Men in Love There wasn’t an album they wouldn’t buy, or a drug they wouldn’t try. Then it spiralled out of control . . . They were left with nothing. Nothing but the eternal quest of all men: the search for love. Opening in the late 1980s as rave culture is born and moving into the 1990s, Men In Love reunites the Trainspotting crew for a riotous new journey. Renton, Spud, Sick Boy and Begbie leave heroin behind and seek joy, and the hope of redemption, on the dance floor. Each wants to feel alive in the closing years of Thatcher’s Britain, and they fill their days with sex and romance and trying to get ahead. Taking in Edinburgh, London, Amsterdam and Paris, the group charges towards an unexpected event: Sick Boy’s wedding day. But is falling in love the answer, or just another doomed quest? Irvine Welsh Irvine Welsh was born and raised in Edinburgh. His first novel,Trainspotting, has sold over one million copies in the UK and was adapted into an era-defining film. He has written thirteen further novels, including the number one bestsellerDead Men’s Trousers, four books of shorter fiction and numerous plays and screenplays.Crime andThe Long Knives have been adapted into a television series starring Dougray Scott as Ray Lennox. We can't wait to welcome Cory Doctorow to Blackwell's to discuss his latest novel PICKS AND SHOVELS and his wider work as an author and activist. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: Enshittification was a choice. The decay of the once-great internet into five giant websites, each filled with screenshots of the other four, was a choice. Policy choices that sidelined privacy and labor protection and ignored monopolisaiton created the enshitternet. In PICKS AND SHOVELS, Cory Doctorow visits the moment those first choices were being made, in a historical technothriller that takes us back to the heroic era of the PC revolution and the moment where it all started to go wrong. Picks and Shovels stars Martin Hench, Doctorow's hard-charging, two-fisted high-tech forensic accountant. It's a standalone novel in a series that includes the bestselling novels Red Team Blues and The Bezzle, In this volume, we learn the origin story of Silicon Valley's first - and best - finance-crime fighting spreadsheet sleuth, born in fraud and fire. About the author: Cory Doctorow is a science fiction author, activist and journalist. He is the author of many books, most recently PICKS AND SHOVELS and THE BEZZLE (followups to RED TEAM BLUES) and THE LOST CAUSE, a solarpunk science fiction novel of hope amidst the climate emergency. He famously coined the term enshittification to describe the reduction in the quality of services provided (see: Google) as a consequence of profit-seeking. Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of a book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. We're are thrilled to welcome Julia Armfield back to Blackwell's for the paperback publication of Private Rites, an uneasy, water-logged tale of family, queer love and faith at the end of the world. Julia will be in conversation with Jess White. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: It's been raining for a long time now, for so long that the lands have reshaped themselves. Old places have been lost. Arcane rituals and religions have crept back into practice. Sisters Isla, Irene and Agnes have not spoken in some time when their estranged father dies. A famous architect revered for making the new world navigable, he had long cut himself off from public life. They find themselves uncertain of how to grieve his passing when everything around them seems to be ending anyway. As the sisters come together to clear the grand glass house that is the pinnacle of his legacy, they begin to sense that the magnetic influence of their father lives on through it. Something sinister seems to be unfolding, something related to their mother's long-ago disappearance and the strangers who have always been unusually interested in their lives. Soon, it becomes clear that the sisters have been chosen for a very particular purpose, one with shattering implications for their family and their imperilled world. About the author: Julia Armfield is a fiction writer, living in London with her wife and cat. Her work has been published in Granta, The White Review and Best British Short Stories 2019 and 2021. In 2019, she was shortlisted for the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year award. She was longlisted for the Deborah Rogers Award 2018, and won the White Review Short Story Prize 2018 and a Pushcart Prize in 2020. Her debut novel, Our Wives Under The Sea, was shortlisted for the Foyles Fiction Book of the Year Award 2022 and won the Polari Prize 2023. Her second novel, Private Rites, was longlisted for the inaugural Climate Fiction Prize in 2024. Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. We are excited to welcome Dan Richards to the shop to discuss OVERNIGHT: Journeys, Conversations and Stories After Dark. Dan will be in conversation with James Davis. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book, which is available at a special price of £15 when purchasing a Book & Ticket. About the book: There is something special about the night. For many, just the idea of it conjures thoughts of starlit skies, romance, refuge, of being tucked up in bed. For some, the night means fear, vulnerability, danger, sleeplessness. At night things go bump, monsters hide under beds, owls take wing and foxes prowl. For others still, nightfall signals the start of work. Overnight is a celebration of all things nocturnal, of those who labour while the rest of us sleep: the bakers, health workers, sailors, couriers, broadcasters, drivers, fishers, the emergency services and more. And it is also a hymn to nighttime wildlife, dreams and art. We'll hang out with bats and look at the stars. We'll learn what Moomintroll has to teach us. We'll travel by ship, train, racing car and foot. There will be more than one surprise along the way. Through a series of personal journeys Dan Richards explores what the night means to a fascinating array of people, taking us from night terrors to the glow of watching the dawn break on the summer solstice. Overnight will change the way you think about the hours after dark. About the author: Dan Richards (@Dan_Zep) is a writer and broadcaster. His first book Holloway was a collaboration with Robert Macfarlane & Stanley Donwood in 2012. Since then he written four further books, The Beechwood Airship Interviews, Climbing Days, Outpost, and Overnight: Journeys, Conversations and Stories After Dark. His BBC Radio 4 series, Only After Dark, was broadcast to acclaim in 2022. Dan has written for the New York Times, Guardian, Economist, Esquire and Monocle. He lives in Edinburgh. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of the book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. Arts Literary Arts
The Mythmakers Through narrative and comic panels, Hendrix chronicles Lewis and Tolkien's near-idyllic childhoods, then moves on to both men's horrific tour of the trenches of World War I to their first meeting at Oxford in 1929, and then the foreshadowing, action, and aftermath of World War II. He reveals the shared story of their friendship, in all its ups and downs, that gave them confidence to venture beyond academic concerns (fantasy wasn't considered suitable for adult reading, but the domain of children), shaped major story/theme ideas, and shifted their ideas about the potential of mythology and faith. The Mythmakers also shows the camaraderie and the importance of the social/literary circle of friends called the Inklings, and how the friendship of these two great men fell apart and came together again. Hendrix concludes describing how the writings of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien had re-enchanted the 20th century, after two World Wars. In writing aimed at scholars, adults, and young people, these two tweedy academics altered the course of storytelling and embraced the concept that fantasy writing for an adult audience was an accepted form of literature. The format is similar to The Faithful Spy: prose interspersed with images and narrative comics. The narration is often conversations between a knowledgeable wizard and a comical lion. Through brisk conversation between these two friends, they explain some of the bigger ideas in an approachable and entertaining way. Throughout the story, there are gateways that lead readers to the back matter where certain themes, such as how myth/fantasy evolved or the art of world-building, are discussed more fully. This device keeps the main story flowing quickly and smoothly for those readers not interested in the more academic ideas behind the narrative. Gareth Hinds Gareth Hinds is the creator of critically-acclaimed graphic novels based on literary classics, including Beowulf (which Publisher’s Weekly called a “mixed-media gem”), King Lear (which Booklist named one of the top 10 graphic novels for teens), The Merchant of Venice (which Kirkus called “the standard that all others will strive to meet” for Shakespeare adaptation), The Odyssey (which garnered four starred reviews and a spot on ten “best of 2010” lists), Romeo and Juliet (which Kirkus called “spellbinding”), and Macbeth (which the New York Times called “stellar” and “a remarkably faithful rendering”). Gareth is a recipient of the Boston Public Library’s “Literary Lights for Children” award. His books can be found in bookstores and English classrooms across the country, and his illustrations have appeared in such diverse venues as the Society of Illustrators, the New York Historical Society, and over a dozen published video games. John Hendrix John Hendrix is a New York Times bestselling author and illustrator. His books include The Faithful Spy: Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the Plot to Kill Hitler, called a Best Book of 2018 by NPR, Drawing Is Magic: Discovering Yourself in a Sketchbook, Miracle Man: The Story of Jesus, and many others. His award-winning illustrations have also appeared on book jackets, newspapers, and magazines all over the world. His collection The Holy Ghost: A Spirited Comic, with an introduction by Patrick McDonnell was released in 2022 from Abrams ComicArts. John’s newest graphic novel, The Mythmakers: The Remarkable Fellowship of C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, about the literary and spiritual friendship between Lewis and Tolkienis out now. We realise it can be difficult for a goalkeeper to be spotted, and we wanted to give our goalkeepers more opportunities. We have since opened it to all goalkeepers and built great relationships with professional clubs. Since the inception of our trial days two years ago, we've been instrumental in turning the dreams of numerous goalkeepers into reality. Three goalkeepers have been signed by Brighton, two each by Hull City and Reading, and one each by Portsmouth, Barnsley, Bristol City and Oxford United after being spotted at our trial days. The most recent one, Nottingham Forest signed Charlie in October after getting spotted on our trial day. Three of these goalkeepers, like Zach, have been called up to the England setup since signing. One keeper secured a scholarship at Colchester United, and Chelsea Ladies signed a girl after being identified at our trial days. These success stories are a testament to the opportunities we provide, even for those who might have thought their chance had gone. All your child might need this opportunity, and they’ll have a great time doing it! On the trial day, your child can showcase their talent and have lots of fun doing it. Plus, experience playing at some fantastic facilities. What have you got to lose? Sells Pro Training will provide a link between the professional and grassroots game, creating opportunities for students to meet and train with top professional keepers. We will be the first steps in developing the goalkeepers of the future with the aim of creating pathways for other students into coaching, scholarships or a high level of football. Via our close links to the professional game, our goalkeepers will be given a chance to be seen by top clubs. • Professional facilities • Proven results • Professional coaching • Direct contact with professional football clubs • Showcase sessions designed to help you shine • Friendly approach to the day • Feedback to help you develop Premier League Academy Goalkeeping Coach“Having attended Sells residential camps and sessions, I have been very impressed with the level of quality coaching the young goalkeepers receive, as well as the environment which supports learning and enjoyment.“The content of the sessions not only challenges the goalkeepers but also replicates the demands of the modern game.“The attention to detail on all aspects of the camp was tremendous.“The care and support provided for each young goalkeepers, on both a personal and goalkeeping level were second to none.” Under 23 Championship Goalkeeper Coach“Kids smiling and having fun is always the first thing I think of after attending Matt and his team’s events.“The facilities sourced are top class, and the content and learning that goes on is my opinion is excellent.“The environment they create together, with the care and effort they all put into each child is admirable, and I always look forward to attending their events.” Championship Academy Goalkeeping Coach“I just wanted to say a big thank you for having me last night.“It was great to see so many goalkeepers and chat to all the staff, and it looked a fantastic operation.“To see so many goalkeepers flying around as they were shows what a great job you guys are doing!” Information Source: Sells Pro Training | eventbrite

We are delighted to welcome Jenn Ashworth back to the shop for the Manchester launch of her latest work, The Parallel Path. Jenn will be in conversation with Helen Mort Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: Burnt out and longing for an escape, Jenn Ashworth emerged from lockdown with a compulsive need to walk - and to walk away. Armed with little more than the knowledge imparted by a two-day orienteering course and a set of maps, she embarked on the most epic of English walks: Wainwright's Coast to Coast. Guided not just by Wainwright's writing but also by daily letters from her friend Clive - facing an epic journey of his own - Jenn's pilgrimage soon becomes more than just walking: a chance to reconnect and excavate, to re-engage with the act of caring for others and for oneself. But the walk's tricky terrain is not the only thing standing in Jenn's way. As days go by, her balance begins to fail her and the act of putting one foot in front the other becomes a new exercise in caution. When a vicious heatwave forces her to pause her expedition and gives her an opportunity to investigate the new limitations of her body, Jenn is confronted with a life-altering diagnosis - and a new path of self-discovery. About the author: Jenn Ashworth was born in Preston and studied at Cambridge and Manchester. Her novels include A Kind of Intimacy, The Friday Gospels and Fell. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2018. In 2019 she published Notes Made While Falling, a memoir told in a series of essays, followed by the novel is Ghosted: A Love Story which was Shortlisted for the Portico Prize in 2022. We are thrilled to welcome Elaine Castillo to the shop to discuss her novel, MODERATION, a piercing look at big tech, virtual worlds and human connection. Elaine will be in conversation with Susan Barker, author of Old Soul. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: Girlie, a thirty-something Filipinx-American, works a day job at a social-media moderation centre, flagging and removing the very worst that makes it on to the internet. She's good at it, too - dispassionate, unflinching, maybe because she learned by necessity to cauterise all her emotions when she was still a kid - so it's no surprise to anyone when the social-media company for which she works offers her a big pay rise and an office to start moderating its new venture: virtual-reality theme parks, stunning simulations of civilizations long-since dead. Despite the isolation that virtual reality requires from colleagues, friends, and family, the unbelievable perks of her new job mean she can solve a lot of her family’s problems with money and mobility. She doesn’t have to think about the childhood home they lost back in the Bay Area, or history at all—she can just pay any debts that come due. But when she meets William Cheung, Playground’s wry, reticent co-founder (now Chief Product Officer) and slowly unearths some of his secrets, and finds herself somehow falling in love, she’ll learn that history might be impossible to moderate and the future utterly impossible to control. Castillo is a literary firecracker... Reading her is like pressing your finger on a bruise just to feel the thrill. If you liked Gabrielle Zevin's Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and/or The Circle by Dave Eggers, you'll like this. - Pandora Sykes About the author: Elaine Castillo, named one of “30 of the Planet’s Most Exciting Young People” by the Financial Times, was born and raised in the Bay Area. Her debut novel, America Is Not the Heart, was a finalist for numerous prizes including the Elle Big Book Award, the Center for Fiction Prize, and the Aspen Words Literary Prize and was named a best book of 2018 by NPR, Real Simple, Lit Hub, The Boston Globe, San Francisco Chronicle, The New York Post, Kirkus Reviews, and the New York Public Library. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of the book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. Alan Buckley "Still" book launch | The Community Works

Oxford
Arts Literary Arts
On 25 July at 7.30pm in The Community Works, we’ll celebrate the publication of Still, the second full poetry collection by Alan Buckley. Still has its origins in the third lockdown of January 2021, when Alan began writing short, tightly structured poems during – and prompted by – his daily walk from East Oxford’s Marsh Park to the Lye Valley nature reserve. The apparently narrow focus of these poems belies their scope and ambition, as Still repeatedly shows the reader that “nothing is too mundane / to be transformed.” There’ll also be guest readings from OPL regulars Carl Tomlinson and Zoe Olivia Brown, and the evening will be hosted by Sophia Blackwell, who played a big part in Oxford’s spoken word scene back in the noughties. Tickets are £5 each (£2 concessions). The building is accessible, but if you have any specific access needs, please drop us an email at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com beforehand. Doors will open at 7.00pm. Still has already been gathering praise ahead of its publication in July by Blue Diode Press, an independent poetry publisher based in Edinburgh: Still asks the reader to notice the ordinary moments that often contain profound connection – human to human, human to the natural world, and that human observing the natural world interacting with itself… I found myself reaching for these poems again and again as a reminder of how to see magic in the ordinary world that I might “otherwise have missed,” and how often it’s those small encounters that save us “when nothing else / will.” – Marjorie Lotfi Alan Buckley is one of those secret gems of UK poetry whose work can't help but grow and grow in stature. His latest book is a truly virtuoso performance – an entire collection written in an entirely new form. These ‘douzaines’ are crammed with incident and insight. They are vital, enthralling waymarkers on a path we can’t help but follow, through landscape, through time, towards ourselves. – John Glenday A little more about the readers: Sophia Blackwell is the author of five books of poetry, fiction and non-fiction, including The Fire-Eater’s Lover and The Other Woman, which was longlisted for the Polari Prize, from Burning Eye Books. Her most recent book, The Poetry Writers’ Handbook, was published by Bloomsbury in 2022. Carl Tomlinson lives on a smallholding in Oxfordshire. His poems have appeared in Orbis, South, Spelt, The High Window, The Alchemy Spoon and several anthologies. His debut pamphlet, Changing Places was published in 2021 by Fair Acre Press. Zoe Olivia Brown is a poet and biologist from The Bahamas, currently based in Oxford as she pursues her PhD. She writes poetry rooted in her personal experiences, exploring themes of identity, place, human connection, and the heart. Alan Buckley is the author of two pamphlets (Shiver and The Long Haul), and the full collections Touched (HappenStance 2020), and Still (Blue Diode Press 2025). His poems have been highly commended in the Forward and Bridport prizes. He was a founding editor of the award-winning pamphlet publisher ignitionpress, and has taught creative writing to young people with both First Story and Arvon. He lives in Oxford, where he also works as a psychotherapist. Information Source: Oxford Poetry Library | eventbrite
