Doors 7pm / Support 7:30pm / Martin Stephenson 8:15pm Licensed bar available Martin Stephenson began his career as a busker aged 15. He then spent three years plying his trade as the guitar player in various bands in the North East of England . But Martin wanted more, he wanted to tell stories of his own and he was quickly developing ways of doing just that. He developed his song-writing technique by firstly learning a few licks from a Spanish guitar book and repeated the process with Jazz, Blues, Country, SkifFle, Reggae etc. Eventually, this glorious collision of styles would become the trademark which Martin has carried through his career of almost 40 years. Martin formed his band The Daintees , who became busking sensations and were signed by Kitchenware at around the same time as Prefab Sprout and Hurrah! The band, and indeed Martin, have always been known for their incredible range of styles, each album covering a multitude of genres, tempos and moods. The Daintees went on to release four critically acclaimed albums between 1986 & 1992; Boat To Bolivia, Gladsome Humour and Blue, Salutation Road , and The Boys Hear t. https://daintees.co.uk Martin has since supported himself through a combination of extensive live work and a multitude of self financed solo albums. 2000 saw the reformation of the Daintees , and to this day Martin splits his time between solo and small collaborative projects with band albums and annual celebratory Daintees UK tours. “… they [ The Daintees ] exude so much warmth and charm that you walk away wishing good to all mankind and wanting to hug everyone you encounter.” – Rockshot Magazine Support from The Humdrum Express The Humdrum Express... https://www.thehumdrumexpress.com Championed by BBC 6 Music and 'famed' for withering critique, The Humdrum Express (singer/songwriter Ian Passey) breezily delivers offbeat observation, social commentary and sharp wit; fused with familiar cultural references, surreal characters and subtle puns. Solo Humdrum gigs mix fast-paced, wordy acoustic folk with acerbic poems and irreverent chat. Cultural Experiences
If you're new to Tabletop Roleplaying Games, or if you just want to try something a little different, then this event might be a great choice for you. It'll be hosted every two weeks by an experienced Game Master, and the games will be one shots; meaning you can level your character and jump in and out at your leisure. What is the Sword Also Speaks? The Sword Also Speaks is a traditional fantasy-inspired tabletop roleplaying game that utilises a deck of playing cards over more traditional dice rolling mechanics. As players journey through the game, they'll face fantastical challenges, and the cards they draw will decide if they're a hero or if things go hilariously wrong. It's like any other TTRPG, but with more shuffling and less math. What is a Roleplaying Game? A roleplaying game allows players to assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting. They make decisions, take on challenges by utilising their skills and abilities, and work together to tell a unique story. What is a Game Master? The Game Master 'GM' is the referee of the game. They will be the one guiding the players through the story and reacting to their decisions throughout. While in most games, the players will work with the Game Master to create an amazing story, in The Sword Also Speaks, the Game Master works against them when it comes to drawing cards. What is a Trick-Taking Game? Trick-taking is a type of game where players around a table will try to win "tricks" by placing cards on the table. In most games, the player with the highest card will win the trick and score points. The Sword Also Speaks is primarily a trick taking game, meaning when characters use their skills, they will draw cards and try to be the highest at the table. What do you need to play? To properly play The Sword Also Speaks, you will need to bring your own deck of traditional playing cards (including jokers). Besides that, though, we provide everything you need to play, including character sheets. You can also create a level one character before the game, or use one of our pregenerated characters instead! You can find the basic ruleset (along with details on character creation) at this link: https://swordalsospeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/The-Sword-Also-Speak-Playtest-Basic-Ruleset-v1.7.pdf What makes The Sword Also Speaks different from other TTRPGs? Arts Comedy
The makers of 2024 NZ Int’l Comedy Fest hit H.R. The Musical return to Christchurch with their solo verbatim comedy set in a lecture theatre, where “outrageously funny” Mika Austin takes you back to the classroom for a quick-fire education, word for word. Seven years of verbatim quotes from 7,000 pages of university notes are gleefully stitched together in this solo show following eight characters across multiple subjects. From linguistics to education to law and policy, this merciless examination of lecturers and back-row bandits is guaranteed to get you a degree in 60 minutes. The show premiered in seven living rooms and a bookshop in Auckland Fringe, and toured to Melbourne direct from a sold-out season at Auckland’s Basement Theatre. It has since been staged at Dunedin Arts Festival, The University of Auckland Business School, the prestigious Northern Club, a warehouse, and even a church. In 2022, all Christchurch performances of this show at Little Andromeda completely sold out. Yoga Sports & Fitness
New to paddleboarding? New to yoga? Doesn't matter! all our SUP yoga classes are completely beginner friendly so that anyone can have a go. There's space to go at your own pace, perhaps challenge yourself or just enjoy a new experience; put your feet in the water and breathe in the sights, smells and sounds all around you. SUP yoga is all about getting outdoors and embracing a new perspective. The added challenge of being on the water really helps to focus your mind and bring you into the moment, and with that added focus comes the added ability to surprise yourself. This activity is perfect for: Everyone! It's a great opportunity to challenge yourself, have a bit of fun if you like, and to bring a bit of silliness into your practice. But it is also just a really lovely way to relax and unwind. No matter your experience or ability there will be something to try and always an invitation to just rest and enjoy your environment, to breathe and listen, be still and just drink it all in; this is wild SUP yoga! What you'll be doing Meet and greet at the sailing club followed by an opportunity to change, use the bathroom and talk through any concerns you may have. A 15 - 20 minute safety and instructional briefing on land before we head out. Head out onto the water for a short paddle downstream, on your knees or standing, no SUP experience is necessary, you will learn the basics on land. You will learn how to anchor your boards securely and what to do with your paddle. We will move through our 45-minute sequence with plenty of demos and clear instructions, you'll then have a nice long shavasana at the end (a lovely lie down on the board, being connected to nature). When we are done there will be an opportunity for photos and an invitation to try or learn anything you didn’t get to do during the sequence. On the way back to the clubhouse there is an invitation to swim with your board (Alex is a qualified STA level 2 open water coach and will keep you safe) Shower and changing rooms are available at the clubhouse before you head home. Get a discount voucher to put towards any of our SUP related experiences! Activity duration: approximately 1.5hrs. Session location: Arden Sailing Club.
