We really have an interesting event here for any art lovers, or anyone who just loves a good story! Joe Tucker will be joining us on the 4th of June at 7pm to talk about his new book, The Secret Painter! Joe's Uncle Eric was a beloved yet unconventional figure throughout Joe's life. A shambolically dressed man who lived with his mother for almost eighty years, he had an almost compulsive need to charm strangers with working men's club comedy routines, and appeared to exist only for daily trips to the bookie - and yet had also amassed over five hundred of his own remarkable paintings without anyone ever realising his achievements. Towards the end of his life, Eric requested an exhibition of his work. As Joe and his family sorted through hundreds of paintings of street scenes, circus and theatre performers, and busy pubs, they began to ask more questions about Eric's life: why had this fanatically sociable man never left his mother's home? Had Eric ever experienced love when he painted it so beautifully? And what had driven him to create so much, yet share it so rarely? In this touching, funny and thoughtful investigation of the nature of expression, the ownership of art and the secret life of those nearest to us, Joe Tucker brings us into his uncle's extraordinary and compelling world. Perhaps more importantly, he also brings Eric Tucker's life's work into ours. Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite

We're delighted to have John Robb in Leeds on the 17th of June to talk about his new book, Live Forever: The Rise, Fall and Resurrection of Oasis. Any Oasis fans will be needing to come through and hear what John has to say, as he has absolutely written what will be the definitive book on Britain’s biggest band. In this book, John Robb peels back the layers of Manchester's best known musical export, revealing a tale of ambition, ego, talent, and a whole lot of attitude. From the gritty pubs of Manchester to the dizzying heights of global stardom, this unauthorized biography is a rollercoaster ride through the Gallagher brothers' turbulent lives and the music that defined a generation. But it is also a portrait of Britain around the turn of the millennium and the cultural forces and places that shaped, and were shaped by, two cocksure autodidacts from Burnage – from art to fashion, and from football to politics. Playful, funny and irreverent, and drawing on dozens of interviews and first-hand stories, Live Forever puts Oasis squarely in the Pantheon of Rock ‘n Roll royalty as the last great band of the pre-internet age. So, grab your parka and shades, perfect your swagger, and prepare to be amazed, amused, and maybe even just a little bit shocked. Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite

Let's celebrate romance and enjoy a summer evening drinking wine and talking about love! We have three wonderful authors joining us on the 19th of June for a conversation all about romance! Lucy Vine and Laura Wood will be in conversation with Rebecca Ryan, who will be moderating our event. Book Boyfriend by Lucy Vine Jemma has lived a thousand lives through books. The only life she isn’t living is her own. That is, until the day she finds a note from a stranger in her favourite library book. When she replies, the pair begin a longhand conversation about their love of novels that sees Jemma finally coming out of her shell. Is she ready to fall in love for the first time – with someone she’s never met? Clara has always run away from her problems, but this might finally be one she can’t escape. Everyone wants to know what happened to Clara in America – but Clara isn’t talking. Instead she’s focusing all her energy obsessing over a hot new actor, starring in the TV adaptation of her twin Jemma's favourite book. Soon, Clara is reading every interview, trawling his social media, and following him to showbiz parties in the hopes he’ll notice she’s The One. As the sisters fall hard for two men they’ve never met, it’s time to ask the question: Can either relationship survive the real world? Under Your Spell by Laura Wood 'She only wants three things. He isn't one of them...' Dumped by her cheating ex, fired from her dream job, about to lose her flat: Clementine Monroe is not having a good day. So when her sisters get her drunk and suggest reviving a childhood ritual called the breakup spell, she doesn’t see the harm in it. But now Clemmie has accidentally ruined a funeral, had her first one-night stand, and she’s stuck with a new job she definitely doesn’t want - spending six weeks alone with the gorgeous and very-off-limits rock star, Theo Eliott. He’s the most famous man on the planet. Her life’s a disaster. When it comes to love, Clemmie is learning you should be careful what you wish for. Philosophy of Love by Rebecca Ryan What is love? Is it something spiritual or wholly physical? Can our feelings be explained and quantified? Or are we all actually two halves of a whole? Ask Alice and Luke and you’d receive vastly different answers. Despite her world having been recently dismantled by a messy break-up, Alice would tell you that love is the most important – albeit ineffable – human experiences. But when she once again crosses paths with her old school nemesis, Luke, he challenges this. Luke is a scientist and he’s certain love can be measured and explained – just like everything else. So the two decide to make a bet: they’ll each venture back into dating and if one of them falls in love, Alice wins, if not, then Luke does. But can anyone win when you’re playing with emotions? We're so excited to hear these authors talking about their wonderful books and about the power of romance! Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite

We are thrilled to have Laura Jane Williams joining us on the 23rd of June at 7pm for something a little different from our usual events: a Writing Masterclass! Laura describes the event as: 90 minutes with 30 mins or so for questions and discussion afterwards - bring a notepad and your enthusiasm- no prior experience necessary (although if you've ever had an imaginary argument with somebody in your head or told your friends about something crazy that happened at work last week... you're already a storyteller!) - class will be a series of small exercises broken down into digestible chunks, each building on the last - by the time you leave you will have the beginning two chapters of a story!I teach with a focus on fun and curiosity, and we'll move pretty quickly. I do this so you don't have time to second-guess yourself... you'll be surprised by what we can achieve in an hour and a half! Nice things people have said about my writing workshops: I always leave your courses feeling like you have over-delivered in every way - Amelia I love the focus on curiosity and play and creative expression - Molly I’ve started seeing strangers on the streets as potential characters and I have such a greater understanding of how to tell a story. Thank you for igniting this fire under me. I’ve really enjoyed it - Cristina This class has been such a joy. I’ve felt challenged, encouraged, and bolstered to keep up a personal writing habit outside of work. Taking this class has been the best decision I’ve made in months! - Amy The Book we're celebrating: Laura's new book Love at First Sight follows Jessie, who doesn’t believe in love at first sight. Until one sunny Saturday in London, a fire alarm in Whole Foods throws her into a stranger's arms. Cal is charming and funny: their chemistry is instant. Quick-fire flirting turns into the most romantic day of Jessie’s life. But that evening they're forced apart before swapping numbers. Jessie is devastated – has she just lost the one? After weeks of searching, Cal turns up on her doorstop holding two dozen red roses. It feels like fate. The only thing is, they’re not for her… This event is a Book & Ticket only event. Your ticket will include writing materials, but you are welcome to bring your own notebook and stationary as well. Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite
