Graeme Hawley | The Joy of Spines
Graeme Hawley is the Head of Published Collections at the National Library of Scotland, where he has worked since 2002. He is responsible for all of the Library’s published collections from the Gutenberg Bible onwards. He is also a published and performance poet and in 2008 he won the inaugural Scottish Poetry Slam Championship at the Aye Write Festival, and was on the winning team for Scotland at the Three Nations Slam at the Bristol Old Vic.
In August 2016 he performed his 4 star show “The Joy of Spines” at the Edinburgh Fringe, which he has now performed dozens of times to over 3,500 people, mostly in Scotland but also as far as London and Oslo, and at the Lit & Phil back in 2022. This slideshow of hundreds of book spines doesn’t only reveal the broad and deep collecting practices of the National Library of Scotland, but tells the story of who we are, as a species. Uplifting, thought-provoking, occasionally educational, and surprisingly moving, it’s an event that everyone can enjoy.
