Handwriting the Constitution is a social art project begun in 2017 by artist Morgan O'Hara . It invites people from all walks of life to meet in public spaces to handwrite the US Constitution or other documents written to protect human rights and freedoms. This art practice was created so that people will know their rights, deepen their understanding of laws created to protect these rights, and to help resist negative thinking. To date approximately 2000 people have participated, both nationally and internationally. The goal of this art practice is to encourage people to hold their own Handwriting sessions on a recurring basis; to create a physical and psychological space that explores the practice of concentrated writing as an art form, and a process designed to bring people together in a quiet and calming way, all by focusing on human rights. It has been identified as a powerful and transformative form of activism for introverts. Participants are welcome to work on their own journey through the U.S. Constitution, but are welcome to explore other documents of freedom such as the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights. We will have copies of both documents available for reference. Dean's Lectures Series - Heal the World Auburn's dean's lectures are rooted in a long tradition of hosting religious, faith, cultural, and intellectual leaders going back several decades. The conversations are meant to inspire and connect leaders to issues of healing and repair. From healing in the aftermath of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda to healing in the aftermath of Indian Boarding Schools in the US and Canada, Auburn has sought peacemakers and storytellers who are focused on healing and reconciliation that are closest to these issues. Auburn is proud to have Julian Brave NoiseCat to talk with leaders about his approach to healing. Most recently, his work Sugarcane, directed alongside Emily Kassie, follows the abuse and missing children at the Indian residential school NoiseCat's family were sent to in British Columbia. NoiseCat's first book, We Survived the Night (Penguin Random House Canada), will be out October 2025. The event will also feature We look foward to welcoming you to Auburn's Dean's lectures. About Julian Brave NoiseCat Julian Brave NoiseCat is a writer, Oscar-nominated filmmaker, champion powwow dancer and student of Salish art and history. His first documentary, Sugarcane , directed alongside Emily Kassie, follows an investigation into abuse and missing children at the Indian residential school NoiseCat’s family was sent to near Williams Lake, British Columbia. (But it’s really a reverse Western buddy stoner roadtrip tragicomedy.) Sugarcane premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival where NoiseCat and Kassie won the Directing Award in the U.S. Documentary Competition. The film was recognized with dozens of awards including Best Documentary from the National Board of Review and was nominated for an Academy Award. Sugarcane screened at film festivals around the world and in theaters across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The film is distributed by National Geographic and can be streamed on Hulu and in over 150 markets on Disney+. NoiseCat’s first book, We Survived the Night , will be published by Alfred A. Knopf on October 21, 2025 as well as by Penguin Random House Canada, Profile Books in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth, Albin Michel in France and Aufbau Verlag in Germany. NoiseCat’s journalism has appeared in dozens of publications including The New York Times , The Washington Post and The New Yorker and has been recognized with many awards including the 2022 American Mosaic Journalism Prize, which honors "excellence in long-form, narrative or deep reporting on stories about underrepresented and/or misrepresented groups in the present American landscape." In 2021, NoiseCat was named to the TIME100 Next list of emerging leaders alongside the starting point guard of his fantasy basketball team, Luka Doncic. Before turning full-time to writing and filmmaking, NoiseCat was a political strategist, policy analyst and cultural organizer. In 2019, he helped lead a grassroots effort to bring an Indigenous canoe journey to San Francisco Bay to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Alcatraz Occupation . Eighteen canoes representing communities from as far north as Canada and as far west as Hawaii participated in the journey, which was covered by dozens of local and national media outlets, including The New York Times . In 2020, he was the first to publicly suggest that Deb Haaland should be appointed Interior Secretary. Working with leaders from Indian Country as well as the progressive and environmental movements, NoiseCat helped turn the idea into a sophisticated inside-outside campaign that drew support from celebrities, activists and even a few conservative politicians. When Haaland was sworn in she became the first Native American cabinet secretary in United States history. Raised in a single-mother household in Oakland, California, Julian is a proud member of the Canim Lake Band Tsq'escen and a descendant of the Lil'Wat Nation of Mount Currie. He has played hockey for three of the oldest teams in the game: Columbia University, the Oxford University Blues and the Alkali Lake Braves. A champion traditional dancer, his powwow prize winnings include a horse. About Auburn Auburn is a ten-generation theological seminary that indentifies and equips leaders - from the pulpit to the public square - to build community, bridge divides, pursue justice, and heal the world. We do this through three strategies: faithful leadership development, storytelling and narrative change, and research in theological education and formation. Learn more at auburnseminary.org. From Melissa Febos, the national bestselling author of Girlhood, comes an examination of the solitude, freedoms, and feminist heroes she discovered during a year of celibacy and a wise and transformative look at relationships and self-knowledge. In the wake of a catastrophic two-year relationship, Melissa Febos decided to take a break: For three months she would abstain from dating, relationships, and sex. Her friends were amused. Did she really think three months was a long time? But to Febos, it was. Ever since her teens, she had been in one relationship after another. As she puts it, she could trace a “daisy chain of romances” from her adolescence to her midthirties. Finally, she would carve out time to focus on herself and examine the patterns that had produced her midlife disaster. Over those first few months, she gleaned insights into her past and awoke to the joys of being single. She decided to extend her celibacy, not knowing it would become the most fulfilling and sensual year of her life. No longer defined by her romantic pursuits, she learned to relish the delights of solitude, the thrill of living on her own terms, the distinct pleasures unmediated by lovers, and the freedom to pursue her ideals without distraction or guilt. Bringing her own experiences into conversation with those of women throughout history—from eleventh-century mystic Hildegard von Bingen, Virginia Woolf, and Octavia Butler to the Shakers and Sappho—Febos situates her story within a newfound lineage of role models who unapologetically pursued their ambitions and ideals. By abstaining from all forms of romantic entanglement, Febos began to see her life and her self-worth in a radical, new way. Her year of divestment transformed her relationships with friends and peers, her spirituality, her creative practice, and, most of all, her relationship to herself. Blending intimate personal narrative and incisive cultural criticism, The Dry Season tells a story that’s as much about celibacy as its inverse: pleasure, desire, fulfillment. Infused with fearless honesty and keen intellect, it’s the memoir of a woman learning to live at the center of her own story, and a much-needed catalyst for a new conversation around sex and love. Melissa Febos is the national bestselling author of four books, including Girlhood —which won the National Book Critics Circle Award in Criticism, and Body Work: The Radical Power of Personal Narrative . She has been awarded prizes and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, LAMBDA Literary, the National Endowment for the Arts, the British Library, the Black Mountain Institute, the Bogliasco Foundation, and others. Her work has appeared in The Paris Review, The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The Best American Essays, Vogue, The Sewanee Review, New York Review of Books, and elsewhere. Febos is a full professor at the University of Iowa and lives in Iowa City with her wife, the poet Donika Kelly. Leslie Jamison is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Splinters , The Recovering , and The Empathy Exams ; as well as the essay collection Make It Scream , Make It Burn , a finalist for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award, and the novel The Gin Closet , a finalist for the LA Times Book Prize . She writes regularly for The New Yorker and her work has appeared in many publications including The New York Times, the Virginia Quarterly Review , and the New York Review of Books . She teaches at Columbia University and lives in Brooklyn. Information Source: Books Are Magic | eventbrite
