Werca's Folk: Coal and Choruses Werca's Folk, with their director, Sandra Kerr, are absolutely delighted to be presenting an evening of song celebrating the history of the coal industry in this region and beyond, with the emphasis on the experiences of the wives, mothers, sisters and daughters of miners. There will be readings from the people who supported the miners, including during the strike of '84/5. Take the opportunity to join in on the choruses of some of our other repertoire, which expresses the loves, lives, hopes and hardship of women through our region's traditional folk songs, and newly-penned pieces - many by the choir's director. Werca's Folk is a choir of women devoted to singing, and to each other , while their director, Sandra Kerr will be familiar to many of you as the composer of and musician for the much-loved music of the Bagpuss films. We do hope you can join us for an evening full of harmony, history and humour. Information Source: The Common Room | eventbrite

Arts Fine Art
Sharpen your drawings skills and understanding of the city in the second iteration of this special Masterclass series led by artist Mark Bletcher. Running across May and June 2025, the second iteration of the City Drawing Masterclass will take place en plein air . Under the expert guidance of artist Mark Bletcher we will head out into the urban landscape to explore and depict the modernist city. Bletcher will help you take advantage of a range of drawing techniques and processes to deepen your understanding and approach to observational drawing – learning how to add light, depth, and colour to our sketches. The course will be supported by a further guided tour and special access to our exhibition Brasília of the North , with unique insights from its curators providing context to the city you will be drawing. Refreshments and materials will be provided, and each participant will receive a sketchbook to continue their drawing practice beyond the course. This Masterclass series is suitable for all levels and is an excellent opportunity for those wanting to hone their craft or to try something new. 4 May – Week 1: Architecture In our first session we will begin with a curator-led tour of the exhibition Brasília of the North and discussion of the Concrete Dreams project of which it is part. From there, we will head over to the iconic Civic Centre as well as explore some of the notable modernist buildings on the Newcastle University campus. 18 May – Week 2: Infrastructure Infrastructure will be the focus of the second Masterclass as we take advantage of the Farrell Centre’s location in the city centre to depict some of the city’s striking carparks, elevated walkways and, of course, the concrete delights of the Central Motorway. 1 June – Week 3: Landscape Newcastle is unusual in having such a large expanse of landscape in the shape of the Town Moor so near the city centre. Yet this too bears the imprint of the city’s modernist moment, with two hills created from the spoils from excavating the Central Motorway. In this session, we explore how to depict the city’s ‘modernist greenery’. 15 June – Week 4: Develop In our final session we develop our sketches from the first three sessions in the studio setting of the Farrell Centre and reflect on our portfolios of drawings. Booking The cost for the course is £80. These masterclasses are design to be informal spaces to share ideas, chat and ask questions. If you have any questions about the course please get in touch. Please note, you must be able to attend all 4 sessions as refunds cannot be issued. Information Source: Farrell Centre | eventbrite

Set in the surroundings of our 13th-century medieval friary, this is the ultimate way to kick back, relax and enjoy some of the best local brews. Join us in our Cloister Garden, complete with heated parasols, fire pits, festoon lighting, lush greenery, rustic stone and wood features. After the Dissolution, when the friary was abandoned, the Brewers & Bakers Guild held their quarterly meetings in the Chapter House. Today, we continue this rich history—brewing our own ale alongside our daily bread. Enjoy Blackfriars Street Food straight from the BBQ, sip on wine, cocktails and soft drinks from our classic bar, soak in the festival vibes with live music on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and bring your furry friends because our Cloister Garden is dog-friendly! Join us to celebrate the launch of Ilisha Thiru Purcell’s debut pamphlet, What She Said, with readings from Shash Trevett and Mymona Bibi. There will also be a Q&A with Ilisha hosted by Mymona. The event will be held in Stage 3 of Northern Stage. Ilisha Thiru Purcell’s debut pamphlet asks the question of how a body, be it human, water, land, or animal, can contain and live through what has happened to it. ‘In her stunning debut pamphlet, Ilisha Thiru Purcell reworks and revivifies the millennia old Tamil poetic practice of Thinnai – the poetics of a codified landscape – transplanting it to her home environment in the North East of England. Her perfectly crafted, almost elegiac poems root trauma and recovery deeply within a landscape which acts not just as witness, but also as a canvas. For me, reading What She Said felt like coming home: not to a home I once abandoned, but to the comforting presence of the old within the new. An exciting fresh voice which plays with form and metaphor with breath taking skill, this is diasporan poetics at its best.’ – Shash Trevett; The Naming of Names (Smith|Doorstop 2024) and co-editor of Out of Sri Lanka (Bloodaxe 2023) Copies of the book will be available to purchase at the event and there will be a book signing after the Q&A. Content information: please note that themes of sexual violence will be discussed during the event. Age 16+ recommended. Access information: There is step-free access to Stage 3. The theatre has three lifts providing access to all parts of the building, including the accessible toilets, baby changing facilities, and stage 3. Wheelchair accessible spaces are available and can be reserved. https://northernstage.co.uk/your-visit/access/ About the speakers: Ilisha Thiru Purcell is an award-winning Sri Lankan-Scottish poet from Newcastle upon Tyne. Ilisha was a Poet in Residence at the 2025 StAnza Poetry Festival, winning the Futurist Award. She has been shortlisted for the James Berry Prize and Nine Arches’ Primers. Her work has appeared in publications such as Bi+ Lines Anthology, Butcher’s Dog, and Third Space Anthology. What She Said is Ilisha’s debut poetry pamphlet and was published by Verve Poetry Press in April 2025. @ilishadoespoetry Shash Trevett is a poet, critic and a translator of Tamil poetry into English. Born in Sri Lanka, she now lives in the U.K. Her poetry has been widely published in journals and anthologies, she has read variously across the U.K and internationally and is a winner of a Northern Writers’ Award. Out of Sri Lanka: Tamil, Sinhala and English Poetry from Sri Lanka and its Diasporas (Bloodaxe 2023, Penguin India 2023) which she co-edited with Vidyan Ravinthiran and Seni Seneviratne, was one of the Times Literary Supplement’s Books of the Year for 2023.
