Give yourself permission to step away, for a time, from the concerns of the world. Join us for an immersive walk along the Tregaron footpaths in the tradition of Shinrin-yoku or forest bathing, a Japanese wellness practice that helps individuals access the healing properties of nature. Research shows that extended contemplative time in nature calms the mind, promotes well-being, and cultivates a profound sense of belonging. The experience begins with an orientation to, and expression of gratitude for, the place where we will be spending our time. It includes warm-ups, centering, breathing exercises, a non-strenuous walk, and a brief time sitting. We conclude by reflecting on the experience and learning how the practice can be used in daily life. Our guide is Susan West Montgomery , a Kripalu Certified Outdoor Mindfulness Guide. She specializes in developing customized excursions at natural, historic, and cultural sites where she can deepen the mindfulness experience by layering in the nature-culture connection. Preparation: We will be walking on mulched trails and stone steps with some moderate hill climbing. Bring a jacket if light rain is expected. Weather Policy: If we need to cancel due to heavy rain, you will be notified by 8 :00 am on June 1 and a full refund will be issued. (Tickets will otherwise be non-refundable.) Directions and Other Information: We will meet at the iron gate entrance at 3031 Klingle Road, NW. (Just below the corner of Woodley and Klingle Roads.) Tregaron is a 10-15 minute walk from the Cleveland Park or Woodley Metro stops. Two-hour street parking is available nearby. For more location details, visit our website . Background As Washington continues to assess Taiwan’s self-defense capacity largely through the lens of defense budgets and conventional military readiness, this event invites a broader conversation: What truly defines a nation’s ability to endure and respond to conflict? Drawing on over three years of Ukraine’s wartime experience, we explore how resilience is not built by state institutions and armed forces alone, but also through the mobilization of civil society and the adaptability of its technology ecosystem. From rapid drone innovation to decentralized, civilian-driven supply chains, Ukraine has demonstrated how democratic societies can shape defense outcomes in unconventional and powerful ways. In this context, Taiwan stands at the forefront of a pressing global challenge. As a technologically advanced democracy facing sustained coercion from the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan is actively exploring new modes of defense that combine formal military capabilities with civilian technological innovation and whole-of-society resilience strategies. Objectives This discussion aims to broaden how Taiwan’s defense resilience is understood within the Washington policy community. By highlighting lessons from Ukraine — including civil-military collaboration, open-source innovation, and responses to gray-zone tactics — the event offers alternative frameworks for evaluating preparedness beyond traditional metrics. It will also explore how Taiwan’s technological capacity and civic engagement could serve as key pillars of defense in a future crisis, demonstrating how democratic societies can respond creatively to authoritarian threats. Featuring speakers with expertise in civilian-led drone innovation, wartime supply chains, and China’s military modernization, the discussion offers U.S. policymakers and defense analysts timely insights into how Taiwan’s evolving experience can inform more adaptive and democratic approaches to security. Partner Organization Democratic Progressive Party Mission in the United States Speakers and Moderator Bio Iris Shaw Iris Shaw serves as the Director of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Mission in the United States, where she leads the Party’s outreach to the U.S. government, Congress, and policy community in Washington, DC. Over the past decade, she has helped coordinate high-level visits by senior DPP leaders, including President Lai Ching-te (then Mayor of Tainan), as well as former Chair Su Tseng-chang and President Tsai Ing-wen. She also contributed to major party initiatives, including the English translation of President Tsai’s 2016 inaugural address and the drafting of the DPP’s National Defense Policy Blue Paper. East City Bookshop welcomes Simone Soltani to discuss her sophomore romance novel, Ride With Me . Note on Format: This hybrid event will have both an in-person component with limited seating as well as a virtual broadcast via Zoom Webinar. Both in-person and virtual attendees will be able to pose questions to the author during audience Q&A. ABOUT RIDE WITH ME A marriage of convenience threatens to go off track in this steamy Formula 1 romance from the USA Today bestselling author of Cross the Line . Stella Baldwin thought her life couldn’t get worse. Being left at the altar was bad enough, and the drunken rant she posted to her social media followers in the aftermath was the cherry on top. But having to show up at her cousin’s bachelorette party in Las Vegas barely two weeks later feels like a cruel joke. Thomas Maxwell-Brown is just looking for a good time. With his family’s expectations pressing down, his career as a Formula 1 driver threatened by fresh talent, and a new reputation making him the most hated man on the grid, he needs a break to clear his head. And what better way to decompress than with a stag party in Vegas? Stella isn’t the woman Thomas expects to meet that night. And Thomas isn’t the man Stella expects to wake up next to in the morning—with a ring on her finger. Staying married might be the perfect solution to all their problems, even if it is a little wild. Sometimes, what happens in Vegas doesn’t need to stay there. . . . Simone Soltani is a romance author and former ghost writer for a serialized fiction platform. Born and raised in Washington, DC, she holds a BA in Geography from The George Washington University, which she likes to think comes in handy for world-building in her novels. When she’s not writing, she spends most of her time planning vacations she’ll probably never get to go on, reorganizing her many bookshelves, and watching sports while cuddling with her dogs. Annie Crown , author of NIGHT SHIFT, writes new adult and contemporary romance full of humor, heart, and plenty of spice. A born-and-raised California girl, she holds a bachelor’s in English from USC and enjoys iced coffee in the morning and frozen margaritas in the afternoon. When she isn’t writing, she’s probably rewatching her comfort shows, adding more romance novels to her ever-growing TBR, or daydreaming about fictional men who say things that make you melt. Mental health therapists often feel overwhelmed when they begin working with young children who aren’t able to engage in traditional talk therapy models. This course will prepare participants to engage children and their caregivers in two evidence-based models of play therapy. Participants will then have a chance to practice these skills on day two and learn how to integrate caregivers into the play therapy process using Filial Therapy. Throughout both days, the presenter will use clips from a beloved story - “Where the Wild Things Are” to make the concepts and skills come alive. Participants will have ample opportunity to ask questions, receive feedback, and learn new skills in a supportive environment.
