Shieldbugs and leatherbugs represent a small group of often very attractive insects all of which, with a little knowledge, are readily identifiable in the field. This course will provide an introduction to the many species of shieldbugs and leatherbugs to be found in the UK. Topics covered will include the external morphology of bugs, their ecology and life cycles and a guide to finding and identifying them. After lunch we shall search for and identify the several species of shieldbugs and leatherbugs that occur in the grounds of Tyland Barn. By the end of the session it is expected that you will be able to: Identify common shieldbugs & leatherbugs Understand more about their lifecycles Led by Gill and John Brook, Naturalists Suitable for beginners and improvers This study day may also provide the opportunity for those interested in furthering their study of shieldbugs and leatherbugs to become involved as recorders for the Atlas of Shieldbugs & allies of Kent. "Instinct Twin Drift" is a competition that challenges teams of two drivers to showcase their drifting skills. The goal is to determine the best and most consistent pair of drifters around. It's important to note that this is not a singles event. Our aim is to have fun and put on an amazing show for the audience. To allow for more practice time, we will not be conducting a qualifying round. Instead, all pairs will have the chance to impress the judges in their three laps. The scores from each pair's laps will be averaged to determine the top eight teams for the finals. Consistency is key in this competition. In the final round, the remaining eight teams will have only one lap to prove who the top three winners of the Instinct Twin Drift are. It's important to note that we are not looking for a demolition derby. While close proximity is appreciated to showcase car control, judges will be more impressed by line and transition, not ramming into each other. The teams will be judged based on a 100-point system, which takes into consideration the following criteria: Precision Driving, Clipping Points for both drivers, Synchronized Transitions, Showmanship, and Bonus Points for aggressive driving, style, and presentation. It's important to remember that the goal of the competition is to mirror your partner, not compete against them. There are no car limitations in this competition, but passing the standard RSD tech is a must. Although not required, it's highly suggested that participants have a cage for safety purposes. Join us for an afternoon of fun exploring and learning about Pegsdon Hills and the animals that live there - the grazers and the wildlife. This activity is part of the Chilterns Walking Festival 2025. As well as meeting Pegsdon's lambs and working sheepdog Hope, we will be going for a guided walk to discover the rare flowers, butterflies and birdlife found around Pegsdon Hills. We will also be creating some spring-related crafts to take home with you. The guided walk will run from 2.00pm to 3.30pm. New to gardening or keen to refresh or build on your skills? This workshop introduces how to create a garden that is both beautiful and provides space for nature. Part of a series of workshops, this event will celebrate summer gardening. To start, our Wild About Gardens Officer will talk us through the basics of creating a wildlife-friendly garden, including: The benefits of a wildlife-friendly garden. What plants to choose and how to maintain them with nature in mind. Creating wildlife habitats in your outside space. Incorporating water into your garden. What to do with your lawn/mini-meadow. Naturally managing 'pests' in the garden. Reducing waste in your garden. We'll also have a look at what can be done over the summer months. Our Nature Parks & Gardens Development Officer will then take us out into the gardens at Tyland Barn to demonstrate the principles we've discussed in action and provide a tour of the garden's summer highlights. This will be followed by a hands-on activity. The first part of the workshop will take place indoors, before we head outside for the tour and activity. This weekend course with Phil Speight (recently awarded an MBE for his services to heritage crafts) gives you a chance to delve deeply into the practice of painting authentic canal roses, of the sort that decorated traditional narrowboat cabins. Please note this is a two-day course running both Saturday and Sunday. It's a very small class - there will be only three of you - so plenty of time for hands-on practice and conversation. Join us for our Open Garden at our head office, Tyland Barn Nature Park and Gardens. A fantastic and easy way to experience the wonders of our Kentish countryside. The park was created to be a little Kent and now has woodlands, colourful wildflower meadows and a large pond full of life. You might spot spectacular orchids, stag beetles in the log piles or dragonfly flitting over the reeds. The planting in the Tyland Barn area has recently been redesigned and becomes a contemporary, colourful and inspirational example of how we can all help wildlife in our gardens. This inclues a dry garden, vegetable planters, winter flower beds, fruit shrubs and pollinator planting.
