A two-day course giving participants the skills and confidence to assess habitats, both in terms of type and quality. the ability to identify indicator species an overview of some key UKHAB, Phase I and NVC communities a chance to do quadrat sampling and share ideas with colleagues a chance to see a broad range of lowland habitat types including improved and unimproved grassland, calcareous grassland, wet meadows, acid grassland, heathland and mire communities The purpose of much botanical survey is to tell us what is going on in the landscape around us – is it being over-managed, or unmanaged? Has the land been subject to agricultural improvement? What type of soil is it? Is it a habitat which is likely to support a wide range of species? This course will focus on how to identify the key indicator species for improved and semi-improved grasslands, floodplain meadows, calcareous grasslands, acid grasslands, dry and wet lowland heath and mires. There will be reference to, but not in depth discussion of, Phase I, UKHAB and NVC communities. Whilst aimed at beginners, these courses are more likely to be enjoyed with a basic level of prior plant ID skills, and they form an ideal follow-on from the training courses earlier in the year. About the tutor Dominic Price is a highly regarded botanical tutor and has been running courses for all levels of ecologists since 2007. He is director of The Species Recovery Trust and specialises in the conservation of endangered species. He is the author of A Field Guide to Grasses, Sedges and Rushes, and co-author of A Field Guide to Bryophytes and The Photographic Guide to Winter Trees and Shrubs. Schedule Day 1: This day will focus on calcareous and neutral grasslands, covering species-rich chalk grassland, species-poor improved grassland and marshy grassland on the Avon Floodplain 10.05 Arrive on site - Old Sarum. 10.15 First tutorial session – improved and SI grassland 10.45 Mesotrophic and chalk grassland 12.30 Lunch (or shorter if weather bad) 1.15 Wet grassland on the Avon Valley 3.10 Calcareous Grasslands at Camp Down 3.45 Return to Old Sarum c. 4:00 End Day 2: This day will focus on acidic habitats, covering the key species which make up acid grassland, dry and wet heath, and mire and bog habitats. 9:45 Arrival on site - New Forest 10.00 Acid Grassland/Dry Heath and damp flushes 12.30 Lunch (or shorter if weather bad) 1.20 Heaths and bogs (+dry heath) c. 3:30 Depart What to bring Water, snacks, firm boots (some steep banks). Please wear long trousers for the second day to minimise exposure to ticks (on this day there is a short amount of walking involved, and some ground will be boggy). Please bring packed lunch on both days £3 for parking at Old Sarum (contactless payment available) Ice creams should be available both days! The recommended text for the course is 'A Field Guide to Grasses, Sedges and Rushes' by Dominic Price. Available to purchase on the day, in the ticket options, or in advance here . Any problems on the day please call Dominic Price on (07968) 786390. Please inform us of any relevant medical requirements/conditions we should be aware of prior to the course. Lifts available from Salisbury station on request. Hugely Important Information The second day of the course is in the New Forest, so if you are booking overnight accommodation you may wish to stay nearer there (if you find somewhere nice it's a fantastic chance to go out for an evening and listen to Nightjar). Please do not come to Old Sarum on the second day as you will miss a significant part of the morning driving on to the New Forest. On the first day the gates to Old Sarum do not open until 10am, so please do not attempt to enter the site before 10:05am as it very quickly blocks the access track if there is a delay in site opening. If you are coming from far we appreciate it is hard to time this, but there is a pull-in just to the south of the site (opposite the Harvester) where you can wait, or a small Co-op or large Waitrose further south on the edge of town. Directions Day 1 Old Sarum is signed off the A345, 2 miles north of Salisbury. Meet in the main car park (where there are loos). Address: Castle Road, Salisbury, Wiltshire, SP1 3SD. There is a £3 charge for parking (contactless payment available). Please note the site unfortunatley doesn't open until 10am, and they have asked us not to block the track up to the gates before then Google maps - click here what3words: harsh.parading.flattered Day 2 Day 2: Meet in Whitefield Moor car park, Rhinefield Road (on the way out of Brockenhurst, SO42 7QD) where there are loos. Google maps - click here what 3 words – rudder.sandpaper.nooks Adverse weather This is an outdoor run course on an exposed site, and as such we request that participants bring suitable clothing including sunhats, sunblock, and full waterproofs & fleeces. As the climate breaks down, we do occasionally have severe weather where either it is very difficult to take notes due to prolonged heavy rain, or temperatures have reached a point where long exposure can be detrimental to health. In these instances, we will run a condensed version of the course, where we aim to see all the species before lunch but have less time to take notes on them. We will then give attendees free access to the corresponding online course for 24 hours, which means you can take notes and look at the species in more detail in the comfort of your home. We have built a corresponding online catalogue of courses for this purpose, and we therefore feel we can offer the same training experience while looking after attendees' welfare in the field. Therefore if you look at the forecast before the course and start panicking - don’t worry, we’ve got you! Course certificate This course can be used as part of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD). We invite attendees to download their own certificate and complete the numbers of hours spent on the course, as we are aware some attendees spend more time reading up about courses before the day, and writing their notes up and sitting the online course tests afterwards. The hours on your certificate should accurately reflect this time. Feedback from previous courses 'Dom is always a fantastic source of knowledge, and brilliant at teaching it' 'The recap sessions throughout the day really helped us to consolidate what we had been taught, making us a lot more likely to remember the species we were taught.' 'Dominic's fun and useful teaching style. He doesn't get to bogged down with to many technical terms' 'Relaxed nature of presentation with useful ways to remember identification methods. It was useful to have time to do the transects as this helped to practise our ID skills' 'Dom's approach to teaching - relaxed, engaging and knowledgable as ever' 'Mr.Price and his patient and simple approach to field ID.' Cycling Sports & Fitness
About this event Welcome to Peaty's Steel City DH 2023, the biggest little race returns to Greno woods on Saturday the 13th September. We are operating a fastest finger first system to get one of the limited race places. Race entries go Live at 19:00 on Thursday 19th June - Our most popular categories sell out in seconds, so be ready! Once you are in the system, your place is held, so don’t panic. You will need to complete all the required details to enter.  A one piece full face helmet is required to race. You will have to show Photo ID on the day to register. You must enter the relevant category as detailed below. Entry for the race will be £50 for adults and £40 for kids. This is a not for profit event, run completely by volunteers and goodwill, and all proceeds go back in to improve the woods for us mountain bikers.  Categories You must enter the correct category for you age and gender, if you enter the incorrect category your entry will be revoked. We will not move you around category, its your own responsibility to get it right or face disappointment. We receive many emails each year claiming mistakes were made, we can’t help, make sure YOU get it right.  Your category is determined by your age on the last day of 2025 not your age on the day of the race.  For example, if you will be 29 on race day but your 30th birthday is in November then you will be a Master 30 not a Senior. More details are available on the British Cycling website . Open Ripper – 10 to 12 Juvenile – 13-14 Youth – 15-16 Junior – 17-18 Senior – 19-29 Master 30 – 30-39 Master 40 – 40-49 Master 50 - 50 Plus Lasses With so many female racers entering the race, we will again run two under 18 categories (assuming there is sufficient demand). 10-14 Lasses 15-18 Lasses Senior Lasses – 19-29 Master Lasses – 30-39 Veteran Lasses – 40 plus Pro-Amateur We will also have a Pro-Am category for both Open and Lasses. – This is for elite category mtb racers, in any discipline, ONLY . If you enter this category incorrectly your entry will be revoked. If you are unsure if you qualify for this please ask in advance, not after entering - steelcityseries@gmail.com   For both Pro-Am categories, previous Steel City DH podium finishers may also be promoted at the organisers discretion.  Details This is not a full on DH race, it is a Mini DH with a push up back to the top. The track has some significant features in it but all have a B-Line option around them should you not want to ride them. You do not need a full on DH rig to race, it would suit a mid-travel full sus machine but people have raced on all sorts. Peaty has won on his 29er, 650B and even 26″. No E-Bikes are allowed. Whatever your reason is for attending the race, be it for the serious competition or just to have the experience of racing a mini Downhill, we’ll make it fun for all. Riders will get two timed runs with the fastest 3 riders in each category receiving a prize and a unique TADO medal. We operate a no refund or entry exchange policy. This is a not for profit event and is run voluntarily, therefore we don’t have the time to deal with it. Also, we do not have a reserves list. Once the entries are gone, they are gone. Do not give you entry away to anyone else as you need to show Photo ID at sign on. This is because if they hurt themselves, it invalidates our insurance.  Please also note that all entries are at the discretion of the organisers and may refused for any reason. The run details: The run will be approximately 8km at a chatty, relaxed pace, starting from Charing Station. It will be a little hilly but we will move in a group, walking the hills together and enjoying the scenery (Run time 10:45am - 12:30pm - run route to be confirmed and shared prior to the event) If you don't want to run, you can take a gentle stroll to the vineyard, along a beautiful country lanes - around 2km. As we will be on trails, we recommend wearing trail shoes if you have them. The run won't be cancelled if it's raining (but we are praying for sunshine!) There will be a bag drop Charing Station (a secure car, which will be parked at Westwell Wine Estate for when we finish) for those travelling by train.
