The Closing Concert dedicated to Josima Feldschuh will take place in Newcastle upon Tyne on January 28, 2024. The concert will honor the memory of Josima Feldschuh, a talented pianist and composer from a Jewish family in Warsaw. Despite her young age, Josima possessed exceptional musical abilities and aspired to become a composer. She wanted to show the world that women are not only capable of performing music, but also of creating it themselves. Tragically, she passed away in 1943 at the age of 15 while fleeing the Warsaw Ghetto. Among her belongings, Josima left behind a collection of 17 beautifully handwritten piano pieces that she had composed from the age of 9 until her untimely death. Today, these compositions are preserved at the Yad Vashem Museum in Jerusalem. For the Closing Concert, four of Josima's piano pieces have been selected and will be performed alongside other remarkable works. The concert program will include pieces such as Chopin's Polish songs, R. Panufnik's Votive for string quartet, and Szymanowski's Trois Chansons op.32. One of the highlights of the event will be the premiere of the Brundibár Arts Festival Commission 2024, a composition dedicated to Josima. This piano quintet and tenor piece, written by the Ukrainian composer Volodymyr Runchak, will incorporate excerpts from Josima's father's diary, sung in Yiddish. Volodymyr Runchak, currently a war refugee in Poland near Warsaw, has been commissioned to create this special composition for the concert.
