Chimeric Animal Self-Portraits | Art Gallery of Burlington
Apr 26–May 3, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Burlington
Age: 18+ Date: Saturdays, April 26 + May 3, 2025 Time: 1 -4 PM Cost: M $140 and NM $160 (includes material and firing fee) Instructor: Jonah Strub Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought, “Hmmm, I love my face, but I really wish the rest of me was a cat”? If this sounds like you, today is your lucky day! Ceramic sculptor Jonah Strub is teaching a two-part workshop in which students will learn proper handbuilding techniques for self portraiture, and surface decoration with underglazes to create creatures that are part you, and part animal. Animals can be real, mythological, or hybrids of many kinds of critters - creativity and silliness are strongly encouraged! This workshop is suitable for all levels but some experience with clay handbuilding will be beneficial. To get the most out of the workshop and to aide the instructor, students are encouraged to arrive with an idea for their animal self portrait, along with basic sketches and/or reference images. Jonah Strub is a Toronto-based ceramic sculptor. Jonah’s artwork is a visual love letter to the aesthetics of camp, kitsch, musical theatre, Yiddish humour, and drag. Jonah strives to project joy and playfulness through his work. By using humour, bright colours, animal prints, and bushels of body hair, Jonah highlights the joys of Matzo ball-flavoured femininity, effervescent queerness, the beauty of bric-a-brac, and the opulence of outrageous up-dos. ATTIRE: Your clothing will get messy from the materials and media utilized in your class so please dress appropriately or bring an apron. Also, closed-toe shoes are mandatory. ALLERGIES OR SPECIAL NEEDS? Important - Notify us on your registration if the student has an allergy, health concerns, or a learning exception that could impact participation in the class. We’re back for another season of Family Open Studio fun!! After a successful winter’s worth of child-led creativity, we are excited to bring you another season of material-oriented sessions. Participants are free to come up with their own ideas, and work with the materials provided to bring those ideas to life. Grownups are encouraged to assist, especially with trickier tasks like using a glue gun, and to tune into their children’s creative inner worlds. Every other week, we’ll roll out a new material to try, with instructors on hand to help you come up with a good plan. Make sure you take a stroll through our current exhibitions to get inspired! Stop by the Take & Make cart if you’re looking for some free art supplies, or for somewhere to drop off supplies you’re no longer using. This material is about as classic as it gets – with paint, paper, brushes and a colourful imagination, you’ll be painting your way to a joyful afternoon.
