OPEN House! Building the Invisible Highways for Cloud and AI. | WeWork Office Space & Coworking

Jun 12, 2025 (UTC-7)
Burnaby
Cultural Experiences
The infrastructure powering today's cloud and AI revolution depends on massive networks. For the world's largest cloud operators, the drive for scalability, control, cost, and product velocity has resulted in significant innovations in both hardware and software for data center connectivity. This talk explores the evolution towards network disaggregation - separating hardware and software, akin to the shift from single-vendor smartphones to the open Android ecosystem. We'll examine the limitations of traditional approaches at cloud scale and delve into how open source software on custom-designed hardware is enabling more flexibility, faster iterations, and cost-efficiency, to ultimately build the critical "invisible highways" necessary for the future of cloud and AI. Register now to learn how Nexthop.ai is working to unlock the benefits of open source software like SONiC for Cloud and AI networking. Information Source: Raymond To (Event organizer) | eventbrite

Burnaby
Cultural Experiences
We're thrilled to present Dr. Michelle Kunimoto as our 2025 Paul Sykes Memorial Lecturer! Abstract : From the early days of exoplanet discovery to the revolutionary understanding of thousands of planets today, the field of exoplanet science has evolved at an astonishing pace. In this talk, Dr. Kunimoto will share their experience searching for potentially habitable planets with NASA's Kepler mission and discovering thousands of planets with NASA's TESS mission, highlighting the challenges and thrills of analyzing massive datasets to find new worlds. As the field has progressed, the focus has shifted to understanding the atmospheres of exoplanets and rethinking what makes a planet habitable. Exoplanet science provides the opportunity to start answering the age-old question: Are we alone? Bio: Michelle Kunimoto is an assistant professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UBC, where she also obtained her PhD. She was previously a postdoctoral fellow at MIT where she worked on NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission. Dr. Kunimoto is an expert on discovering and characterizing strange new worlds outside of the Solar System, known as exoplanets. She aims to understand the demographics and diversity of exoplanets, especially those that are potentially habitable and Earth-like. Across all of her planet-hunting endeavours, Dr. Kunimoto has found over 3400 planets and planet candidates. Information Source: RASC Vancouver | eventbrite

TaxFighter Award Reception Honouring Jordan Bateman | Delta Hotels Burnaby Conference Centre

Jun 19, 2025 (UTC-7)
Burnaby
Conferences
About the Award The TaxFighter Award is given out by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) to recognize Canadians who have made an outstanding contribution to the cause of taxpayer emancipation. This award has been given to lawmakers, media personalities, academics and average citizens who have stood out and stood up in fighting for limited and accountable government. About the Recipient Jordan Bateman is VP-Communications of the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association (ICBA). Through his work at ICBA, his previous work at the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, and as an elected councillor in Langley Township, Jordan has racked up several wins for taxpayers. Most famously, Jordan led the ‘NO’ campaign in the 2015 TransLink sales tax referendum. Despite being outspent 170 to 1 and opposed by Vancouver’s political elites, the ‘NO’ campaign came from behind in the polls for a landslide win. Jordan was also the leading champion against the Medical Services Premium tax that was ultimately abolished in BC. At ICBA, Jordan has helped lead campaigns challenging BC’s gas tax, supporting responsible resource development projects, and fought union-only contracting rules that tacked billions onto the cost of public infrastructure projects. About the Event Please join us for an after-work reception on Thursday June 19, 2025 at the Delta Hotels Burnaby Conference Centre as the CTF bestows its TaxFighter Award to Mr. Bateman, and recognize his contributions to the cause of limited and accountable government. About the Tickets General tickets are available to CTF supporters and the general public. If you are a member of the CTF's Taxpayers Caucus, a code is available for complimentary admission for you and one guest. If you do not have the code, please e-mail mharvie@taxpayer.com . If you cannot attend, please consider donating a ticket to a student. The CTF will find worthy students to attend in your place. Students interested in attending the event should email mharvie@taxpayer.com , as donated tickets/sponsorships may be available. Thank you for your support of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.
