This workshop explores the power of writing about war, grief, and trauma—not only as a form of expression, but as an act of social justice. We will discuss how to ensure that no type of pain is ‘unspeakable’, and will reflect on how storytelling can incorporate silence, resist erasure, and safeguard truth. We’ll explore the possibilities of creative non-fiction—experimenting with voice, structure, and form, making space for difficult experiences and the language that might carry them. No writing experience needed—just a willingness to listen, reflect, and give it a go. Bio Dr Olesya Khromeychuk is a historian and writer. She is the author of The Death of a Soldier Told by His Sister (2022). Khromeychuk has written for The New York Times, The New York Review of Books, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, Prospect and The New Statesman, and has delivered a TED talk on ‘What the World Can Learn From Ukraine's Fight for Democracy’. Tuesday 10 June 2025 - Tuesday 15 July 2025: 7 - 9pm Come along and experience a safe, supportive stand-up comedy course with others, where you will learn the art of creating and performing comedy at your pace, and in your own unique style. Description During this stand up comedy course, you will develop material and learn how to maximise its comic potential. This course is for performers and non-performers, and can particularly support public speaking skills, along with: Resilience, improve mental health, confidence and professional leadership, and it's fun - and funny! You are given ongoing, supportive feedback to help you edit and hone your writing and speaking skills. INCLUDED within the course price: Individual 121 ZOOM session - 20 minutesThe sessions will focus on finding your stage persona and the ability to express your own point of view.We will explore storytelling and improv to maximise comic potential.You will be encouraged to find the funny in everything and anything.We work on listening and developing a rapport with your audience, and concentrate on various comedy techniques used by many professional comedians and speakers.You will investigate creating and using characters within your set.So come along and be involved with lots of laughter, learning and very valuable life skills. The fifth Without End, hosted by House Of Quiet and Tom Stephens, comes as part of Art Week Exeter's programming. Saturday 14th June, from 11 til 2, we'll be outside the Birdhouse Cafe in Pinces Gardens, in St Thomas. Pray for good weather! Without End is a sound-drawing workshop, where musicians improvise music live, and attendees are invited to indulge their craft along to the music. We've had painters, sketchbookers, readers, journallers, writers and charcoalists. Whatever your medium, bring your tools and make your art while we improvise the sound around you. The Birdhouse cafe will be open throughout serving hot and cold drinks, as well as food. There are a few blankets and chairs but we recommend bringing your own to avoid disappointment! Hosted by Spork! founder and silly stand-up poet Chris White Malaika Kegode is an award-winning writer, performer, theatre-maker and creative producer based in Bristol. Her work is focused on uplifting and celebrating the voiceless, overlooked and misunderstood. Malaika’s work has been featured on a variety of stages, including Southbank Centre, Lyric Hammersmith, University of Austria and The Scottish Storytelling Centre. In addition to her writing, Malaika works as a mentor, dramaturg and editor. She's a vocal advocate for creativity as a tool for healing, connection and collaboration, and a proud Trustee for mental health & arts charity Many Minds. Compelling in her plain-speaking honesty - The Guardian Caroline Bird is an award-winning poet. Her selected poems Rookie (2022), and The Air Year (2020) are two of Carcanet’s most popular books of the present decade. She won the Forward Prize for Best Collection in 2020, and has been shortlisted for a number of prizes including the TS Eliot Prize, the Costa Book Awards, the Ted Hughes Award, the Polari Prize and the Dylan Thomas Prize. Her seventh collection, Ambush at Still Lake, was published in June 2024. An expert storyteller. Most of these poems have a dramatic immediacy, full of humour and the enjoyably bizarre... The Times Liteary Supplement Lizzie Lidster is a Devon based singer-songwriter with a collection of heartfelt songs infused with hooky choruses, chunky riffs and thought-provoking lyrics, and a pinch of observational humour. Details This event will take place in the Rougemont Room at Exeter Library. Tickets are just £7, or £5 for self-selecting conessions. There will be a pop-up bar serving soft drinks and booze.
