Arts Orchestra
Join us on Saturday August 9 for the choral highlight of the summer – the grand final concert of the 5th Annual SING THE NORTH Summer Choral Festival directed by Canadian choral legend Howard Dyck ! Host of CBC's Saturday Afternoon at the Opera and Choral Concert for many years, and longtime conductor of the Kitchener-Waterloo Grand Philharmonic Choir as well as numerous choirs and orchestras around the world, Howard Dyck returns to Victoria to lead a thrilling concert centred on the choral music of J. S. Bach. An innovative program, including a Canadian Bach premiere Audiences will hear Bach’s hugely uplifting Magnificat in D and the Cantata 137 Lobe den Herre n , plus what we believe to be the Canadian premiere of the newly reconstructed “original” version of Bach’s famous Sanctus – come and hear the 3rd soprano part that was eventually edited out when the piece was added to the later B-minor Mass. In this very special concert curated by Festival Artistic Director, Kathryn Whitney , listeners will have the rare chance to hear Bach’s great works alongside the wonderfully lively and skilful music by Bach’s female contemporaries: composers Fr ancesca Caccini , Isabella Leonarda , and Vittoria Aleotti . Beautiful music of similar depth and focus will round out the program: the great piece Crux fidelis by Victoria-born Sarah MacDonald , a Cree Lullaby (the original tune thought to predate Bach by centuries) by Cree-Dene composer Sherryl Sewepagaham , and three wonderful pieces by our 2025 Feature Composer, Canadian-born Seattle-based singer and composer Joy Decoursey-Porter . World-class soloists from Vienna and Canada Howard has assembled a stellar team of world-class soloists: tenor Michael Schade (travelling from his home in Vienna to sing at our Festival); Canada’s most prolific recording artist, Daniel Taylor , countertenor; and James Westman , bass, a hugely expressive performer who has sung across the world. Returning for her second-ever appearance in British Columbia is the exceptional young Toronto-based Polish-Canadian soprano Karoline Podolak – a wonderful chance to hear this voice of a generation only now just spreading her wings internationally. Howard Dyck conducts the 110-voice Sing the North Summer Festival Chorus and Festival Orchestra, sharing our three Festival Chamber Choirs with festival director, Kathryn Whitney. Concertmaster Simon MacDonald leads the Festival Orchestra, with the cathedral's Assistant Director of Music, Mark McDonald , on organ. Tickets: $30 (general Admission), $15 (students) Information Source: Christ Church Cathedral | eventbrite

Arts Comedy
Too often in longform or game-based improv, we might default to characters who are angry, antagonistic, or defensive. While conflict can be funny, these choices can shut down discovery, limit the joy of play, and reduce our partners to targets instead of collaborators. This workshop is all about choosing openness, play, and most importantly, foolishness. We'll explore what happens when we make the choice to be silly, clueless, curious, or just plain wrong, instead of being “right.” With a strong point-of-view, foolish characters invite the world to play with them, not push against it. About D'Arcy Briggs: D'ARCY BRIGGS (he/they) has been an educator at all levels, from kindergarten to adult education. Honesty, play, and co-developing a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere is at the heart of everything he does. He is a co-founder of The Bakery, regularly performs with Paper Street Theater's Masterclass program, and has been a member of the Impromaniacs Theatre Company Society. He is also a member of the duo Burger & Briggs, an improv duo that performs at the intersections of emotion, movement, and play. Information Source: D'Arcy Briggs | eventbrite

DESTROYED CINEMA AND MUSIC returns with the world-premiere of Victoria’s own “Search for Gold” directed by John Ledingham. After cutting his feature-length teeth with the concert film documentary The Promised End in a collaboration with JP Meldrum and Maxwell Patterson, Ledingham’s first solo-feature Search for Gold revels in Victoria’s twenty-something weirdos bumming around, drinking beers, reading Sisek, jamming, working dead-end jobs, and finding purpose in the Coffee News . Inspired equal parts by tree planting, Linklater’s Slacker , Motern Media, and the local music scene, Search for Gold film may very well iron out a template for a Victoria DIY film scene to-be. Unlike previous events, This Machine and Trackmeet will play before the film, then John and some of the cast will do a Q&A moderated by JP & Nick, then the night will close out with Teenage Art Scene and The Thunes . FORMAT IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE. Party on… -------------------------------------------------------------------- August 10th 2025 / Little Fernwood (1921 Fernwood Rd) / Doors at 630 with Music at 7 then Movie at 8 / 15$ or PWYC / All Ages -------------------------------------------------------------------- This Machine Destroyed welcomes folk/punk - not be confused with folk-punk - act This Machine. A trio of spirited, passionate Gen Xers. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Trackmeet A post-punk, deep-Rock, garage-y virtuoso four-piece featuring members of Heron Heron. As party-ready as they are bound to make you want to practice more. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Teenage Art Scene Victoria’s number one Sloan fans, so I’ve heard; hot off tour and their killer new Power-Pop record “Format Wars”. -------------------------------------------------------------------- The Thunes “Just 4 Fun loving guys and a hired gun cruisin’ on through this crazy little rainforest we now call home. Ever since their conception The Thunes have been keeping it loose playing whatever comes off the top. Their stylistic melting pot of musical chicken soup has quenched the hunger and warmed the souls of music lovers all over Vancouver island”.
