Death Cafe New Westminster
The objective of a Death Cafe is “to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives”. The experience will be a group discussion of death with no agenda, objectives or themes. It is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counseling session. Death Cafes help people talk about death and dying in a supportive, unstructured way.
The Death Cafe model was developed by Jon Underwood and Sue Barsky Reid. It’s based on the ideas of Bernard Crettaz, a Swiss sociologist who believed that speaking about death made people less afraid of it and considered death to be “a lesson in life”. This approach is currently used in more than 81 countries worldwide, and allows individuals to discuss difficult topics, increasing their self-awareness, potentially reducing death anxiety, and augmenting compassionate connections through conversation and personal sharing.
Death Cafes are always free, open to, and respectful of, people of all communities and belief systems, held in an accessible, respectful and confidential space, and have no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action.
