Champion swimmer, trailblazer and film idol - the adventurous life of our first Hollywood superstar! Join bestselling author of Sister Viv and The Remarkable Mrs Reiby, Grantlee Kieza, as he shares his latest book, the inspiring true story of the swimming champion and Hollywood star, Annette Kellerman. Born into a daring, musical family in 1886, Annette Kellerman was made for the stage—her first love—and encouraged to defy social norms. Diagnosed with rickets as a child, she took up swimming for therapy and soon became an Australian champion, beating boys, breaking records, and astonishing crowds with high dives. By 1905, 18-year-old Annette was in England attempting to swim the Channel and set endurance records. She scandalised the public with a one-piece swimsuit that exposed her arms and legs, revolutionising women’s fashion and popularising the sport. London audiences were dazzled by her vaudeville act and underwater ballet. Dubbed ‘The Perfect Woman,’ she became Hollywood’s first great sex symbol, known for risqué costumes—or none at all—and was among the highest-paid entertainers of her time. Her life inspired an Oscar-nominated film starring Esther Williams. Yet, Annette saw her greatest achievement as promoting health, fitness, and independence for women, leaving a lasting impact on millions. Copies of Annette Kellerman, Australian Mermaidwill be available for purchase courtesy of Shakespeare's Bookshop. Bookings essential.
