BOTANICAL CYANOTYPES & BOOKMAKING We will spend the day outdoors in the sun exploring the process of cyanotypes (aka 'sun prints’) to create striking blue and white botanical prints of leaves and flowers. WHAT WILL I GET FROM THIS WORKSHOP? You will experiment with a variety of flowers and leaves to make and take away between 6 and 10 striking ‘blue prints’ (cyanotypes) ranging in paper finish and size (including cotton-based artist paper, cartridge, coloured papers and interesting ephemera such as envelopes). You will also hand stitch your own cyanotype-cover sketchbook to takeaway. WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION In this workshop you will explore the process of cyanotypes, a cameraless form of photography where we will use the sunlight to capture silhouettes of different flowers and leaves. We'll compare the different affects you can create with opaque and translucent botanical objects, and see what interesting and playful results you get from working with different papers. We will use our cyanotypes to hand stitch our own A6 note/sketchbook (to keep or give away!) Everything you need is provided, just bring an apron and/or wear scruffs as the cyanotype chemicals – although completely safe – can stain fabrics. If you have some leaves and flower cuttings you would like to use, bring these along. There is no minimum ability expected - anyone with an interest in the arts, printing and working with nature-based images are welcome. Be aware that we will be working outside in the sunshine so come prepared and protected from the elements with sun cream and a hat. In the event of adverse weather, we will work inside using a light box. There is no ‘formal’ break, but the workshop is very relaxed with opportunities for rest/time out throughout. Everyone is encouraged and supported to work at their own pace. WHO IS MY TUTOR? The workshop is run by Zoe, a qualified and experienced art tutor currently teaching at a specialist arts university in Leeds. She is interested in process-driven arts and hands-on analogue practices. She is a big believer in learning by doing and making mistakes as a form of enquiry, an ethos which underpins her teaching. Bradford Cathedral is fortunate enough to have in its collection a number of beautiful, intricate and historically significant ecclesiastical textiles. These include altar frontals and other textiles designed by Morris & Co., the Leek Embroidery Society, Bradfordian artist Ernest Sichel and renowned Bradfordian embroiderer, Louisa Pesel, who designed an altar frontal that was worked on by shell-shocked soldiers during World War One. There are also contemporary textiles designed by Polly Meynell. Join us as we tour the Cathedral, seeing these stunning textiles in situ- some of which are rarely on display- and hearing the fascinating stories behind them. Light refreshments will be available after the tours. Accessibility information Unfortunately, due to the fact that some of the textiles are located in parts of the building that can only be reached by stairs, this tour is unsuitable for wheelchair users. Bradford Cathedral was largely built in the 15th century, on a steep hillside, and has Victorian and 20th century additions that include a number of sets of steps and narrow spaces that are unsuitable for ramps. Lucy began quilting in Spring 2020 and fell in love fast! Inspired by modern quilters who are reviving this art for the 21st century with clean lines and bright colour pallets. She also loves learning about the rich history and stories behind quilting as an artform. Although quite new to quilting, Lucy learned to sew very young, studying Textile Design at college and then Stage and Costume Design at university. She picked her sewing machine back up during lockdown, when fabric shops were closed there were only small scraps and old clothes available at home, the perfect place to start a quilt! Now she buys her fabrics and materials from local suppliers across Yorkshire. Lucy enjoys the waste-free, eco-friendly and thrifty nature of quilting, using every scrap of fabric to make a product that can be treasured for years to come. @lucy.quilts Join modern quilter Lucy Norton for an introduction to all things quilting! In this workshop we will work through every step to make a quilt, starting with choosing fabrics, patterns, piecing, sandwiching, quilting and finally making your own binding. Creating a Visual Journal (Sketchbook) A wonderful, expressive workshop of exploring how to create a stunning visual journal and how to use your sketchbook to record thought provoking memories, focusing on learning and experimenting with different skills and techniques. About this event An introduction on how to create and enjoy using a sketchbook to create a thought-provoking visual journal led by Yorkshire artist and designer Justine Hardisty. Join artist and designer Justine Hardisty for a workshop of exploring a wide range of ideas of what to include in your own unique visual journal within the pages of a sketchbook. Justine will guide you through step-by-step tips that will make your sketchbook a wonderful record, not only of your artistic journey but your thoughts, events, and observations in life that you can look back upon over time. Throughout the day you will learn valuable skills and techniques on ideas of what to include and how to enjoy your visual journey sketchbook that we would love you continue to develop at home! You will learn that to get the most out of your visual journal we suggest adding something to your sketchbook often. That may be recording a thought, idea or inspirational quote or merely sticking in a ticket or something you have found appealing. Sketchbooks are amazing tools for experimentation and interpretation as they allow you to practise skills and techniques using a wide range of media, tools and resources. You will find that creating a visual journal in a sketchbook is relaxing, rewarding and promotes good mental health and mindfulness when you become immersed within its pages. They enable you to create a wonderful visual record of events, places, likes and life experiences through imagery, words, colour, pattern as well as the special things that you collect and attach. Your sketchbook will become your constant companion and used for everything. You can doodle and sketch from observation or imagination, create patterns or practise lettering as well as paste in your favourite things. You can do anything- and- everything to make your unique visual journal personal and useful to you-the possibilities are endless! In this introductory workshop Justine will use her 40 years’ experience of being an artist and designer to immerse you into the world of visual journaling in a sketchbook through expression, interpretation and experimentation using a range of materials, media, skills and techniques. The workshop will involve: • Introduction into the composition of a visual journal in a sketchbook • Looking at what to include and how to personalise it • Learning how to be explorative, expressive and take risks with mark making • Learning and experimenting with techniques, skills, materials and media • Understanding how to build a unique visual journal page by page to make it a useful and enjoyable companion • You will receive a handout detailing the content of the workshop on how to create and use a sketchbook Skill level: Beginner- no painting or drawing experience necessary. Cost: £50 per person – all art materials and equipment use included. *Please note: As sketchbooks are very personal to everyone, we ask that you provide your own for the workshop. Which one you choose will very much depend on the materials you plan to use inside. For example, if you know you will be wanting to experiment with watercolours you will need a sketchbook that has thicker pages. Also, as your sketchbook will be your constant companion, we suggest that you purchase one of a size that is portable. Information Source: The Craft House | eventbrite
