Encaustic Fine Art Photo Workshop: Embracing Wabi Sabi Imperfections Are you searching to infuse more visual interest into your work, seeking to create pieces that resonate deeply within you? With my intuitive approach, infused with a wabi sabi twist that embraces imperfections, this workshop invites your heart to sing its own unique melody. Through this lens, your creations begin to tell stories—inviting viewers to interpret them through the lens of their own experiences. In this transformative workshop, students merge photographic imagery with collage and encaustic painting, creating an alchemy of textures and impact. Each participant will undergo a personalized editing session, crafting a visual narrative and selecting images that harmonize best within their composition. Guided by the principles of wabi sabi, we'll explore collage and encaustic painting techniques, fostering creativity that flows symbolically and intuitively. Delving into the rich history of encaustic painting, you'll uncover the versatility of working with wax. You will discover techniques from layering, image transfers, embedding, and more. From the encaustic iron to mark-making tools, each element adds depth and dimension to your piece. Fabrics will serve as embossing elements, imparting richness to your composition. Students will complete two 8” x 10” paintings and sample boards.
Students are required to bring their own cradled wooden panels. All tools and materials provided, except boards. Students are encouraged to bring personal photocopies for use in class. Class size is limited to 6 students for personalized attention.
All supplies provided by instructor, with the exception of cradled wooden panels, to be provided by the student. Light snacks and drinks provided throughout the day, with a celebratory glass of wine to conclude our artistic exploration! What Is Encaustic? Encaustic, derived from the Greek to heat or burn in, is a medium steeped in ancient tradition. Used by the Egyptians for their Fayum Mummy Portraits, its durability and timeless beauty endure. Impervious to moisture, beeswax serves as the foundation, offering transparency and adhesive qualities when combined with pigments. What You Will Learn: - Step-by-step techniques for underpainting, color, and composition. - Integration of mixed media into your photos. - embedding photos into warm wax. - Creation of smooth or textured surfaces. - Collage, gold leaf, silver leaf, bronze leaf, feathers, fibers, and threads in encaustic. - Utilization of stylus and encaustic iron. - Patina, dry rub, and stencil techniques. - Small class size allows for personalized instruction.
