Collaboration(s)! A Journey with John Jennings | Comic-Con Museum
Jul 1, 2024–Jun 11, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Diego
Jennings is a consummate collaborator; he shares ideas, inspiration, and control with an array of co-creators. Jennings has no qualms with the creative process and instead revels in the results. His work is a testimony to the power of community and an example of what can be gained when we eschew the trappings of the individual for the creative diversity of the group.
This exhibition explores Jennings’s own work as a comics artist and designer, showing a richness that can only be obtained by mixing skills, ideas, and passion for a unified story. Because of this ideology, Jennings has helped make thousands of images that have been in art shows, publications, and public forums across the world. He has created a style that supports his ideas around collaboration but also a style of collaboration itself. This exhibition stands not only as a testimony to this philosophy but a celebration of the power of reaching out to others and the beauty you can create when you do.
Becoming Betty Boop | Comic-Con Museum
Jul 1, 2024–Jun 12, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Diego
Betty Boop has been a cultural icon for nearly 100 years. In collaboration with Fleischer Studios, this one-of-a-kind exhibit embarks on a nostalgic journey, starting with Betty’s beginnings to her rise to international popularity—and what makes her a fan favorite today.
First introduced in 1930, Betty Boop was created by Max Fleischer for his “Talkartoons” series, the world’s first animated “talkies,” which Max’s company, Fleischer Studios, produced for Paramount Studios. While she first appeared in the animated film Dizzy Dishes as a dog-like singer, she quickly lost her canine features and was given the name Betty Boop in 1931, making her the first female animated screen star in history. Personifying the fabulous flappers and jazz artists of the day, she was also the earliest animated character to be on broadcast television, drawn live on-air by creator Max Fleischer.
Also highlighted are the eight women who have voiced Betty over the years, and history and animation enthusiasts will appreciate the focus on innovative industry pioneers Max and Dave Fleischer, founders of Fleischer Studios and inventors of the rotoscope.
Across the Spooniverse | Mingei International Museum
Apr 12–Aug 17, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Diego
This exhibition presents over 100 spoons from across the globe, each a reflection of a specific cultural context–between intimate traditions of home and family, celebratory preparations of food and drink, and the spiritual gestures of giving thanks for sustenance.
Around the world, spoons are essential implements that help us scoop, stir, mash, skim, cook, and eat! Some spoons come straight from nature–a gourd cut in half with its own built-in handle, for example, or a curved seashell. Others are carved of wood, bone, or horn, and some are made of fired clay, or hammered or cast metal.
Because of their role in the preparation and serving of food and drink, spoons are often cultural symbols of abundance and generosity. Sometimes the act of stirring, serving, or ladling is spiritually sacred. These spoons can bear visual references to the concept of blessing or a connection to the divine source of nourishment. Contemporary spoon designs include an array of forms and materials, ranging from cast resin to mass-produced flatware hand-adorned with beads or precious stones.
This exhibition presents over 100 spoons from across the globe, including examples from Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Some are adorned with exquisite carvings of human and animal figures, and others are brilliant for their simplicity of form. Some show decades or even centuries of wear and use, and others are pristine. As objects of use, spoons are universally understood. Each object is a reflection of a specific cultural context–from intimate traditions of home and family to community and celebratory preparations of food and drink, and the spiritual gestures of giving thanks for sustenance. The design of each spoon reflects the work of a maker, a person often unknown to us, whose creativity inspires a sense of wonder.
Layered Narratives | Mingei International Museum
May 17–Nov 16, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Diego
“Layered Narratives: Quilted Stories of Gender and Race at the 1876 Centennial” explores gender and racial politics at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition through the medium of centennial quilts from Mingei’s permanent collection.
The centennial celebrated the 100-year independence of the United States from Great Britain and featured various installations—ranging from foreign exhibitions to art galleries and governmental-related spaces. Taking place at a time when colonialism was romanticized and Jim Crow was nearing, many of the existing voices and stories from this event are portrayed through Eurocentric and patriarchal lenses. This exhibition focuses on the absent voices and unheard stories found at this centennial. Packed with various symbolisms and meaning, the centennial quilts featured in Layered Narratives give insight into both women’s political involvement and Black exclusion at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition and in the quilts.

The marathon races through downtown, historic landmarks, and residential neighborhoods, and the city is abuzz with excitement. You will learn beginner to advanced progressions in the big three plus several other key exercises: The Push: One-Arm/One-Leg Pushup, Wall Supported Handstand PushupThe Pull: Tactical Pullup, Hard Style Hanging Leg Raise, Front LeverThe Squat: PistolOur goal is to make you come away from the StrongFirst Bodyweight Strength Instructor Certification stronger and wiser. You should be able to take a look at a great many strength feats and exercises—and quickly reverse-engineer them. You might not be able to do them yet—but you will know exactly how to train for them. With the millions of degrees of freedom possible for our bodies, it is an endless and pointless process to catalogue a multitude of exercises and their variations: giving you the fish and making you dependent to come back for more. Instead, we will teach you how to fish. Once you have internalized the universal principles of strength, you will be able to quickly apply them to any new strength or gymnastic skills. “The knowledge of some principles easily compensates for the ignorance of some facts.” This quote by philosopher Claude Helvétius appeared in the late Prof. Yuri Verkhoshansky’s last book. It perfectly sums what we do at the StrongFirst Bodyweight Strength Instructor Certification. Visit our StrongFirst Bodyweight Strength Instructor Certification page for more details. Read the Bodyweight Strength Instructor Certification requirements. STAY SHARP. STAY STRONGFIRST CERTIFIED. Take advantage of the Unified Recertification and renew your current instructor credentials—included with your registration. Testing will be completed during the weekend. Shakespeare's Rhetorical Figures | Mission Valley Branch Library
May 18, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Diego
Dr. Gideon Rappaport will discuss his book Shakespeare's Rhetorical Figures: An Outline. When Shakespeare began writing for the stage, he had already mastered over two hundred rhetorical figures inherited from the long tradition of the language arts--grammar, logic, and rhetoric--stretching from Aristotle to his own time. These figures, which to us may appear merely decorative, were for Shakespeare the very medium of speech, and as his art developed, his figures became more and more subtly expressive of meaning.
