Cultural Experiences
Join like-minded people with an interest in recording wildlife observations for a day identifying and recording invertebrates in an informal environment. Naturalists of all levels (from beginner to expert) will be able to share their experiences with peers and help one another improve their knowledge and build confidence in biological recording. What will the day involve? Practical experience using a variety of methods to collect and record invertebrates. Practical experience in collecting and preserving specimens. A chance to meet fellow like-minded people from a range of different disciplines. What do I need to know in advance? This event is aimed at adults only. Attendance is free, but booking is essential as spaces are limited. Recorders of all abilities are welcome. Identification will take place in the field whenever possible, but some specimens may need to be collected to be observed in more detail and identified at a later date. We'll be outside for the whole day so please bring suitable clothing for the weather, as well as your lunch and any snacks you will require with you on the day. Recording London's Wildlife All records collected will be added to the LNHS iRecord activity in order to share our findings with the site managers, Greenspace Information for Greater London (GiGL), London Natural History Society (LNHS) and relevant national recording schemes and societies. Invertebrate Specialist: Keiron Derek Brown Keiron has been involved with a range of invertebrate projects across the UK, including designing and managing the BioLinks project for the Field Studies Council. He set up the Biological Recording Company, where he highlights invertebrate research through the entoLIVE series and runs a wide range of invertebrate courses and events. In addition to its furry residents, Paradise Fields also boasts a variety of interesting habitats ranging from ancient woodland to wildflower meadows with a rich invertebrate fauna to boot. This event is delivered by the Biological Recording Company in partnership with the London Natural History Society. Information Source: The Biological Recording Company | eventbrite

Join Professor Christoph Lindner, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Royal College of Art, for a talk on the digital-spatial strategies that cities like London are using to revivify urban public spaces in the wake of the pandemic. Drawing on findings from his recently published book Aesthetics of Gentrification, Professor Lindner argues that many cities worldwide are experiencing a rise in embodied aesthetic practices – rooted in digital/immersive forms of urbanism – following the restrictions of lockdown and social distancing. Far from being unique to London or the post-pandemic moment, these practices have a long, deep history tied to the neoliberal project of post-industrial renewal. The difference now is that the after-effects of the pandemic, combined with new digital technologies of simulation and immersion, are making it possible to remake cities in more extreme and divisive ways. As cities recover from the pandemic and urban publics return to the shared spaces of the city, there is urgency in understanding these transformations and their effects on contemporary urban life. It is commonplace now for Football League clubs to field several Black players, so much so that it scarcely merits comment. But it wasn’t always like that. In the 1960s it was possible for a player to go through his entire career without ever having a single Black team mate or facing a single Black player on the opposing team. That situation changed gradually during the 1970s and 1980s but being a Black footballer could still be a very lonely experience. Join Bill Hern and David Gleave, authors of Football’s Black Pioneers – The Stories of the First Black Players to Represent the 92 League Clubs, as they celebrate some of the men who first broke down barriers, pioneering footballers, men who faced discrimination and racism alone and, in doing so, paved the way for generations to come and changed the face of British football forever. In a cinematic and visceral documentary mixing intimate archive and interviews and a storming soundtrack, Pauline Black, lead singer of 2-Tone hit band The Selecter, tells her life story in the context of a difficult upbringing and the 2-Tone music movement in 1979. Looking back, Pauline traces her music legacy, as well as how it is relevant to the world today, pushing the boundaries of gender, politics and racism. Pauline, of mixed Nigerian and Jewish heritage, was adopted into a white family in Essex in the 50’s. Her upbringing was defined by casual racism from within her own family. She went on to build positive routes in the Coventry 2-Tone music scene. The Selecter reflected on working-class life in Thatcher's Britain, their music was social reportage with a commitment to anti-racism and anti-sexism. Contributors in the film include: Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson, Don Letts, Skin, Damon Albarn, Rhoda Dakar, Lynval Golding, Mykaell Riley, Sonia Boyce and Jools Holland. Tim Etchells: Words/Worlds Artist, writer and performance maker Tim Etchells draws on diverse aspects of his practice, from recent choreographic explorations to experiments with written and spoken language. From theatre performances he’s created as artistic director of the renowned Sheffield-based ensemble Forced Entertainment to public space neon installations, published fiction, musical collaborations and solo performances, Etchells’ work with words explores both the speed, clarity and vividness with which language can communicate narrative, image and ideas, and its amazing propensity to create rich fields of uncertainty and ambiguity. An introduction to some of the strategies and concerns that have motivated Etchells’ work across four decades Words/Worlds thinks about collaboration, presence, improvisation and the shared unfolding of time that’s at the heart of all performance Tim Etchells is an artist and a writer based in the UK whose work shifts between visual art, fiction and creating original performance. MANIFEST:IO is the symposium for new media and electronic art that was initiated in Berlin in 2023 by transmedial studio TimeLab. Exploring the intersection of new media, electronic arts, and critical discourse, MANIFEST:IO unites artists, media researchers, and creative professionals to challenge norms, provoke dialogue, and push boundaries on the most urgent global issues. In 2025, MANIFEST:IO is proud to partner with IKLECTIK to host its first iteration in London. With over a decade in providing a safer space for artists to engage in their creative practice and critical discourse, IKLECTIK’s contributions go far beyond being a creative platform and extend into their dedication towards community. In a city that is increasingly pushing its creatives out, MANIFEST:IO London invites participants from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland to critically engage with media, share their artistic practices, and connect and share their stories of community building.
