Join The Writers Workshop for its monthly live literature event downstairs at Sheffield Plate. Each month we invite a published author to share their work and insight into their writing journey, and then we open the floor to emerging writers in our open-mic segment. Your work doesn't have to be polished ... it just needs to sound about right! The event begins at 6:45PM, but join members of the Workshop upstairs from 6:15PM for some mixing before the event. After hosting a series of novelists to start of the year, we're excited to be welcome our first poet of the year, Ian Parks! We've seen him described as the 'finest love poet of his generation', so we can't wait to hear from him! Ian will bring us a poet's perspective on the writer's journey - talking us through his inspirations, challenges and sharing some of his poetry as well. Ian Parks is a poet and academic. He is the editor of Versions of the North: Contemporary Yorkshire Poetry and his Selected Poems 1983-2023 was pyblished by Calder Valley Poetry last year. His translations of the modern Greek poet Constantine Cavafy were a Poetry Book Society Choice. He is a founding member of the Ted Hughes Poetry Festival and runs the Read to Write Project in Doncaster. Get Writing is the longest standing group at the Writers Workshop. Every Wednesday there’s a theme and a focus but where you go with it is up to you. No formal instruction, just gentle, playful prompts to bring out your own voice and style in the company of people who love writing and where it takes them. You can write in whatever genre and for whatever purpose suits you. Expect friendship and solidarity as side effects. - Previously run by the founder Beverley Ward and currently facilitated by her mentee and apprentice associate Coco Lone Neal whilst she is on sabbatical. We’re Floating Art, a small arts business based in the North. We’ve been teaching people how to paint here for over 7 years now. At our workshops you’ll be taught by a practicing artist Ula Fung and helped along by her partner Ryan. We specialise in workshops that combine both fun & learning and believe you can never forget the learning! Our Japanese Painting Workshop is our flagship workshop. A workshop for both art lovers and Japan Lovers! We’ll teach you some basics of the Japanese Painting style known as Nihonga (日本画) and teach you how to paint using traditional materials that includes bamboo brushes, sumi ink, Gansai Tambi 顔彩耽美 (Traditional Japanese colours), gold leaves on rice paper. The seasons are a big part of Japanese culture and for that reason we keep the themes and topics of our workshops seasonal. For this workshop we’ll be covering the topic of Cherry Blossom and you’ll learn all the painting techniques you need to paint Cherry Blossom. We’ll bring a large selection of topical references from a wide range of Japanese Artists, both classic and contemporary. Our Workshops are not about copying what’s in front of you but designing and making something of your own. You’ll learn all you need to know about how to do that in the session. Most of our students haven’t painted in a long time. This painting class is suitable for beginners as well as those with a little more artistic experience, so don't worry if it's your first time. Your teacher will be on hand to provide guidance and answer any questions. We just ask that you treat Ula with respect by listening to her demonstration as well as her advice. At the end of your art class, you'll get the chance to stand back and admire your beautiful Japanese painting. You'll head home with your piece and a new skill that's perfect to practice whenever you're looking to clear your head. Make a day of it! This workshop is located at the Cambridge Street Collective Food hall in Sheffield. Food & Drink will be available to purchase from their wide selection of vendors and you can choose to have these either before, during or after the workshop. Why not make a day of it? A perfect Sunday. *Towards the end of the workshop there will be an opportunity for you to get your photo taken. We will use these photos for social media and promotional use.
