HEALTH & SAFETY: WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE WEAR A FACE MASK WHILE INDOORS FOR OUR EVENTS. THANK YOU. When was the last time you spent an hour without glancing at your phone or your tablet? Chris Hayes, one of our favorite thinkers on MSNBC, tells us we all suffer from a social disease that's wearing us down at this very second. If you can get through the next few sentences without checking your devices for the constant onslaught of incoming messages, you may not have as serious a case of attention deficit disorder (not the actual medical syndrome, but a corrosive social syndrome) as someone across the table from you. In his new book, The Sirens' Call, Chris takes us deep into the competition for our attention. The competition is profound, and the consequences on all sides are equally profound: for us as individuals, and for those who want us to notice that outreach, be aware of the messaging-- 24/7. The personal price we pay for the incoming onslaught is considerable, as is the commercial price. Mandatory reading for anyone with a mobile phone, a tablet, or a computer. That means you. HEALTH & SAFETY: WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE WEAR A FACE MASK WHILE INDOORS FOR OUR EVENTS. THANK YOU. We love Maureen Dowd’s weekly takedowns and roundups of the personalities who have defined the news cycle. We have loved her as a political commentator, a cultural observer, and more important, as a social critic of our time. She’s not just about politics. Her new book Notorious features some of her great interviews with those who not only define the news, but visionaries who have created our American cultural identity. They’re chatty, funny, and of course deeply absorbing profiles of our most, well, notorious legends, moguls, tech titans, and creatives. What a range: Paul Newman; Idris Elba; Tina Fey; Elon Musk; Jane Fonda; Larry David; Mel Brooks. Let politics go for an evening and enjoy one of America’s great journalists as she explores touchstones in our culture, who have become some of the most notorious individuals in the world. In conversation with Todd Purdum. Todd Purdum has covered numerous beats for the New York Times, including the White House. He is a senior writer at Politico, a contributing editor covering politics at Vanity Fair, and was until recently a staff writer at The Atlantic. He’s also an author, and teaches journalism at USC’s Annenberg School for Communications and Journalism. His new book, Desi Arnaz: The Man Who Invented Television, will be released in June. HEALTH & SAFETY: WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE WEAR A FACE MASK WHILE INDOORS FOR OUR EVENTS. THANK YOU. Who among us doesn't love Vanity Fair? And if you do, it's because of visionary editor Graydon Carter. For 25 years, Graydon Carter in no small way helped to define-- and create-- contemporary pop culture, both here and in Europe. While Carter's resumé includes dazzling entries (including co-founding the defiantly satirical and hilarious Spy Magazine), it was Vanity Fair that catapulted Carter into the imagination of mainstream America and Europe. He molded Vanity Fair into a magazine that cheerfully embraced the highs and lows of American arts, culture, politics and commerce through features and photography by wonderful writers and great photojournalists. In his new book, When the Going Was Good: An Editor's Adventures During the Last Golden Age of Magazines, we see Carter's profound influence on American lifestyle and culture. While no longer steering Vanity Fair, he is now the co-founder of the indispensable digital magazine, Air Mail. Graydon Carter's inestimable impact cannot be understated: we see it not only in the glamour of the entertainment industry, but more important, in magazine journalism, just brimming with features and photography that have been so fundamental to our culture. When the Going Was Good spills over with great stories featuring outsize personalities. Graydon Carter cultivated wonderful writers, artists, and photographers when he ran Spy and Vanity Fair. And his own story is as captivating as any that appeared under his watch. Monica Lewinsky is the creator and host of the upcoming podcast, Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky. She has appeared in Vanity Fair many times, both as a subject and as a writer. Her name was once synonymous with presidential scandal, but Monica Lewinsky has reshaped her identity as she embraces activism in various areas, including in justice for women, cyberbullying, voter turnout, and more. She is a television producer (Impeachment: American Crime Story on FX; 15 Minutes of Shame on HBO; and the upcoming Hulu series on Amanda Knox) and crusader against bullying in any form. HEALTH & SAFETY: WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE WEAR A FACE MASK WHILE INDOORS FOR OUR EVENTS. THANK YOU. New York Times columnist and podcast host Ezra Klein and Atlantic journalist and podcast host Derek Thompson are energizing, and generate hope. Especially when they're talking about a serious social mess or yet another political crisis. Problems problems problems. But problems can create opportunity. The extraordinary journalists Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson examine a slew of social problems in their new book, Abundance-- problems that were actually created by solutions dreamed up decades ago by sometimes well-meaning legislation. Solutions that might have seemed perfectly sensible a generation or two ago have actually been force multipliers for problems we're looking at right now. Take housing shortages. The housing crisis strangling cities across the country are the result of density zoning laws that decades ago made sense. Los Angeles, for example, enacted strict anti-density regulations, and we fought long and hard against looking like New York. The result is a staggering and catastrophic lack of housing-- affordable and not so affordable. But don't despair. Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson find hope and promise for us in Abundance, suggesting that we need to reframe our thinking, and that it's possible in a host of sectors, to protect and at the same time, to improve and expand. Ezra Klein is a columnist for the New York Times, and he hosts the terrific twice-weekly podcast, The Ezra Klein Show, which you can listen to or watch on Tuesdays and Fridays on nytimes.com. He tackles social and political issues with experts who provide clarity when and where you didn't think clarity could be found. Derek Thompson is a regular contributor to The Atlantic, and writes on tech, culture, and politics. He is the host of Plain English, a podcast in which he navigates issues in the news and breaks it down into plain English. Crooked Media’s Jon Favreau and Ezra Klein talk about political problems, challenges, and possible solutions, a lot. They mull opportunities within those problems they explore. Favreau was President Obama’s speechwriter for four years, after having worked on Obama’s first presidential campaign in that capacity. When Trump was elected, Favreau and fellow Obama White House colleagues Tommy Vietor, Jon Lovett and Dan Pfeiffer launched their landmark podcast, Pod Save America, and the enormously influential media company Crooked Media. Favreau also hosts Offline with Jon Favreau, as well as The Wilderness. The Crooked guys’ first book, Democracy or Else, will be published in late June 2025. And his own story is as captivating as any that appeared under his watch. Moderator to be announced. Did you know that you can make a fully tax-deductible donation? An intimate and revelatory biography of Yoko Ono from the #1New York Timesbestselling author ofBeautiful Boy. John Lennon once described Yoko Ono as the world’s most famous unknown artist. “Everybody knows her name, but no one knows what she does.” She has only been important to history insofar as she impacted Lennon. Throughout her life, Yoko has been a caricature, curiosity, and, often, a villain—an inscrutable seductress, manipulating con artist, and caterwauling fraud. The Lennon/Beatles saga is one of the greatest stories ever told, but Yoko’s part has been missing—hidden in the Beatles’ formidable shadow, further obscured by flagrant misogyny and racism. This definitive biography of Yoko Ono’s life will change that. In this book, Yoko Ono takes centerstage. Yoko’s life, independent of Lennon, was an amazing journey. Yoko spans from her birth to wealthy parents in pre-war Tokyo, her harrowing experience as a child during the war, her arrival in avant-garde art scene in London, Tokyo, and New York City. It delves into her groundbreaking art, music, feminism, and activism. We see how she coped under the most intense, relentless, and cynical microscope as she was falsely vilified for the most heinous cultural crime imaginable: breaking up the greatest rock-and-roll band in history. This book was nearly a half century in the making. In 1980, David Sheff met Yoko and John when Sheff conducted an in-depth interview with them just months before John’s murder. In the aftermath of the killing, he and Yoko became close as she rebuilt her life, survived threats and betrayals, and went on to create groundbreaking art and music while campaigning for peace and other causes. Drawing from his experiences and interviews with her, her family, closest friends, collaborators, and many others, Sheff shows us Yoko’s nine decades—one of the most unlikely and remarkable lives ever lived. Yoko is a harrowing, moving, propulsive, and vastly entertaining biography of a woman whose story has never been accurately told. The book not only rehabilitates Yoko Ono’s reputation but elevates it to iconic status. Information Source: Book Soup | eventbrite
