Cultural Experiences
Bring your own DSLR or mirrorless camera and learn how to take amazing macro photographs of wildlife. This workshop will teach you how to use your camera settings for macro photography and techniques to capture highly detailed and sharp images of plants, insects and other wildlife. After the indoor session you will get a chance to practice what you have learned by taking photographs around Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve (near Ringwood) before returning to the classroom to take part in an informal and constructive review of the images at the end of the day. Please note: This workshop is unsuitable for compact cameras/phones. Is this course for me? This workshop is great for improvers - you do not need macro photography experience but you should be familiar with using your camera on your own custom settings. If you are not familiar with taking control of your camera and have been running it on automatic settings only, please also book onto the 'Wildlife Photography Workshop - Basics' course, held at Blashford Lakes on the 7th June. This will give you the knowledge to attend and make the most of this macro course. When and where? Saturday 21st June 2025 9:45am to 4:15pm. Arrive from 9:30am. Blashford Lakes is situated to the north of Ringwood. Before booking, please ensure you read the Course Booking - Terms and conditions What do I need to bring? DSLR camera or mirrorless camera (including ‘bridge’ cameras) A camera support (e.g. tripod/beanbag). An empty memory card in your camera A spare, fully charged battery Teas, coffees and biscuits are provided but please bring your own lunch. Tutor - John Combes John has been interested in nature and photography for over 40 years. A business studies lecturer for 31 years, since taking early retirement he was then self-employed as a wildlife photographer and lecturer for 20 years, concentrating on giving presentations to local clubs and societies as well as running photographic workshops/courses. He does his own wildlife sound recording and music production as part of his presentations. Early interests in nature photography were concentrated on close-up work with insects and flowers, but he now covers all aspects of UK wildlife as well as landscapes. Visits to the Canary Islands and Cyprus have added to his range of talks but he mainly concentrates on nature in the local area with the New Forest and Purbeck Coast providing a constant source of inspiration. He now uses both Micro 4/3 (Panasonic Lumix G9, Olympus OM1) and Full frame (Canon R6, R5) cameras and sees the benefits of both systems. This is not a free event. In order to officially secure your spot in this event and receive the details email you must register and pay on our site by visiting the link below. https://www.trailboundproject.com/service-page/fire-2?referral=service_list_widget Do you struggle to start a fire or keep one going? Are you confident you can start a fire in an emergency - in a driving rain? In the snow? Fire keeps us warm, dries us out, and keeps us company. It can save your life. This class prescribes exactly what to carry and fine-tunes your technique for reliable results. We’ll leave behind more primitive (albeit fun) friction fire-starting methods and we’ll focus on the items we always carry in our packs. After all, do you have two hours to build a bow drill and start a fire in an emergency? Do you carry a 9-volt battery and steel wool? After taking this class, you will know exactly the items to carry in your pack to start a fire in any conditions. They are proven, redundant, and dependable time and time again. In addition, students will learn fire theory - why things burn, what to burn, and what not to burn. Sure, fire-making skills are survival techniques, but this isn’t a survival class. These are basic skills everyone should have to enjoy cooking on camping trips, campfires on backpacking trips, fires in your fireplace, and of course, yes, in a survival emergency. Minimum Age: 12 years old - the minor(s) and a parent/guardian must all be paid registered participants. Information Source: TrailBound Project | eventbrite
