Cycling Sports & Fitness
The Burnaby local committee of HUB cycling will host a casual social bike ride on Saturday July 5, 2025 at 9:30 am. Everyone is welcome and participation is free of charge, but please register every participant here. We will meet by the Central Valley Greenway on Gilmore Ave (next to Home Depot). Please bring a bike or e-bike and a helmet and aim to arrive shortly before 9:30 am. The ride will take about 2 hours for just over 20 km and end near UBC, where we can socialize over coffee/lunch at a café. You can then choose to ride the bike back or catch a bus. We will take "neighbourhood bikeways" (somewhat quiet streets) and multi-use paths, which are mostly comfortable to cycle on. The distance and pace may be too exhausting for most children, but fairly relaxed for most teenagers and adults, although the uphill sections can be exhausting. The ride will take place rain or shine, but we may cancel for adverse weather conditions or if there is a weather warning. Information Source: HUB Burnaby Local Committee | eventbrite

Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese paper craft with a history dating back over 1,200 years. It has been used to decorate gifts and envelopes for special occasions such as births, weddings, celebrations of longevity, and seasonal festivals. Meaning of the knot Mizuhiki is more than just a beautiful craft; it's also symbolic. The knots themselves are thought to bring people together, with each one carrying a special meaning. One of the knots you'll learn in the workshop is the Awaji knot. This fundamental knot serves as the foundation for many other Mizuhiki knots. Interestingly, the Awaji knot symbolizes an unbreakable bond. Once tied, it cannot be undone, reflecting a relationship that is meant to last. We provide all the materials you'll need to create your chosen project: Earrings Hair ties/ Hair clips/ Hairpins Brooches Keychains Mini envelopes Ornaments to suit your needs You can complete 2-3 projects of your choice during the workshop. Enjoy the Art of Mizuhiki We hope you enjoy learning the art of Mizuhiki through this workshop. Additional Note Our exclusive Mizuhiki craft kits, available only here, will be for sale at the workshop. Please note: We only accept cash payment at this event. We apologize for any inconvenience. About the Instructor Sachie Murukami Despite knowing of MIZUHIKI in my years growing up in Japan, I think as a whole, we do not appreciate nor fully understand it’s meaning. As time goes by, we start to forget why certain things were created for it’s use and purpose. The MIZUHIKI knot is what binds us and brings us together. It’s what holds us together and reminds us to not let go. I found out the significance of this meaning recently and I wish to share it with others. And, I hope that Mizuhiki will continue to be passed down for many years to come as one of the traditional cultures that was infused with various meanings and wishes by ancient people. Indigo Magic with Naomi Yamamoto of Flight Path Designs Step into the mesmerizing world of indigo dyeing with local textile artist, Naomi Yamamoto. In this hands-on workshop, you'll explore the captivating process of Japanese indigo resist dyeing methods, utilizing tools like blocks, clamps, string, and clothes pegs to create intricate patterns on fabric. We'll supply small fabric pieces for creating samples. We kindly ask participants to bring their own pre-washed cotton, silk, linen, or hemp materials for dyeing. This presents an excellent opportunity to reimagine and up-cycle items with the beautiful blue of Indigo. To ensure sufficient space in the dye vat for everyone, please refrain from bringing large & bulky items(maximum 1 metre of fabric). Prepare to gain a foundational understanding of the dyeing process and craft exquisite hand-dyed pieces to cherish. Under Naomi’s guidance, anticipate an event brimming with alchemy, experimentation, and joyful creativity. Materials to Bring: Pre-washed cotton, silk, linen, or hemp materials for dyeing(maximum 1 metre of fabric). Ensure all items undergo pre-washing with a gentle detergent to remove any chemicals that may interfere with the dyeing process. Dress in workshop-ready attire, and if available, bring an apron to protect your clothing. IMPORTANT Blank dye-able items such as cotton shawls, silk scarves, and bamboo socks are available for pre-purchase. Please inquire to the instructor at ( designsbyflightpath@gmail.com ) before the workshop. This workshop is an outdoor event in the Nikkei Garden, but it may be moved in-doors or postponed depending on weather conditions.
