For any power motorboat operation on tidal waters, you must successfully complete a boating safety course approved by the New Jersey State Police (NJSP) to receive a New Jersey Boating Safety Course Certificate. Visit the NJSP Marine Service Bureau website for full details. Please see the age requirements below. This course is taught by certified Coast Guard Auxiliary Instructors. It includes the required time requirement and course content including specific information on the laws of New Jersey. At the end of the course, an examination is administered and upon passing the exam, a valid temporary New Jersey Boat Safety Certificate will be issued. The formal certificate will be issued by the State of New Jersey and mailed to you at a future date. The New Jersey State Police boating safety manual can be found online at this link: https://www.state.nj.us/lps/njsp/info/pdf/marine/021606-boating-safety-manual.pdf NJ Boating Safety Education & Minimum Age Requirements [link] A person less than 13 years of age may not operate a motorized vessel. A person under the age of 16 may not operate a PWC. A person 13 through 15 years of age may operate a vessel powered by an electric motor or vessels 12 feet or longer and powered by a motor less than 10 hp only if he or she has successfully passed a boating safety education course approved by the New Jersey State Police. A person 16 years old or older, may operate a motorized vessel if they have successfully completed an approved boating safety course.
