Arts Literary Arts
Please join Morgan State's Program for the Study of the Middle East & North Africa and the Chloe Center for the Critical Study of Racism, Immigration, and Colonialism for this landmark event. The award-winning, bestselling author and Baltimore native Ta-Nehisi Coates will speak with Sara Rahnama (Morgan State, History) and Nathan Connolly (Johns Hopkins, History) to address the urgent need to untangle ourselves from the destructive myths that shape our world. Coates will address how traveling to Senegal, South Carolina, and occupied Palestine caused him to rethink how he had accepted certain myths about politics, history, and social change. This event has been rescheduled from when it was originally set to take place on February 11 but was cancelled because of inclement weather. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the event will begin at 7 p.m. Books will be available for purchase. For students in the Hopkins community who need transportation, please note your campus location when checking out. Free buses will be available. Please reserve a seat by April 24. This event is free and open to all to be accessible to as many students and community members as possible. We ask attendees who are able to consider a suggested donation of $20. Your support will enable our program to fund study abroad travel for Morgan students who lack the financial resources to otherwise do so. Study abroad is a critical tool for Morgan students to experience new cultures and expand their understanding of the world. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps make that possible. About The Message : Ta-Nehisi Coates originally set out to write a book about writing, in the tradition of Orwell's classic "Politics and the English Language," but found himself grappling with deeper questions about how our stories—our reporting and imaginative narratives and mythmaking—expose and distort our realities. In the first of the book's three intertwining essays, Coates, on his first trip to Africa, finds himself in two places at once: in Dakar, a modern city in Senegal, and in a mythic kingdom in his mind. Then he takes readers along with him to Columbia, South Carolina, where he reports on his own book's banning, but also explores the larger backlash to the nation's recent reckoning with history and the deeply rooted American mythology so visible in that city—a capital of the Confederacy with statues of segregationists looming over its public squares. Finally, in the book's longest section, Coates travels to Palestine, where he sees with devastating clarity how easily we are misled by nationalist narratives, and the tragedy that lies in the clash between the stories we tell and the reality of life on the ground. Written at a dramatic moment in American and global life, this work from one of the country's most important writers is about the urgent need to untangle ourselves from the destructive myths that shape our world—and our own souls—and embrace the liberating power of even the most difficult truths. Through their stylistic choices, humor, subject matter, and more, their artworks visually deviate from all stereotyped cliches within traditional cultural art settings. In addition, this year's Asia North exhibition exceeds the scope of our previous Asia North exhibitions by taking place in more locations in unexpected ways from Motor House to spaces throughout North Avenue Market. Karol Lagodzki's debut novel Controlled Conversations is both a page-turner and a work that raises high-stakes moral quandry. Set in1982 Soviet-controlled Poland-a time and place of suspicion and mistrust, the novel follows Emilia, who must decide if she's willing to risk prison or worse for self-respect and for her unexpected love. As the only daughter of a local Communist Party apparatchik, Emilia has enjoyed a sheltered life, but with the advent of martial law, her mother's influence can no longer shield her. She faces choices she never expected to make when she discovers her best friend's and lover's involvement with the resistance. With new allies and enemies in town, the time to choose a side is now. We look forward to hosting the author for an evening of conversation and book signing! Purchase Controlled Conversations here! Karol Lagodzki left Poland at twenty. His non-writing careers have ranged from fixing stucco while dangling from roofs in Paris to sorting through human cadaver heads in Jacksonville. Bestselling and award-winning author Kate Messner takes readers on a heart-filling journey as a boy finds his path to healing. One summer. 46 mountain peaks. A second chance to make things right. Finn Connelly is nothing like his dad, a star athlete and firefighter hero who always ran toward danger until he died two years ago. Finn is about to fail seventh grade and has never made headlines . . . until now. Caught on camera vandalizing a cemetery, he's in big trouble for knocking down some dead old lady's headstone. Turns out that grave belongs to a legendary local mountain climber, and her daughter makes Finn an unusual offer: she'll drop all the charges if he agrees to climb all forty-six Adirondack High Peaks in a single summer. And there's just one more thing--he has to bring along the dead woman's dog. In a wild three months of misadventures, mountain mud, and unexpected mentors, Finn begins to find his way on the trails. At the top of each peak, he can see for miles and slowly begins to understand more about himself and his dad. But the mountains don't care about any of that, and as the clock ticks down to September, they have more surprises in store. Finn's final summit challenge may be more than even a hero can face. Join The Ivy for this evening event with Elana and Gary Vikan, where you can learn more about the riveting memoir Finding Home: How the Holocaust Shaped My Family, Elana's first book as primary author. A wonderful memoir that many readers will connect and learn from, it traces the story of Elana's family and their intergenerational migrations, from Vilna, the Jerusalem of the North, to France, to the US, and back to France and Vilnius. With victims, triumphs, and many stories that feel strikingly contemporary, this is a book that prompts generative conversation. We are fortunate that acclaimed author and Ivy bookseller Elisabeth Dahl will join Elana and Gary in conversation. Purchase Finding Home here! Elana Klausner Vikan was born in Manhattan, raised in Cranston, Rhode Island, and educated at Bryn Mawr College, with a double major in French and Russian. She spent the summer of 1965 in a Russian language immersion program and trip to the Soviet Union under the National Defense Education Act, after which she studied in Paris for her junior year. At Princeton University, in the Department of Comparative Literature, she was awarded the Sibley Prize to support a research year in Paris. Elana was a lifelong teacher of French, Russian, and the history of art, working at Princeton University, Georgetown Day School, and, for 28 years, Roland Park Country School in Baltimore. Elana now spends time with her family and three grandsons, plays classical music on the piano, enjoys her Boston Terriers, and continues to travel extensively throughout Europe, though most often to her beloved France, with her husband Gary. She collaborated with Gary on the book Postcards from Behind the Iron Curtain, about their year in Romania in 1974-1975. Gary Vikan was director of the Walters Art Museum from 1994 to 2013; from 1985 to 1994 he was the museum’s chief curator. Before coming to Baltimore, Gary was senior associate at Harvard’s Center for Byzantine Studies at Dumbarton Oaks. A native of Minnesota, he received his B.A. from Carleton College and his Ph.D. in the history of art from Princeton University. Gary was appointed by President Clinton to his Cultural Property Advisory Committee, and has debated twice on the topic of antiquites repatriation at the Oxford Union. He was knighted as a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 2004. In retirement, he lectures, teaches, and writes. His recent books include Sacred and Stolen: Confessions of a Museum Director (2016); The Holy Shroud: A Brilliant Hoax in the Time of the Black Death (2020); My Father Took Pictures: Growing Up in Smalltown Minnesota (2021); and, with Elana, Postcards from Behind the Iron Curtain (2023). Elisabeth Dahl writes for children and adults from her home in Baltimore, Maryland. Genie Wishes (ABRAMS, 2013), a middle-grade novel with line drawings, is her first book. Her short stories, essays, and poems for adults have appeared in various outlets, including NPR.org, The Rumpus, The Johns Hopkins Magazine, Necessary Fiction, and Post Road. Elisabeth holds degrees in literature and writing from Johns Hopkins and Georgetown universities. Information Source: The Ivy Bookshop | eventbrite
