Andy White - Edinburgh - UK Tour 2025 Date: TBA Location: Leith Depot 40 years after the release of debut EP Religious Persuasion , Irish songwriter Andy White is back home living in Belfast and tours the UK and Ireland May–June 2025 in support of new live album The night is approaching though some would say it was morning (Floating World Records). The tour starts at the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival in his hometown and finishes at Glastonbury, where old chum Billy Bragg has invited Andy to appear on the Left Field stage. The double-CD set has both evening and afternoon sessions, one on each disc. The vinyl LP has the evening session and a download code for both sessions. The live show will feature songs from throughout Andy’s songwriting career from ‘Religious Persuasion’ and ‘James Joyce’s Grave’ to ‘Italian Girls on Mopeds’ and ‘Good Luck I Hope You Make It’. The Belfast troubadour has come home. The story of the live album begins with the friendship between Andy and producer John Leckie ( The Bends , Muse, Roy Harper, Baba Maal). The two met during one of Peter Gabriel’s recording weeks at Real World Studios and immediately hit it off, with John mixing and producing many of Andy’s recordings (including the recent AT album with Tim Finn). After one of Andy’s concerts, John told him he wanted to buy an album of what he had just heard. A solo album recorded live. No band. No overdubs. “Where are we going to record it?” “The best-sounding room in the world – Studio Two at Abbey Road.” On July 14, 2023, Andy and John met at Abbey Road. John got his first job there in 1970. His interview was the day the Beatles crossed the road for a photo. Andy had listened to albums recorded there and looked at photos taken there since Revolver played at primary school parties. Giles Martin was driving out as they drove in. Andy brought three guitars and an amp. John organised everything and when he took Andy down the stairs into Studio Two, told him to stop and smell the room. Nothing had changed since those great records had been recorded. You could feel it in the equipment, the fabric, the floorboards. John had asked Andy to write his best set list. In the afternoon they recorded the first half, in the evening a small group of friends and family arrived, and they recorded the second. You can see what it looked like on the album sleeve, you can hear the room on the record. Everyone went to the café afterwards and sat drinking and talking under the photos of Peter Sellers and Sophia Loren, Cilla and the Beatles. Andy said goodbye and walked across the crossing on the way to the hire car. It was done. Information Source: Ear Candy | eventbrite

Surgeons' Hall Museums are delighted to welcome Ambrose Parry for the launch of their new book 'The Death of Shame'. Join us in conversation with Chris Brookmyer and Marisa Haetzman as we get under the skin of their new book 'The Death of Shame'. Ambrose Parry is a pseudonym for a collaboration between Chris Brookmyre and Marisa Haetzman. The couple are married and live in Scotland. Chris Brookmyre is an international bestselling and multi-award-winning author. The Death of Shame marks his 30th published novel. Dr Marisa Haetzman is a consultant anaesthetist of twenty years’ experience, whose research for her Master’s in the History of Medicine uncovered the material upon which their novels are based. The Death of Shame- 1854, Edinburgh. Respectable faces hide private sins. Apprentice Sarah Fisher is helping to fund Dr Will Raven’s emerging medical practice in exchange for being secretly trained as a medic. Sarah needs no instruction in the inequalities that beset her gender, but even she has her eyes opened to a darker reality when a relative seeks her help in searching for her missing daughter. Annabel Banks was promised a situation in a prestigious household, but there has been no word from her since she left home and the agency that arranged her position says she never appeared. Sarah’s inquiries lead her to reforming campaigners trying to publicise the plight of the hundreds of girls ensnared in Edinburgh’s houses of assignation. Sarah learns how young women are lured, deceived, trafficked and raped, leaving them ruined in the eyes of a society obsessed with moral purity, and where virginity is prized as a lucrative commodity. The Ambrose Parry books are all inspired by the fascinating facts former consultant anaesthetist Haetzman uncovered through her master’s degree in the history of medicine in 2014. There will be the opportunity to purchase a copy of the book and have it signed by the authors. Doors open 18:00 Duration: 60mins (approx.) Join Sue Lawrence on Thursday 5th June, at 7pm as she chats to Flora Johnston about her deeply moving tale of the sisterhood, heartbreak and resilience of the Scottish women on the World War II home front, Whispers in the Glen. Clova, Scotland, 1942. The midst of the Second World War. Sisters Nell and Effie Anderson live together in the Old Schoolhouse. Effie is a teacher, while Nell works as a postwoman, delivering news – often of the worst – from the frontline to her neighbours. Though they love and care for one another, there are unspoken tensions and mysteries that put distance between them. Then, a plane carrying Canadian and British soldiers crashes over their village, and the only surviving soldier stumbles up to their front door. In his pocket is a photo that will set in motion a chain of events threatening to uncover their families’ generations-old secrets. About the eventThis free, half-day symposium grows out of the ‘Nurture through Nature with Children’s Books’ exhibition, created by Edinburgh’s Museum of Childhood (Museums & Galleries Edinburgh) in partnership with SELCIE at the University of Edinburgh. This event explores the connection between children’s books, nature, and well-being, exploring how literature can nurture young readers’ creativity and learning, wonder and curiosity, all in relation to the natural world. Reflecting the different yet intertwined threads of the exhibition, this symposium is designed to appeal to scholars of Scottish and children’s literature, literature and environmental humanities, as well as a general public audience interested in the city’s cultural and green heritage. The keynote lecture by the architectural historian, Dr Elizabeth Darling, places the early 20th century Edinburgh kindergarten movement (founded by women) at the heart of the symposium’s exploration of the relationship between care, culture, and female agency in late 19th and early 20th century Scotland. Talks in the first half of the afternoon are dedicated to the kindergarten movement and women’s pioneering role in social reform, education, and child welfare through the use of green space, and the inheritance of Froebelian principles that championed the idea of learning through nature. The second half of the afternoon widens the focus to explore the theme of nature-nurture in Scottish literature, with talks on nature writing for children, and on the idea and practice of care in women’s writing of the period. There will also be an introduction to the ‘Nurture through Nature with Children’s Books’ exhibition, and the children’s book collection of Edinburgh’s Museum of Childhood which inspired it. The speakers featured at this event will be: Elizabeth Darling (Freelance Architectural Historian)Jane Whinnett (Froebel Trust)Lyn Stevens (Edinburgh Museum of Childhood)Lois Burke (Tilburg University)Ainsley MacIntosh (Glasgow University) Information Source: School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures | eventbrite
