May 30, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Falkirk
Cultural Experiences
Wildflower ID This workshop is suitable for anyone who can tell a buttercup from a daisy. After being introduced to some basic terms and concepts, participants will be shown how they can place a given plant into its correct family. Only then will they try to identify it as a particular species. You will be given advice on how to choose and use a field guide, and how to follow simple keys. All the work will be hands-on, with fresh material indoors and growing plants outdoors, throughout the day. Participants will receive a copy of Faith's Wildflower Families guide book (rrp £6.99) to take home. Instructor - Faith Anstey has been running workshops for the BSBI for seven years in plant ID for beginners and improvers. In connection with these, she has produced several small books on plant families, grasses, sedges etc. These can be used with the appropriate field guide to make the identification of common species quicker and easier than by traditional methods. What to bring - Notepad & pen & camera. If you have your own hand lens & guide books then bring them along. We recommend the Collins Wildflower Guide or The Wild Flower Key by Francis Rose. Please bring a packed lunch, tea/coffee will be available. We will be outside for parts of the day so please check the weather forecast and come prepared. We will be using the wildlife garden at Jupiter which has long grass and uneven grounds so we'd recommend you wear long trousers and sensible footwear. .
