The long-awaited sophomore poetry collection by award-winning writer Cathy Linh Che, on familial estrangement, the Vietnam War, and Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. The follow-up to her acclaimed poetry debut Split , Becoming Ghost documents Cathy Linh Che’s parents’ experiences as refugees who escaped the Vietnam War and then were cast as extras in Francis Ford Coppola’s film Apocalypse Now , placing them at the margins of their own story. The poetry collection uses persona, speculation, and the golden shovel form as a means of moving Vietnamese voices from the periphery to the center. The speaker’s disownment raises questions about the challenges of using parents as poetic subjects, telling familial stories to a broader public, and the meaning of forgiveness. Cathy Linh Che is a Vietnamese American writer and multidisciplinary artist. She is the author of Split , winner of the Norma Farber First Book Award from the Poetry Society of America and the Best Poetry Book Award from the Association of Asian American Studies, An Asian American A to Z: A Children’s Guide to Our History , and Becoming Ghost . Her writing has been published in The New Republic , The Nation , and McSweeney’s and she has received awards from MacDowell, Bread Loaf, Tin House, and the Sewanee Writers’ Conference. Queer Billiards Based Game Show SHARK BITE The Queer Poolplayers Association (QPA) presents SHARK BITE, a live, comedy, game show in which poolplayers and comedians from the LGBTQIA+ community vie to win an eight-ball match that encourages its audience and players to roast, distract, and otherwise “shark”the competition. Come see comedians Sunny Laprade and Sheria Mattis in this first edition of Shark Bite alongside local QPA players. Laprade is a NYC based comedian and viral internet creator. She is the producer and host of T4T Comedy, a staff writer for Going Down, and the creator of the variety show Dolls on Tour. Mattis is a Brooklyn-born comedian, who has written for Reductress, Netflix is a Joke, Leslie Jones, and Fran Drescher. Her comedy has been featured on OprahDaily, PBS, and NBC. In real life you can get in a lot of trouble for sharking. But this is a comedy show, so players will not only be allowed to show their teeth, they'll be encouraged to do so by the host, the mononymous Lydia --a bicycle mechanic, organizer, and artist, who was first introduced to a billiards table at age thirteen. Lydia played on a Brooklyn based American Poolplayers Association team from 2014 to 2019; and since November 2023, Lydia has been hosting a popular, monthly pool tournament at Ginger’s Bar. SHARK BITE will be held at Fort Hamilton Distillery . This award-winning distillery and bar has an impressive drink menu and is home to one of the most stylish pool rooms in New York City. Doors open: 7:30pm. Show starts: 8:00pm. Admission: $20. Ages 21 and over (21+) The Queer Poolplayers Association (QPA) is a collaborative project now producing exhibitions and other events in the disciplines of eight-ball and nine-ball for LGBTQIA+ communities. The QPA is headquartered in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn—often referred to as “Gay Ridge.” Follow the QPA on Instagram @queerpoolplayers . Information Source: Queer Poolplayers Association (QPA) | eventbrite

Pioneer Works is excited to team up with Bang on a Can to present the opening night of Long Play 2025 with a performance from the iconic Kim Gordon with her band in the Main Hall. I.U.D and Kassie Krut will open the show. In addition to Kim Gordon's opening concert, we'll be co-present another amazing show in our Main Hall this May featuring a 90th Birthday Tribute to Terry Riley on Sunday, May 4th. For more information about Bang on a Can's Long Play Festival, please visit their website . In addition to direct ticket purchases, entry to this concert is also open to 3-day Long Play Festival Pass holders. About Kim Gordon With a career spanning nearly four decades, Kim Gordon is one of the most prolific and visionary artists today. A co-founder of the legendary Sonic Youth, Gordon has performed all over the world, collaborating with many of music’s most exciting figures including Tony Conrad, Ikue Mori, Julie Cafritz and Stephen Malkmus. Despite the exhaustive nature of her résumé, the most reliable aspect of Gordon’s music may be its resistance to formula. Songs discover themselves as they unspool, each one performing a test of the medium’s possibilities and limits. Her command is astonishing, but Gordon’s artistic curiosity remains the guiding force behind her music. Gordon continued this pursuit on 2019’s No Home Record, her first-ever solo release, produced by Justin Raisen (Angel Olsen, John Cale, Charli XCX, etc.). Borrowing its name from a Chantal Akerman film, No Home Record is, in many ways, a return as much as it is a departure. When Gordon first began playing music in the early 1980s, she used a guitar, a drum machine, and some lyrics sniped from magazine advertisement copy. No Home Record contains echoes of that setup, in both form and concept while highlighting Gordon’s capacity to meld cultural critique, divulgence and humor. Front to back, No Home Record is an expert operation in the uncanny. You don’t simply listen to Gordon’s music; you experience it. Her second solo studio album, The Collective , was released in March 2024, and received two nominations at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards: Best Alternative Music Album and Best Alternative Music Performance. In 2023, Cameron completed a social media endorsement campaign with WILDFANG and was the face of the SKITTLES Pride Campaign to promote LGBTQ+ artists and stories in partnership with GLAAD rights organization (for which she also hosted their awards show in 2017 ), Audible, and her podcast QUEERY . QUEERY features a series of hour-long conversations with some of the brightest luminaries in the LGBTQ+ covering themes of identity and the shifting cultural matrix around gender/sexuality. Additionally, Cameron can be heard giving semi-sarcastic survival advice as the host of Sony Music’s podcast SURVIVE OR DIE TRYING . Cameron was honored with a 2023 Courage Award from the New York City Anti-Violence Project , and has been named a Comic to Watch by The New York Times, Variety, The Guardian, LA Weekly, Time Out Los Angeles, Jezebel, Los Angeles Magazine and Cosmopolitan. Cameron’s 2018 comedy special “Rape Jokes” raised over $100,000 for RAINN, the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization, by releasing the special for free and encouraging viewers to donate in lieu of subscribing and watching on a streaming service. The self-financed hour has been praised as “unapologetically hard-hitting, bracingly timely hour” (Vanity Fair), “blistering, masterful, tragic, hilarious” (New York Magazine). A writer from the The Daily Beast who happened to be in the audience hailed the set as “powerful,” “daring and hilarious,” and as “the first great stand-up set of the #metoo era.” In March 2020, Cameron released her first-ever book, “Save Yourself,” a memoir that tackles sexuality, gender and equality – and how her Catholic upbringing prepared her for a career as an outspoken lesbian comedian in ways the Pope never could have imagined. The book, published by Grand Central Publishing became an instant best seller. 7:00pm Doors / 7:30pm Show $20 GA (mixed seated / standing) Ages 21+ FAQ All Advance and Door tickets are Mixed Seating and Standing. Book Launch of "Go On Pretending" by Alina Adams | MyBiblioteka

Brooklyn
Arts Literary Arts
Come join us for the book launch of Alina Adams' brand new novel, Go On Pretending , a book in which three generations of women battle against the tides of history, from segregated 1950s America to the fall of the USSR and the rise of revolutionary Rojava. You will have a chance to meet the author, and have your book signed. As always, great company and light refreshments will be provided. This event will be livestreamed on Youtube, so people can join us from all over the world. The event is free, but you will have the option to pre-order the book, and make sure you will get your copy at the launch. Every book pre-ordered through us will be either signed for you at the event, or shipped to you with the author's autograph. About the Author: Alina Adams is the NYT-bestselling author of soap-opera tie-ins, figure-skating mysteries, romance, and historical novels. Born in Odessa, USSR, Adams immigrated to the United States at age seven and learned to speak English by watching American Soap Operas. After receiving her B.A. and M.A. in broadcast communications at San Francisco State University, Adams worked in television as a writer and researcher. Years later she penned the As The World Turns book tie-in, Oakdale Confidential, which became a New York Times bestseller. Her first historical novel, The Nesting Dolls, is a Soviet-Jewish historical novel published by HarperCollins in July 2020. My Mother’s Secret, published by History Through Fiction in November 2022, provides readers a rare glimpse into the world's first Jewish Autonomous Region of Birobidzhan while exploring universal themes of identity, love, loss, war, and parenthood. Adams lives in New York City with her husband and their three children. About the book: Rose Janowitz is a trailblazer in the 1950s golden age of television, skillfully navigating the shift from radio to TV soap operas while concealing secrets that could destroy her career. Beneath the spotlight lies her radical past and a forbidden romance with Jonas Cain, the African-American actor who brought Guiding Light to fame on radio. Rose's struggle to hide her relationship—and Jonas’s identity—from the powerful soap-opera creator Irna Phillips puts her resilience to the ultimate test. In 2012, Rose’s granddaughter Libby embarks on her own journey, joining the Women’s Revolution in Rojava, Syria, in search of a utopia and uncovering family secrets that bind her to her mother Emma, a former Soviet expatriate who confronted both political ideologies in 1980s America.
