Recognised as one of England’s Top 100 ‘Irreplaceable Places’ , The National Museum of Computing (TNMOC) is home to the world's largest collection of working historic computers. Our team will be on hand to deliver the stories and full demonstrations of the working exhibits here at The National Museum of Computing, housing the world's largest collection of functional historic computers and WW2 machines, including, Enigma, Lorenz the working Turing-Welchman Bombe, the rebuilt Colossus (the world’s first electronic computer) and the WITCH (the world's oldest working digital computer). Why Visit TNMOC's Block H? The Museum enables visitors to follow the development of computing from the ultra-secret pioneering efforts of the 1940s, through the large systems and mainframes of the 1950s-70s, onto the rise of personal computing in the 1980s, and beyond. 1. STEAM Family Half-Term Activities! Fun for the whole family You will also have the opportunity to explore the whole museum as a family and be inspired by the hands-on demonstrations from our expert guides and volunteers. We offer a variety of activities from Robots, screen free activities and OSMO Augmented Reality to programming BBC micro:bits! So, lots to fascinate kids throughout the half term. Our educational STEAM activities have become the go-to Milton Keynes event for children wanting creative fun during the school holidays and every weekend throughout the year. Please note that these hands-on activities are not drop-off events. Parental supervision is required at all times. Each day consists of 2 drop in sessions spread throughout the day, leaving you time to explore the museum and enjoy all of the STEM activities! Our popular Public Guided Tours have returned for the holiday periods! In this two-hour walking tour, the evolution of computing will unfold before your eyes. Accompanied by one of our fantastic team of friendly and knowledgeable Museum Guides, adventure through the Museum and be captivated by the extraordinary artefacts in our unrivalled collection. Journey from the early electro-mechanical code breaking machines of WWII and the world's first entirely digital semi-programmable computer, discovering how technology evolved from valves and early semiconductors to the modern microprocessors we use today. You will uncover the development of large mainframes, supercomputers and scientific mini-computers, responsible for process control from office-based systems to airspace! The tour will conclude by exploring the rise of personal computing, mobile computing and the advent of the internet and smart devices, bringing you up-to-date by examining how this technology has revolutionised the way we now interact with machines and each other. Please note, to give you the best experience, places on our Public Guided Tours are limited to a maximum of 16 people. Our Public Guided Tours are primarily targeted towards an adult audience. We do not recommend our Public Guided Tour for anyone below the age of 11. On the Day: Please arrive at the Museum 15 minutes before your Public Guided Tour is due to start. On placing your booking, you will be emailed your ticket/s by Eventbrite.
