Gasper Nali is a not-so-traditional babatoni player from the small town of Nkhata Bay on the shores of Lake Malawi. The babatoni is an African one-string home-made 3-metre long bass guitar, and with a stick and an empty beer bottle, together with a cow skin kick drum and catchy melodies, he creates the most amazing and danceable original Afro Beats possible! Gasper’s unique style of Kwela music has received an extraordinary amount of online attention after a video of him playing by the lake shore went viral with over 20 million views. He has been featured by CNN and in the documentary ‘Deep Roots Malawi’, jammed with Joss Stone, appeared on Wired for Sound – Malawi, remixed by Aroop Roy for Sol Power Sounds and been played by Iggy Pop on BBC 6! His debut album, Abale Ndikuwuzeni, roughly translates to ‘People, I want to tell you’. It is a fitting title as Gasper’s songs, all sung in the Malawi national language of Chichewa, talk about life and strife in the country, often including social issues such as the rich and the poor, child marriages etc. Gasper has toured the UK and Europe several times since his breakthrough video, playing in all environments from seated arts centres spaces to major festival stages. This year, Gasper will be transforming his customary one-man-band show and perform with a 3-piece band for the very first time in the UK. Along for the ride is Malawi born songsmith and cultural proponent Luhangah on additional vocals and percussion, as well as Gasper’s long-time producer and collaborator Mattias Stålnacke on guitars.  Gasper will also release his new record “Chule Chule Iwe” to coincide with a UK tour in May/June of 2025. “His music is simple but joyous, and totally infectious” – Songlines Magazine “His songs are moving to hear and a spectacle to watch” – Simon Broughton, Evening Standard Information Source: elysium gallery | eventbrite

Cheap Dirty Horse Cheap Dirty Horse are a big rowdy queer trash folk-punk six-piece band from Nottingham. Since starting as a busking project in the summer of 2022, the band have continued growing in every sense, from a two-piece to a six-piece, from playing in the streets to playing in grass roots venues up and down the country, and from crappy phone recordings to the dropping of their first five singles. are a big rowdy queer trash folk-punk six-piece band from Nottingham. Since starting as a busking project in the summer of 2022, the band have continued growing in every sense, from a two-piece to a six-piece, from playing in the streets to playing in grass roots venues up and down the country, and from crappy phone recordings to the dropping of their first five singles. After gaining a little bit of local attention, things really kicked off for the band after their song 'On The Rob' exploded on tiktok, gaining a collective 1 million views across three videos of which two have sadly now been taken down. Since then, they've been playing shows pretty much consistently. From Nottingham’s finest grassroots venues, to trans rights and trade union protests, to house shows and the series of the new outdoor DIY punk gig scene that they’ve found themselves in the centre of. 2024 was an exciting year for the band as they supported folk-punk legends, Apes of the State, on their first UK tour, played at the first annual Nottinghamshire Trans Pride, and headed all over the country for their own first headline tour which included both Nottinghamshire Pride and Brighton Pride. Myles Bullen Myles Bullen is a genre- fluid, art-poet, ukulele-playing punk rapper, from Portland, Maine. Myles has toured nearly every state in the US as well as many European countries performing packed shows at music venues, colleges, recovery centers, prisons, festivals, and libraries. As a person in long term recovery from addiction, Myles sings and screams songs about grief, mental health, addiction, navigating identity, relationships, and cartoon lore. They released their most recent album, timetokill, on indie record label, Fake Four Inc. They love doing shows and their dog Finn. Myles has played shows w/ Sage Francis, Kimya Dawson, Codefendants, and Apes of the State. Efa Supertramp Efa Supertramp is a Welsh folk-punk grrrl who comes armed with an acoustic guitar and a powerful voice. Efa’s songs are angry but uplifting; railing against money, power and greed whilst having a zest for life and freedom. Her anger at an unjust world is combined with constructive solutions and hope for a better future. Efa deftly combines elements of her influences to pay tribute to those who fought for equality in previous generations – showing that protest music is far from dead. Cosmo Cosmo is “a one-man folk-punk phenomenon.” (Miniature Music Press). Over the course of 14 albums and 30 years of touring, he has established himself as a formidable voice on the UK and international underground. He has appeared at Glastonbury, the Edinburgh Fringe and other major UK festivals, as well as touring across the UK, Europe, North and South America and the Middle East. In that time, he has shared stages with Billy Bragg, Frank Turner, Grace Petrie, John Cooper Clarke, Mark Thomas and more. Cosmo has won awards at the Edinburgh fringe and Hay fringe festivals. An activist as well as a musician, Cosmo has also performed at countless picket lines, protest camps, rallies and demos, as well as being involved with community organising. EDINBURGH FRINGE REVIEW – “A folksinger for our times with a veritable hive of bees in his bonnet.” GUARDIAN (Pick of the Week) – “George Formby-style rants against the far-right and other musical hectoring.” OUTSIDELEFT.COM – “He does bite, but only if you ask nicely.” OXFRINGE REVIEW – “Fast fingers… quick lips… ruthless humour.” Information Source: elysium gallery | eventbrite

Cultural Experiences
In Afonydd: Poems for Welsh Rivers/Cerddi Afonydd Cymru , 50 poets explore what the rivers of Wales mean to them, in a fully bilingual poetry anthology, with each poem printed side by side in both Welsh and English. We are very excited to be welcoming several of the contributors to the shop, who will be discussing the anthology, and reading their poems! These are not generic river poems, but specific poems about particular rivers, from the unnamed to the magnificent and the infamous – washing up against the rural, the urban, the industrial and the unspoiled. The poems sweep us along, on a journey through memory, language, loneliness and desire. Here are poems about the murky waters of love, toads from River Llyfni, swimming at the Dwyfor and disappearing brooks. With contributions from some well-known Welsh writers, as well as new poets, the book represents a brilliant cross-section of some of Wales' most exciting poets.
