Do you have a space that you would like to turn into a garden, but don’t know where to start? This class is perfect for beginner gardeners or anyone looking for a refresher. We will guide you through the steps to transform your yard into a beautiful garden, including maintenance tips and where to find support and resources. We will also include information and advice on container gardening. This workshop will focus on working with nature, observing your space, and demystifying San Francisco's unique microclimate. With your newfound knowledge, you'll be able to create a manageable garden that aligns with the space you have. Bring your questions! Please note that this workshop focuses on perennial plant gardening, NOT edible food growing. If you are interested in learning about edible plant growing, please register for one of our Grow Your Own Food 2025 workshops. Our expert instructor Carey Craddock is a garden coach, consultant, and horticultural enthusiast. She has been teaching at Garden for the Environment since 1998, first as a Get Up! intern, and then as a staff member until 2003. She trained in both CCSF and Merritt College’s landscape horticulture programs, and loves to combine her passion for art and horticulture into creative projects. She runs Carey Craddock Gardens where she specializes in ecological garden design and growing food. No walk-up registration permitted for this course. Arts Film
Have you ever wondered whether a movie you are watching was filmed in San Francisco or the Bay Area? More than 600 movies, from blockbuster features to lesser-known indies, have been entirely or partially set in the region since 1927, when talkies made their debut. Historian Christopher Pollock will tell stories behind the films and about the sites used. He'll also highlights actors, directors and technical staff who originated from the Bay Area or have come to call it home. Using a broad cross-section of film genres speaker Pollock will explore the role of film as an unintended but fortunate benefit to the preservation community. He will talk about how some on-location movies have become a record of places that have been lost due to well-meaning redevelopment, neglect, demolition, fire, or have otherwise disappeared. Manny’s never turns away anyone for lack of funds. If you need a free ticket, just email "grapefruit" along with the event title to luis@welcometomannys.com . Want to help others attend? Buy a "Pay It Forward" ticket to cover the cost for someone who can’t afford it. Your support helps us keep our events accessible and ensure a diverse audience that reflects San Francisco. Internationally acclaimed bassist/composer Marcus Shelby occupies his own niche in the Bay Area’s jazz eco-system. As the leader of a powerfully swinging 15-piece big band and Yerba Buena Gardens Festival’s resident composer, he’s used the ensemble as a vehicle for developing epic works exploring the abiding ties between jazz and blues and African-American social and political movements. For this concert, Shelby has gathered pieces from four previous YBG Festival commissions inspired by Harriet Tubman, Black baseball, the Ohlone tribelets and the recent pandemic. Featuring guest artists such as vocalist Tiffany Austin, flutist John Calloway, harpist Destiny Muhammad and vibraphonist Dillon Vado, Blues and the Pursuit of Freedom deploys the power of the blues to speak to the present moment. A cultural force that embodies the tension and release of the pursuit of freedom, the blues provide a communal language that transcends the boundaries of instruments, solos and rhythms. In Shelby’s hands, the blues courses through extended musical suites inspired by freedom movements and important moments in the history of Black Americans that are under threat of elimination by the current administration. Supported in part by Yerba Buena Partnership. Information Source: Yerba Buena Gardens Festival | eventbrite

SF Bicycle Coalition Adult Learn to Ride Class | Arguello Boulevard & Lincoln Way

San Francisco
Cycling Sports & Fitness
It's never too late to learn to bicycle! Instructors will work one-on-one to assist participants in learning the basics of balancing, starting, stopping and steering a bike, as well as proper helmet fit and adjustment. Most people learn to ride their bike while taking the class, but even if they don't, they will leave with tips to continue teaching themselves to ride. The first step will be balancing on your bicycle; instructors will first remove the pedals and lower the seat enough so that you can put both feet on the ground. You'll learn balance by taking longer and longer steps until you're "gliding." Then, once you've got that down, we'll show you how to turn confidently and stop smoothly. Once you feel comfortable, we'll reinstall the pedals, so you can incorporate pedaling and learning to steer, and how to steer precisely in circles and figure-eights. You'll finish your lesson by learning how to shift gears so you can handle hills and prepare for more city riding. Please be sure you can sit on your bike seat with both feet flat on the ground. All participants MUST either bring a bike or rent a bike in advance. Bikes will not be available for rental at the class. If you don't have a bicycle, you will be contacted before the class with information on how to rent one. If you are unable to afford a bike rental (about $25), we have a limited budget to cover bike rentals for students. Please contact Qamuuqin (info below) about covering the cost. Please contact Qamuuqin Maxwell (qmaxwell@sfbike.org/‪415-323-0597) with any questions about this program. This class is part of the SFMTA’s Bicycle Safety Education program, presented in partnership with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. This project is made possible by the San Francisco County Transportation Authority through a grant of Proposition L Local Transportation Sales Tax Funds. Who Shapes the AI Story? How Californians Feel About AI | The Julia Morgan Ballroom

Aug 19, 2025 (UTC-7)
San Francisco
Cultural Experiences
Who shapes the story of the technology transforming our lives? The public conversation about the future of AI has been dominated by two opposing views: those who believe AI will destroy humanity and those who believe it will usher in a new golden age of prosperity and human flourishing. The fervor of this debate—coupled with the unknowability of the technology’s development— makes it difficult for policymakers to know how to govern. In the absence of certainty, and with tech CEOs clouding the picture with hype to profit from AI’s unfettered growth, doing nothing may seem the safest route. However, this unwillingness to act is at odds with two current realities: that many of the impacts of AI are already well-documented, and that constituents strongly believe the government should be protecting them against these harms. Many of us believe that swift government action is necessary for AI to work for us, not against us. But how do we navigate the challenges that this narrative environment creates? In what ways might we reshape the narrative to tell a different story: AI, if built carefully and used thoughtfully, can be developed and deployed in a way that promotes safety and fairness—as well as innovation.. Join us on Tuesday, August 19th, at the Julia Morgan Ballroom in San Francisco for a lively discussion about how we can tell that story and work towards a better future together. Communications expert Daniel Stone will share top findings from his AI sentiment polling research. We’ll then hear from Karen Hao, AI journalist and author of Empire of AI , and more in a group discussion. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Agenda: 5:00 pm - Doors open, snacks and drinks will be served 6:00 pm - Welcome and AI polling findings presentation by Daniel Stone 6:25 pm - Panel discussion and audience Q&A 7:15 pm - Cocktails ---------------- If you have any accessibility needs, please specify when you register for the event and we’ll do our best to meet them. We enforce a Code of Conduct at our events. Please take a minute and read it through. Information Source: TechEquity | eventbrite

Join bestselling dark romance and dark academia author Callie Hart at Books Inc. Opera Plaza for a celebration of her wildly popular and highly addictive enemies-to-lovers romantasy novel QUICKSILVER, now available in hardcover! Callie will be joined by musician, content creator, and devoted romantasy reader CRAY. This event is presented in partnership with the Romantasy Book Club at Books Inc. San Leandro. This is a ticketed event. Tickets include admission and a pre-signed copy of Quicksilver (Deluxe Limited Edition) About the book: Do not touch the sword. Do not turn the key. Do not open the gate.Twenty-four-year-old Saeris Fane is good at keeping secrets. No one knows about the strange powers she possesses, or the fact that she has been picking pockets and stealing from the Undying Queen’s reservoirs for as long as she can remember. In the land of the unforgiving desert, there isn’t much a girl wouldn’t do for a glass of water. But a secret is like a knot. Sooner or later, it is bound to come undone. When Saeris comes face-to-face with Death himself, she inadvertently reopens a gateway between realms and is transported to a land of ice and snow. The Fae have always been the stuff of myth, of legend, of nightmares…but it turns out they’re real, and Saeris has landed right in the middle of a centuries-long conflict that might just get her killed. The first of her kind to tread the frozen mountains of Yvelia in over a thousand years, Saeris mistakenly binds herself to Kingfisher, a handsome Fae warrior, who has secrets and nefarious agendas of his own. He will use her Alchemist’s magic to protect his people, no matter what it costs him… or her. Death has a name. It is Kingfisher of the Ajun Gate. His past is murky. His attitude stinks. And he’s the only way Saeris is going to make it home.Be careful of the deals you make, dear child. The devil is in the details... Now with an embossed cover, silver foiling, and an updated interior design. N.B. Quicksilver contains depictions of graphic violence/adult situations and is therefore recommended for readers 17+. For a full list of tropes and TWs, please visit the author's website. Praise for Quicksilver: “This story raises our love of enemies-to-lovers to a whole different level.”— Cosmopolitan “For those who like their slow-burn romances with plenty of quick banter and a healthy dose of spice, Quicksilver is for you.”— Marie Claire “Impossible to put down.”— ScreenRant “Pitch-perfect banter? Check. Astounding world-building? Check. An electric and emotional romance? Double check! The last time I was this enraptured in a romantasy was when I first discovered ACOTAR. I highly recommend this!”— First for Women Callie Hart is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the international phenomenon QUICKSILVER, along with many other bestselling dark romance and dark academia titles. A British expat now living in California, Callie can most likely be found sequestered away in the corner of a library, fantasizing about exciting new realms and the brooding anti-heroes who occupy them. CRAY is a musician, content creator, and avid book reader. For the last 10 years, CRAY has toured the world, played at festivals like Lollapalooza, and written music inspired by her favorite books. You can find her songs in a lot of your favorite authors' book playlists! When she isn't in the studio making music or touring, you can find her at home with her cats and dog, reading or playing video games. CRAY was diagnosed with autism and ADHD as a child and struggled to find her place in the world until she found books and music, which became her safe space. Join us for the premiere launch event for our new book: Pancho Villa: World Champion, 1923, at Sentro Filipino in San Francisco! In 1923, Filipino boxer Francisco “Pancho Villa” Guilledo shattered expectations by becoming the first Asian flyweight world champion. This historic triumph not only ignited the Great Filipino Boxing Era but also emboldened a nation facing the violence of U.S. imperialism. Our book, Pancho Villa: World Champion 1923, tells the incredible story of Villa’s rise from humble beginnings in the Philippines to his world-renowned victory, and how his journey changed boxing forever. Filipino American historian, professor, and cultural worker, Dr. Bernard James Remollino, will share their book in a conversation with sports consultant and CoachingKapwa founder, Carolyn Sideco. The talk will be followed by: Book signing and meet-and-greet with the author. Live performance by Bay Area community organizer and emcee, Power Struggle. Boxing showcase by the Bayanihan Boxing program. Documentary trailer premiere presented by Kapwa Kollektive Vending and resources by various community organizations and creators. Filipina American coffee served courtesy of Masaya Kapé Filipino Food served courtesy of Alex Suniga (MasaraptheHomie) More about the book: In a time when racial prejudice and imperial power shaped the world, a small, determined fighter stepped into the ring and rewrote history. From his early days in the backstreets of Manila to the grand stage of New York’s Polo Grounds, Villa’s perseverance, skill, and honor captured the hearts of millions. Our book blends rich archival research, rare photographs, and engaging narrative to bring his legendary career and the cultural legacy of Filipino boxing to life. This hardcover book tells the deeper story of how boxing became a weapon of resistance for Filipinos under U.S. empire in the early twentieth century. It situates Villa’s triumph within the larger history of colonialism, racial performance, and the politics of the body to demonstrate how one fighter’s journey emboldened a generation and inspired global audiences. In an America grappling with renewed debates over racial justice, immigration, and the legacy of empire, Villa’s story resonates more urgently than ever. As movements and campaigns for immigrant rights shine a spotlight on systemic inequality, this book challenges readers to confront uncomfortable truths about “benevolent assimilation,” racial spectacle, and the ongoing impact of colonial attitudes in sports and society. Some may find this project controversial. It unapologetically critiques U.S. imperial history and centers the voices of those long marginalized. More than a history book, it is an act of protest. By supporting this book, you join in elevating a voice of resistance, reminding us that the fight for justice spans generations and that the lessons of Villa’s era still echo in our streets and stadiums today. Special guest host Anna Joy from Seattle! Since our usual host Yoni is out for the summer, we're bringing you Anna Joy all the way from Seattle to run her fantastic Cuddle Party inspired Happy Humanimals ! It will still follow the usual Cuddle Party rules, but is run a bit different. ✨ Come see Anna Joy bring some sparkly magic to the Bay Area ✨ Note for SF Cuddles regulars: note that vaccination status is not required for this event. Overview Snugs & Connection is our signature Happy Humanimals event. It includes a touch and communication skills workshop followed by a cuddle and connection lab that is lovingly inspired by Cuddle Party™. Happy Humanimals may be a great fit for you if you're a curious person who enjoys affectionate and caring touch, if you're a communication geek (or want to be), or if you want to playfully transform your relationship to your boundaries. The workshop develops the concepts of boundaries, desires, and communication, and is designed for snuggly newbies and pros alike. We offer opportunities to tune into your own intentions and desires, practice saying and receiving "no" with grace, and express needs and wants. We all learn from wading in the kiddie pool before diving in the deep end, so our practices follow a gently deepening trajectory. The rest of the afternoon is spent on the cuddle cushions, where you can relax and practice making requests in a playful and low-stakes environment: you might join a spoon drawer, ask someone to pet your hair, or request something else that will nourish you in the moment. Facilitator support available throughout. All touch will be fully clothed, optional, platonic, verbally requested and granted at any time. Come solo or with a friend or partner. There will be no attempt to gender-balance. Tickets Please choose the ticket that is most suitable for your life situation: $50 — Standard $75 — Supporter — Enable another community member with fewer resources to join $25 — Supported — Be supported by community Ticket sales end day-of-the-event at 12 pm. No tickets will be sold at the door. Complete 1 registration for each attendee. If you purchase a ticket for another person, please use their name and email address. Other details If you are feeling sick or test positive for COVID prior to the event, we are happy to offer a full refund. We do not require proof of a negative COVID rapid test to attend. This event is sober and fragrance free . Please arrive free from fragranced deodorants, perfume, cologne, hair spray, body spray, smoke (this includes cannabis for medicinal use), and clothes that have been laundered with strong smelling detergents. Wearing unscented, natural, and mild deodorants are welcome and encouraged. Wear or bring pajamas or comfy clothes. Think cozy, not sexy. While this event is strictly platonic, we require all participants to be 18 or older. Please note that Happy Humanimals events are not a therapeutic setting, and the facilitators are not operating in the role of counselors. If you have needs that would best be served by a mental health professional, we welcome you, but please do not consider this practice as a substitute for such care. About Your Event Leader Anna Joy Reedy, SEP (she/her) in 2013 found herself in her first cuddle puddle on a dance floor being fed grapes by frolicking little fairies (children). Inspired to recreate this slice of heaven as often as possible and share it with the world, she completed the Cuddlist and Cuddle Party TM certifications along with a series of related trainings. She offers somatic 1:1 touch and trauma sessions; she has facilitated consent workshops in and around Seattle since co-founding Happy Humanimals in 2022.
