Join the Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup (GLPC) , an initiative of Pollution Probe and the Council of the Great Lakes Region along with the Bay Area Restoration Council at Harbour West Marina to sort, characterize, and count plastic waste and other debris caught in our plastic capture technology! Seabins are devices at the surface of the water designed to catch and trap floating plastic and debris for safe and easy removal from our waterways! From plastic fragments, foam pellets, and tape to cigarette butts, bottle caps, and food wrappers, these items are harmful to life in and around the lake. It is crucial to catch, remove, and examine the types of litter that enter the Great Lakes, for the health of our aquatic ecosystems. Every piece of debris removed from Lake Ontario is a step towards a cleaner, healthier, and more beautiful lake that we can all enjoy! All equipment required will be provided by GLPC, and we only ask you to dress appropriately for the weather, wear sunscreen, and bring a reusable water bottle! *The event end time may vary depending on how much waste was collected in the Seabins. Directions: If you are coming by Main Street to James Street and turn north (left) follow James Street to Guise Street and turn left (west). The parking lot is on your right and shared with the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Jamie at hamilton .glpc@gmail.com or Kaeley at kaeley@bayarearestoration.ca. About the Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup: The Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup, an initiative of Pollution Probe and the Council of the Great Lakes Region, uses innovative capture technologies to prevent and remove plastic in the Great Lakes, from the St. Lawrence River to Lake Superior and everywhere in between. By analyzing the plastic collected, the initiative provides vital information about pollution sources and pathways, while engaging local communities, government, industry, and consumers around how we can all work together to end plastic pollution. The largest initiative of its kind in North America, the Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup is made possible through support from a network of funders and collaborators across the binational Great Lakes region. Musical Arts
An all-star Canadian cast of award-winning blues and roots musicians will perform a special concert honouring the father of Soul - Ray Charles!  Friday, August 1st at Shawn & Ed Brewing Co. Doors open at 6:00pm, Show is at 8:00pm. Come early for a delicious Beer Pie pizza and some refreshing LagerShed brews.  Regular seats - $25 plus tax & service fee Guaranteed seats with backs - $27.50 plus tax & service fee. ABOUT THE BAND Under the direction of Juno award winning producer and musical director, Lance Anderson, the concert will feature the phenomenal singing and playing of Kitchener’s Matt Weidinger and soul and gospel sensation Quisha Wint, and Toronto’s sax legend Gene Hardy (Bourbon Tabernacle Choir). Ray Charles mixed the gospel of his youth with the blues of the clubs and invented ‘soul’ music. Taking the classic gospel song – ‘It Must Be Jesus’ he put new lyrics to it and the result was ‘I’ve Got a Woman’ and the birth of Soul. This show features all the hits like ‘What I’d Say’, ‘Unchain My Heart’, ‘Hit the Road Jack’, ‘Hallelujah, I Love Her So’, ‘The Nighttime is the Right Time’, ‘Let the Good Times Roll’ and more. Two hours of music that will soothe your soul and have you dancin’ in your seats. When you hear Quisha Wint sing ‘Georgia’ you will think you have died and gone to heaven. Anderson says: “It is a rare opportunity to be able to get together and play the wonderful book of Ray Charles songs. This small group format harkens back to Ray at his critical best; The Atlantic sessions, with just his piano, organ and a rhythm section. You will feel like you are back in the clubs on the chitlin circuit.” Also features the Hammond B3 organ and the incredible sax playing of Gene Hardy (Michael Buble, Bourbon Tabernacle Choir), not to mention Kevan Mckenzie (James Taylor, Anne Murray) on drums, one of Canada’s top recording musicians. This show will pick up your spirits and give you the lift that only the musical Genius of Ray Charles can provide. "Phenomenal!! It is one of the most entertaining shows I have ever seen. You absolutely must bring this show to Ottawa. You all appeared to be having a thoroughly enjoyable time on-stage and the crowd was into every note of it. What a day and what a way to end a weekend-long party for us." - J.K. Ottawa "Lance Anderson brought his ‘Genius+Soul Show' to the Mariposa Folk Festival .... Lance and his group had a full tent dancing and singing along. Those that were there consider the show the highlight of the weekend, those that missed Lance and group have resolved to see it when we bring them back." Hosted by Juno Award-winning songwriter Frank Fiction , Folk & Feelings is a small-venue concert that blends indie folk, lyrical storytelling, and just enough dry humour to keep it human. Fiction’s indie alt-folk work blends lyrical candour with a crooked smile, channelling Ben Folds, Rufus Wainwright, Andy Shauf, and John Prine. Expect unreleased originals, unexpected covers, and breathing room between chords. Joining him is rising Canadian artist Eric Brandon , who is fresh off a national tour with Owen Riegling. Brandon writes like he’s lived the fallout—grappling with pain, hope, and all the things we don’t say out loud. Held in the intimate, art-soaked caféscape of Crown & Press—co-founded by both Frank Fiction and celebrated Hamilton artist Julia Veenstra—this live acoustic concert offers just 80 seats and no place to hide. Join Natalie and Misty Doan for four fun-filled days of sewing, laughter, and love at a 2025 Doan Girls Retreat in Hamilton, Missouri (Quilt Town USA)!! This fantastic duo will inspire you by teaching you two projects as well as sharing stories about their lives, their family, and their sewing journey. Natalie and Misty are putting the final touches on what they are teaching soon, but rest assured, their projects are incredible and new for 2025. All the fabric you need to complete the two projects will be supplied to you in a kit at the retreat, so all you need to bring are your favorite sewing notions or supplies. You can either bring your own sewing machine or you can reserve one of ours online - the choice is yours! And don't forget, Missouri Star has 16 quilt shops in Hamilton, so if you forget something or just want to shop 'til you drop, we have you covered! While Natalie and Misty will keep you busy - please bring projects to work on. We love seeing what you are creating and we give you plenty of time for open sewing (the perfect chance to tackle that stack of UFOs)! And while not mandatory to participate, we always have our Show & Tell on Thursday evenings, so bring something that you want to share (or maybe you want to share something you made while at retreat). Show and Tell is always a highlight of the week for everyone - quilting can be so personal and the stories told always give us all the warm and fuzzies? So what can you expect during the Doan Girls Retreat (besides hours and hours of fellowship and sewing)? Sleeping Rooms - all rooms are upstairs and are shared - there are no private rooms available and a chair lift is available for assistance. There are two ADA rooms available upon request. Meals - Dinner will be served on Tuesday evening. A continental breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be served on Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday morning, enjoy a hot "farewell" breakfast before you check out and get on the road! Of course, for you early birds Monday evening, a continental breakfast will be served Tuesday morning. Snacks - We set out a snack table - because sewing definitely makes us all snack-y. We provide light snacks for the group but if there is something particular you crave, feel free to bring it. Sewing Table Seating - We do have assigned seating for the well-lit sewing tables (personal sewing lamps are optional). If you are traveling with a friend or friends and would like to sit together - no problem? Please just indicate this on your registration form with the names of the people you wish to sit by. We also provide cutting/ironing tables, and power strips. Sewing Machines - As we have said above, you are welcome to bring your own sewing machine (don't forget all your cords)!! But if you want to travel light, you can absolutely use one of our machines at a cost of $75 for the duration of the retreat. If you do need to reserve a machine, please indicate this on your registration form. We know things happen, but if for some reason you need to cancel after you have booked your reservation, please let us know as soon as possible. The retreat is only fully refundable 60 days in advance of the start date. In the event that you are past the 60-day notice and are unable to attend, you may transfer your reservation to someone else or move to another retreat within 12 months of your original retreat date. If you need to cancel, please email us at retreats@missouriquiltco.com or call us at (816) 265-1812. Information Source: Missouri Star Retreats & Events | eventbrite
