slavery cause but felt just as keenly a need to make their own names, away from the often over-protective or disapproving shadows of the famous adults in their lives. This is a true story of how a torch of resistance is passed and how a new generation makes its mark. About the Author: K. R. Gaddy is a freelance writer and historian. Her previous work includes Flowers in the Gutter, which Kirkus praised as “an eye-opening account of tenacity that brings the efforts of young anti-Nazi activists vividly to life” in a starred review, and Well of Souls, which the Economist called “beguiling…Gaddy successfully blends archival skills with imagination.” She received a Robert W. Deutsch Foundation Rubys Artist Grant for her writing and research. She lives in Baltimore. About the Program: Doors will open to registered attendees at 12pm.All registered in person attendees will receive a free copy of the book while supplies last.Bike parking and metered street parking are available. Arts Comedy
Welcome to Baltimore Holy S#!T - the greatest comedy tour in the greatest city in America. Join us for a hilarious voyage around the inner harbor where we'll explore Baltimore's history, landmarks, most ridiculous people, and get to know each other through the lens of two very weird, very funny Highwire Improv hosts. You'll get real history, realer laughs, and the realest look at Baltimore - not some grubby pamphlet with the same old ten facts covered in Old Bay. What to Bring: Yourself, in a positive, community loving moodFriends, family and/or foesSome water / soft drinksA reasonable amount of alcoholic drinks (this tour is BYOB) - we're only on the water for an hour, so emphasis on the word reasonable. Your hosts are the only ones who should be screaming, cursing, and otherwise acting foolish (they are professionals).Ground (and Water) Rules: Be safe: you'll get a briefing upon boarding the boat; follow all safety rules and regulations and any instructions from your Baltimore Water Taxi crew.Be respectful: we're all responsible for making sure everyone has a good experience; no heckling, bothering other guests, or otherwise rude or disrespectful behavior. There's no brig on this ship but we'll figure something out!Be on time: the boat will not wait for you! Plan to arrive no later than 7pm so we can go over things with everyone and get on the ship promptly. This is Fells Point and parking can be busy - plan ahead; we'll be there early in case you are too!No smoking of any kind is allowed on the pier or on the boat!About your Hosts: Katie Overbey (she/her)began her improv journey in 2018 under the guise of professional development as part of a class in grad school. She fell in love with the way improv could turn a group of science nerds into funny, cohesive performers and she's been hooked ever since. Katie has performed with various groups, including Babeprov in Baltimore and Game Knights at The Armory in NYC. She considers Highwire Improv her home base and when she's not doing improv, she's working as a food ingredient regulator, knitting, or snuggling her pets. Misty Letts (she/they) stepped into the improv pool 6 years ago and has not looked back. She got her footing at Baltimore Improv Group through curriculum and workshops from various BIG instructors of the form. Digging into opportunities to learn from so much talent including Don Fanelli (UCB), Kate Zelensky (UCB), and Travis Charles Ploeger (iMusical- WIT). She has also enjoyed playing with Maryland Improv Collective and can presently be found camped out on Highwire’s front stoop. Misty she’s and is also a they/them and can be found on two wheels tooling about town, so drive carefully! “Improv helps the world laugh, and listen” -Misty Barry Wright (he/him) is your dockside host and operations manager. Barry is an improviser, teacher, and technology professional. He is a co-founder of Highwire Improv and currently serves as President of the Board. He has trained in improv since 2017, including at Baltimore Improv Group, Hoopla Impro, and numerous online workshops. He performs with groups including Improv Jeoparty, Topiary, Important Screws, Whatever This Is, and Dreamweaver. Barry lives with his wife Kristen and their three cats and is always happy to chat about improv or start a Google Doc. About Highwire Improv: Highwire Improv is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization based in Baltimore, Maryland. Our mission is to steward a community of artists committed to growth, collaboration, joy, and justice — in Baltimore and around the world — through improvisational theater. Pride is a time for celebration, yes! — yet also a time for reflection and remembrance. To mark the beginning of Pride month in Baltimore, The Emmanuel Choir offers a reprise performance of the profoundly moving passion oratorio Considering Matthew Shepard by Craig Hella Johnson. First presented at Emmanuel to great effect in 2022, this powerful work tells the story of gay Wyoming college student Matthew Shepard’s brutal 1998 beating and murder — and of the hope that transcends such tragedy, through music of varying styles: jazz, blues, country, and gospel included. Presented in collaboration with the Maryland Pride Center and Baltimore Pride, this program promises a deeply enriching experience for Baltimore’s LGBTQIA+ community and its many friends and allies. Please join us as we close Music at Emmanuel’s 2024–2025 season! The Emmanuel ChoirChamber orchestraSoloists from within the choirChristian Lane, directorAbout TicketsA ticket is required of all attendees, and may be obtained prior to the concert or at the door beginning 30 minutes prior to the performance. Emmanuel Church is committed to ensuring all persons have access to its space and its musical offerings, regardless of income and ability to pay. Therefore, for most concerts, a limited number of Free Rush Tickets will be made available, online only, beginning 24 hours in advance of a concert's start time. Single tickets are transferable, but not refundable. If your plans change and you can no longer attend a performance, we encourage you to transfer your tickets to a friend. To do so, open your ticket in Eventbrite and edit the ticket's name and email address. Subscription tickets may be exchanged for a different concert on the same series. Simply write to tickets@emmanueldowntown.org to request a ticket exchange. We thank Emmanuel's Friends of Music for their ongoing and significant support of programming at Emmanuel. If you are intersted in becoming a Friend of Music, please click here. Music at Emmanuel is grateful to the Maryland State Arts Council and the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund, creator of the Baker Artist Portfolios, www.BakerArtist.org, for their support of the 2024–2025 season. About the choirThe Emmanuel Choir is Maryland's premier professional liturgical choral ensemble. A 16-voice fully-professional mixed-voice ensemble, its 12-member core is augmented by four Choral Scholars, each a local young artist. Rooted in the great and expansive choral traditions of the Anglican (Episcopal) Church, the Emmanuel Choir’s repertoire spans the centuries — from Italian Renaissance to English Romantic; from plainsong to the 21st century — and includes regular world-premiere performances of new music composed for the church of today and tomorrow. The choir is directed by Christian Lane. Parking and TransportationEmmanuel Church is located at 811 Cathedral Street in Baltimore, on the corner of Cathedral & W. Read Streets in the Mt. Vernon neighborhood. Ample street parking, both free and metered, is available in historic Mt. Vernon. After 6:00 p.m. on weekdays, and all day on Sundays, many meters do not require payment and most residential restrictions are lifted. Please be sure to consult signage carefully. However, we strongly encourage our patrons to avoid the stress of searching for street parking, and to make a parking plan before arriving into our residential neighborhood. About the venueEmmanuel Episcopal Church is located in the heart of Baltimore's historic Mt. Vernon neighborhood. Its tremendous stone tower at the corner of Cathedral and W. All are welcome though this workshop is designed for: • Community leaders who are currently members of – or plan to start – a small nonprofit organization. • Any organization seeking legal assistance through Community Law Center with an issue related to organizational formation, as attendance at the workshop is required before the organization will be assigned an attorney through Community Law Center. In times like these, it is important to make sure your organization has a solid foundation. Take the time now to build your internal capacity: create or review your bylaws; reflect on your conflicts of interest policy; consider how you are making decisions remotely; make sure you are up-to-date with state and federal filings; and think about whether it is the right time to apply for 501(c)(3) status. Whether your organization is new or it has existed for a while, this course contains all the information you need to know to keep it legally compliant. Cost to attend the workshop The cost for one person to attend the workshop is $75. Additional attendees from the same organization may sign up for a discounted rate! The cost for two (2) participants from the same organization is $100. Accessing the workshop The workshop will be in-person at Community Law Center in the Hampden neighborhood of Baltimore City, Maryland. About the Presenter Amy Yontef-McGrath is Community Law Center’s Pro Bono Program Coordinator. She most recently joined Community Law Center in September 2022 for this role, but had previously worked at CLC as a Staff Attorney as well, providing legal services and developing strategies with Baltimore neighborhood leaders to improve their communities. She has also founded a volunteer platform, co-founded a service business, and is actively involved with non-profit organizations addressing a variety of community needs. She is a graduate of Widener University Delaware Law School and a current member of the Maryland Bar. Cancellations and Refunds Refunds will be accepted up to 48 hours before the workshop. If you, or your designee, do not attend the workshop you signed up for, the fee is non-refundable. Special Note – for attorneys who wish to provide free legal services to nonprofits: Attorneys interested in representing nonprofits in obtaining 501(c)(3) status should consider joining Community Law Center’s Pro Bono Program by registering as a volunteer attorney. For more information about our Pro Bono Program, please click here. Photo Waiver Attendees of Community Law Center events grant permission to appear in photographs used in publications, including printed materials, and electronic formats including website entries, without payment or any other consideration.
