Crumbs and Chronicles - Lola Montez! | Seventeen Nineteen - Holy Trinity Church
Jun 4, 2025 (UTC+0)
Sunderland
Eliza Rosanna Gilbert was commemorated as a Sunderland Notable by William Brockie. She pirouetted to infamy though as the dancer Lola Montez. Courtesan, royal mistress, double bigamist (and marriage guidance counsellor). She bounced across theatre stages around the horrified world but died in poverty in Brooklyn. I will try to keep up with this remarkable woman and the context in which she flaunted herself. If time allows we will try to replicate the Spider Dance. This is definitely not suitable for those who have high blood pressure. Smelling salts might help those who are easily shocked… Once upon a time Stuart Miller was Head of Continuing Education at the University of Sunderland. After a short burst of Quality Assurance he started a brief contract with the Workers’ Educational Association and was with them for 25 years. He has written/co-written various books and articles on many aspects of history, and claims to be an authority on dragons. He has also written numerous books of walks. He is a volunteer with the Donnison School, the Wearside Field Club and Seventeen Nineteen and was chairman of the Sunderland Heritage Forum.
