Jo Hamilton: The Post Office Scandal and My Extraordinary Fight for Justice | Manchester Central Library

Blink Publishing and Manchester Libraries present an evening with Jo Hamilton at Central Library. 'My first big discrepancy came in the shape of a £2,000 shortfall that just made no sense at all. Of all the things that kept me awake once in the thick of the nightmare that unfolded, it was being stuck in that truly incomprehensible moment where the mere touch of a button suddenly turned £2,000 into £4,000 within three minutes on that cold December night in 2003.' Jo Hamilton was one of more than 700 sub-postmasters prosecuted between 2000 and 2014 based on information from the Post Office's faulty Horizon accounting system. She was told to put right a wrong she hadn't committed and pushed to the very brink of her existence - remortgaging her house, borrowing from anyone she could in order to repay money that she hadn't taken, and questioning her own sanity. Immortalised in ITV smash hit drama, Mr Bates v The Post Office , this is Jo Hamilton's extraordinary first-hand account of how she built a Post Office that was at the very heart of her community and lost it all through no fault of her own. For the first time, beyond the headlines and the corridors of the High Court and the UK's political institutions, we will finally hear Jo's full story and the human side of this scandal as well as the untold struggle she faced during the biggest miscarriages of justice in modern history. Ultimately, this is a story of hope and the strength of community and the ability of a few to fight back against the odds. Information Source: Manchester Library and Information Service | eventbrite

Ancoats
Cultural Experiences
Theme of this netwalk We explore Ancoats, past and present. Described as the world’s first industrial suburb, workers once lived in the shadows of huge mills. These factories ‘miracles of modern times’ both attracted and shocked 19th Century tourists. Today’s urban village frequently features as one of the ‘coolest places in the world’ (Time Out). With Cutting Room Square, Murray Mills, Little Italy, Anita St, Sankey’s Soap, St Peter’s and more, we’ll cover new and old Ancoats. Who are these netwalks for? Business professionals who are interested in Manchester history, and like informal networking. Suitable whether you know the city very well or not at all. Guests often work in law, accountancy, banking, property, marketing etc in the city and beyond. Where and when? Meet outside the Crown & Kettle pub, corner of Oldham Road and Great Ancoats Street. The walk starts at 12.30pm and ends at 1.30pm but I’ll be there from 12.15pm for anyone who wants to fit in some networking before we start. Note this netwalk starts and ends at the edge of the city centre, so remember to block out enough time in your diaries to get to and from the walk. Practical details This walk includes some steps so contact me if this might be a problem for you. Netwalks go ahead in all weathers, so please dress for the weather and a walk around town. Please let me know if you do not wish your name and company name to appear on a list of attendees. The event does not include lunch. About netwalks Find out more about the city's history and architecture, and hear plenty of entertaining stories of Mancunians past, all while mixing with fellow professionals and members of Manchester’s business community. You can also book private walks. Philippa qualified as a Green Badge guide in 2009, achieving the highest marks in her class, and has guided guests in the city ever since. She started Manchester netwalks in 2014. Information Source: Philippa Vishnyakov | eventbrite

We can't wait to welcome Cory Doctorow to Blackwell's to discuss his latest novel PICKS AND SHOVELS and his wider work as an author and activist. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: Enshittification was a choice. The decay of the once-great internet into five giant websites, each filled with screenshots of the other four, was a choice. Policy choices that sidelined privacy and labor protection and ignored monopolisaiton created the enshitternet. In PICKS AND SHOVELS, Cory Doctorow visits the moment those first choices were being made, in a historical technothriller that takes us back to the heroic era of the PC revolution and the moment where it all started to go wrong. Picks and Shovels stars Martin Hench, Doctorow's hard-charging, two-fisted high-tech forensic accountant. It's a standalone novel in a series that includes the bestselling novels Red Team Blues and The Bezzle, In this volume, we learn the origin story of Silicon Valley's first - and best - finance-crime fighting spreadsheet sleuth, born in fraud and fire. About the author: Cory Doctorow is a science fiction author, activist and journalist. He is the author of many books, most recently PICKS AND SHOVELS and THE BEZZLE (followups to RED TEAM BLUES) and THE LOST CAUSE, a solarpunk science fiction novel of hope amidst the climate emergency. He famously coined the term "enshittification" to describe the reduction in the quality of services provided (see: Google) as a consequence of profit-seeking. Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of a book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. Arts Literary Arts
We're are thrilled to welcome Julia Armfield back to Blackwell's for the paperback publication of Private Rites, an uneasy, water-logged tale of family, queer love and faith at the end of the world. Julia will be in conversation with Jess White. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: It's been raining for a long time now, for so long that the lands have reshaped themselves. Old places have been lost. Arcane rituals and religions have crept back into practice. Sisters Isla, Irene and Agnes have not spoken in some time when their estranged father dies. A famous architect revered for making the new world navigable, he had long cut himself off from public life. They find themselves uncertain of how to grieve his passing when everything around them seems to be ending anyway. As the sisters come together to clear the grand glass house that is the pinnacle of his legacy, they begin to sense that the magnetic influence of their father lives on through it. Something sinister seems to be unfolding, something related to their mother's long-ago disappearance and the strangers who have always been unusually interested in their lives. Soon, it becomes clear that the sisters have been chosen for a very particular purpose, one with shattering implications for their family and their imperilled world. About the author: Julia Armfield is a fiction writer, living in London with her wife and cat. Her work has been published in Granta, The White Review and Best British Short Stories 2019 and 2021. In 2019, she was shortlisted for the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year award. She was longlisted for the Deborah Rogers Award 2018, and won the White Review Short Story Prize 2018 and a Pushcart Prize in 2020. She is the author of salt slow, a collection of short stories, which was longlisted for the Polari Prize 2020 and the Edge Hill Prize 2020. Her debut novel, Our Wives Under The Sea, was shortlisted for the Foyles Fiction Book of the Year Award 2022 and won the Polari Prize 2023. Her second novel, Private Rites, was longlisted for the inaugural Climate Fiction Prize in 2024. Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book.
