Sports & Fitness Mountain Biking
This course will equip you with the skills you need to become a mountain bike leader. We’ll cover elements of group management, navigation, trailside maintenance, bike skills, skills assessments and your roles and responsibilities as a mountain bike leader. ' Mountain Bike Instructor Award Scheme' The MIAS scheme is aimed at safely introducing students of all ages to mountain biking in a variety of different venues. The scope of the Level 2 award allows the award holder to lead individuals and groups on lowland mountain biking routes within easy access to assistance in summer conditions. This would mean no more than a 30 minute walk from a telephone and shelter. This is a combined Level 1/ Level 2 training and assessment course. Depending on your previous experience of mountain biking there are a number of possible outcomes from the course: - Level 1 trained. As a candidate new to mountain biking you will leave with the training for L1 completed and will then need to gain further personal riding and group leadership experience and a 16 hour first aid qualification, before attending a one day assessment in the future to gain your L1 award. - Level 1 awarded and Level 2 trained. If you have the first aid qualification and some previous mountain biking experience you may well achieve a L1 award - this means you will be able to lead groups of students on easily accessible, low level terrain, non-technical cycle trails which have easy access should you have a problem. These trails won’t be in remote locations and can include way marked cycle tracks, canal tow paths, converted railways and forest tracks. This would also count as L2 training, before attending a one day L2 assessment. - Level 2 awarded. If you have significant mountain bike skills and experience, demonstrate strong navigation skills and hold a first aid award you may finish the course with a L2 award. The L2 award allows the leader to take groups into more open country, within 30 minutes of assistance, with technically more demanding terrain including loose surfaces, rocky terrain, single track and small drop offs. Course content Safety - Managing risk and risk assessments - Personal and group equipment - Dealing with common incidents - Riding on public highways - Group management and the role of the leader Personal riding skills - Body position - Braking - Cornering - Descending - Ascending - Use of gears - Front wheel lift - Dealing with trail obstacles e.g. small drop Coaching skills - Teaching principles - Look at different teaching styles Maintenance - Bike set-up - Bike safety check - Recording systems - Trail side repairs - Your tool kit Navigation and access - Route Planning - Route finding - Use of map and compass - GPS - Use of cycle computers - Where you are allowed to ride your bike - Access rights and conservation Although this is a full two days of training/assessment we won’t be riding all the time. There will be plenty of time for questions, discussion and hopefully enjoyment. The second day will involve a longer ride than on day 1. What to bring - Mountain bike in safe working condition. The White Hall Centre can supply a bike, but if you wish to do so, please contact us in advance. - Helmet - Gloves - Bike tool kit and spares - First aid kit - Group shelter if owned - A rucksack to carry things in whilst out riding - Appropriate clothing for the weather including waterproof jacket and extra layers! - Appropriate footwear - Food and drink - Notebook and pen - Compass if owned - Riding glasses if owned Course Times 09.00am – 5.00pm each day F or more information about the course, please contact the centre via: Telephone: 01298 23260email: whitehall.centre@derbyshire.gov.ukWebsite: www.whitehall.derbyshire-outdoors.orgHealth and FitnessPlease inform the Centre of any medical condition or medication that we should be aware of. Norwich
Musical Arts
Fellow Norwich music lovers, we're thrilled to bring something truly special to our beautiful city this autumn—a magical evening of Indian classical ragas at our beloved Assembly House on September 19th. As part of this year's Kala Festival, we've arranged an intimate double bill that shows how traditional Indian music can speak to us all, regardless of cultural background: Norwich has rarely heard anything like pianist Deepak Shah's imaginative takes on ancient Indian ragas. His delicate piano work, paired with Saleel Tambe's hypnotic tabla rhythms, creates a heartfelt bridge between East and West. If you've ever enjoyed the piano performances at our local venues, prepare for something that will expand your musical horizons. After the break, we welcome the extraordinary Pundit Debasis Chakroborty, whose Indian slide guitar produces hauntingly beautiful sounds that seem to float through the historic rooms of The Assembly House. With him, we have Ustad Akram Khan on Tabla, 7th Generation exponent of the Ajrara Gharana, considered to be one of the six main traditional schools of tabla in India This isn't just a concert—it's a chance for our community to experience something unique in our city centre. Bring friends, make an evening of it, and add another memorable night to our rich local culture. Doors open at 6:00, and music starts at 6:30. Between sets, there will be time to chat with fellow music lovers over refreshments. See you there, Norwich! ^^ A video from the archive (Kala Festival 2023) Information Source: KalaSudha | eventbrite

Celebration
This Autumn you're invited to join us for a cosy evening within the Victorian glasshouse at Carrow House as we celebrate the seasonal festival of Mabon (Autumn Equinox) with a creative ritual to welcome in Autumn. This two hour session will include a creative nature activity, grounding techniques, seasonal reflections, homemade seasonal treats and hot drinks, see details below: Using foraged foliage and berries from local hedgerows along with aromatic herbs and ethereal grasses, make a wild moon wreath and enjoy an evening of seasonal rituals to welcome in the cosy season. Connect with the changing of the seasons as we create natural moon decorations as a way to reflect and give thanks for the fruits of Summer's growth, slowing the pace as we reach a time of balance between dark and light and prepare for the Winter months ahead of us. This experince is open to any skill level as we will guide you through the creation of your wild and wonderful moon wreath. Creativity and playfullness is at the heart of all we do and we encourage experimentation through your approach to creating the shape of your moon and your choice of materials (we love seeing everyone's personalities emerging from their creations). This is about finding flow, not perfection and the chance to connect with nature in the company of like-minded souls. If you’ve been craving rhythm, creativity, and a deeper connection with nature, yourself and other wild souls, we’d love to rewild with you! * Please Note - Early bird tickets are available for a limited time, see ticket page for options * Information Source: Rewilding Studio | eventbrite

Rock Concerts
Hailing from the North West of England, Xentrix was formed in 1985 by guitar player Chris Astley. After numerous changes to the line up they signed with Roadrunner records and entered the studio to record their first album 'Shattered Existence' with producer John Cuniberti (Vio-lence, Forbidden, Joe Satriani). The nineties saw them play with bands such as Testament, Sacred Reich and pagan thrashers Sabbat. The legendary Tommy Vance of the BBC Radio 1’s Friday Rock Show brought them down to Maida Vale studios to record a session for the show where they performed a thrash version of the 'Ghostbusters' theme tune, which was already a favourite with stage divers at their live shows. Xentrix went on to tour Europe with Canadian label mates Annihilator, open for Brazilian thrash giants Sepultura and tour Germany with Alco-Metal outfit Tankard. 2022 saw the band release their seventh studio recording “Seven Words” Mixed and mastered by Andy Sneap and artwork by Dan Goldsworthy.
