Twickenham Stadium - the 'Home of Rugby' - opened in 1909. Following overwhelming demand for international match-day tickets, the RFU had purchased a 10 acre site near Twickenham, formerly a market garden for vegetables, hence the stadium's nickname the Cabbage Patch. Originally designed to host 20,000 spectators, Twickenham's current capacity is 82,000. Apart from all of England's home matches, it hosts annual prestige games such as Oxford v Cambridge and Army v Navy. It was the venue for the Rugby World Cup finals of 1991 and 2015. ______________________________________ Our tour comprises two parts: a guided tour of the stadium itself followed by a visit to the museum. The tour starts in the stadium, then the Rose and Poppy gates, Spirit of Rugby, Council’s room, President’s suite, The Royal Box and finishes in the home dressing room. Our group then moves on to the museum and we suggest, for those who wish, that we meet in the world famous rugby pub, The Cabbage Patch which is across the road from Twickenham station for a refreshment (not included in ticket price, just to say) if required and then people could wander home when ready. Our tour leader is London Historians member and Blue Badge Guide David Beaumont who is also an official guide with the stadium. _______________________________________ London Historians Members only . Welcome to Foley Fest! Aine Magee AKA Aine Foley died in November 2024 after a long battle with cancer. Aine lived her entire life, worked and died in west London. She was a teacher and spent 24 years teaching at the Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School. Alongside her family, friends and her work, Aine loved her music. In addition, we were particularly helped by two charities: Marie Curie provide a rapid response service in west London. This means specialist nurses were available throughout the night to visit and dispense medication and care as well as advice and support. They also provided staff to sit with Aine through her last nights which allowed family and loved ones respite and sleep. Maggie's are based at Charing Cross Hospital and provided us with a range of practical support such as a place for relatives to base themselves and work whilst Aine received treatment. Counsellors were always on hand as well as advisers on benefits, insurance and what to say to your children. They also provided endless cups of tea and biscuits. We are planning to organise a 'Foley Fest' event in the Summer of 2025 for upto 2,000 people. CVMS have donated their playing fields in Twickenham and Rattle & Hum have agreed to headline. There will be music, singing, dancing and laughter. It will also be an opportunity to raise funds and awareness about cancer support services in west London.
