Threads of Refuge: Peake's House Open Days | Peake’s House

Sep 13, 2025 (UTC+1)
Colchester
Cultural Experiences
Not open to the public since 2023, visit Peake's House in the centre of Colchester as part of Heritage Open Days. Peake's House stands in the Dutch Quarter, which has retained its old street plan. Originally three cottages and with Colchester being a centre of the cloth trade, they probably belonged to weavers, the long mullioned windows designed to give light to the men at their looms. The satisfying late Elizabethan interiors of a prosperous merchant’s house provide a particularly atmospheric existence within its walls. Admission is free, leaflets on the building's history and children's activity sheets will be available on site. Accessibility Peake's House is a historic building with uneven floors, changes in floor level and stairs. It may not be suitable for people with limited mobilty. We do all we can to enable access wherever possible; for further information or if you have any access concerns that you’d like to discuss before visiting, please contact our Booking Enquiries team on 01628 825925 or booking@landmarktrust.org.uk. The Booking Office is open Mon to Fri - 9am to 5pm. Donating to Landmark as part of your visit We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to visit a Landmark for free as part of our Open Day programme, and as such we’re pleased to continue to offer free entry at all our Open Days in 2025. The Landmark Trust is a building conservation charity that relies on donations to support its work. Over the past 60 years, public support has helped us rescue over 200 historic buildings and make them available for all to experience and enjoy. Your support by attending our events, booking a workshop, and making a donation allows us to continue to save buildings at risk and continue to maintain those already in our care. Your donation could help train the craftspeople needed to restore a future Landmark, offer opportunities for young people to experience history first-hand, or provide a charity with free Landmark stay for their service users through our 50 for Free scheme. Donations can be made when you book your Eventbrite ticket, at the event via contactless donation points, or after your visit via our website under Support. Open Day entry Due to the historic nature of our buildings we have a limited capacity for our Open Day events. You may therefore be asked to wait a short time while other visitors finish their visit. Whilst booking is not essential, priority will be given to those who have booked in advance. Thank you for your co-operation. Information Source: The Landmark Trust | eventbrite

Do It For Dad 6K Memorial Race September 21, 2025 at 2:00pm This event is being held in memory of Tim Baxter, who lost his life too soon in February of 2025. Tim was a beloved husband, father, coworker, and friend to countless people and we plan to honour his memory with an annual 6k event. He was an "athlet" in his younger days, where he would always brag about running the local road races, but he was also active in many sports later in life including hockey, golf, fishing, and riding his bike to the boat with his wife, Lisa. Seeing his loved ones commemorate him in this way would mean the world to him. We believe that an event combining fitness, camaraderie, the outdoors, and cold beverages is the perfect way to remember Tim. Dunne Road will be blocked off from traffic for the race, so we encourage you to bring your kids, strollers, and dogs - all are welcome to join! See below for details. Event Breakdown: 1:00 pm - Race Registration opens 1:45 pm - Pre-Race Talk 2:00 pm - Race Start (5km) 3:00 pm - Celebration (1km Grace) Post Race Celebration at The Wreck Restaurant: A post-race event (1km grace) will be held at 'The Wreck', a local beachside bar & grill overlooking Lake Erie, a place where Tim enjoyed many pints. What a treat to have Laura Purcell talk about the follow-up to her first novel The Silent Companions. That novel was one of her most popular and we can't wait to read The House of Splinters. The evening will be hosted by fellow author JJA Harwood. If you love a classily written haunted house mystery, some early readers have promised the new novel will be even better. A new generation returns to the Bridge to rescue it from ruin, only for buried secrets and past injustices to lay their chill hand upon the families hopes. A perfect blend of the picturesque, the supernatural and dark folk-lore. Are the children safe in the shadow of "the silent companions"? Don't miss this spooky, gothic masterpiece.Doors will open at 6.45pm for a 7pm start. Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite

The Mission Bake for Ukraine aims to secure the local food supply by supporting local bakeries and farmers mainly in the cities most affected by the war. We currently support bakeries in Kyiv, Butcha, Kherson, Odesa and Kharkiv by supplying necessary ingredients, providing and maintaining essential equipment, and paying salaries to bakers. Christmas Celebration
Christmas is a time of celebration, but it can also be difficult for many. When faced with challenges, how can we find comfort in Immanuel, God with us? Join Patrick Regan OBE and Graham Kendrick for an evening of music, interviews and a Christmas message, hosted by Bekah Legg (CEO, Restored). The evening will include live music from Graham Kendrick, joined by exceptional musicians Jason Carter (harp and guitar) and Natasha Petrovic (vocals and violin). Alongside the music we'll enjoy interviews, film clips and a Christmas message brought to us by Patrick Regan OBE. There will also be the chance to hear from Bekah Legg about the work of Restored, a Christian organisation working to support survivors of domestic abuse and equip churches to respond.
