About the Books: Book of Potions: Winner of the 2023 Kathryn A. Morton Prize in Poetry, selected by Ilya Kaminsky. Written with tremendous urgency and ferocious candor, the prose poems of Book of Potions captures a woman caught in the middle of life: no longer young, not yet old, trapped between generations, locked in stereotyped roles and stultifying social norms, confined by other people's expectations and their projections of what a woman should be. By turns enraged, funny, frustrated, astute and joyful, these short hybrid pieces (potion = poem + fiction) combine the lyric compression of poetry with the narrative expansiveness of prose. Readers will meander, spellbound, through a wildly imaginative dream world of fairy-tale landscapes, allegorical insights, social satire, thought experiments and vivid surreal imagery, scenes of otherworldly strangeness and haunting beauty. These potions are elixirs in language, some healing, some poisonous, all magical. Ricky: From Whitney Collins, the award-winning author of Big Bad, come twenty-three new dark and derelict (and hilarious) tales about--you guessed it--love. With Ricky, Collins applies her sharp eye, black humor, and generous heart to love stories (and the stories we tell ourselves about love). Among the wacky, tacky, lovesick, and lovelorn characters are: Ilona, the misanthropic mother and unhappy fianc who is increasingly transfixed by a rash of local shark attacks; Imogen, the sperm bank client who cultivates the love she madly desires inside herself; and Aurora Flood, the coma survivor on a mission to plant a sacred seed from the Olive Garden. Blending elements of southern gothic, speculative fiction, and horror, Ricky & Other Love Stories is political and personal, bitter and sweet: ultimately, a lot like love. About the Authors: Lauren K. Watel’s debut book, a collection of prose poetry entitled Book of Potions (potion = poem + fiction), was awarded the Kathryn A. Morton Prize in Poetry, selected by Ilya Kaminsky, and will be published in February 2025 by Sarabande Books. Her poetry, fiction, essays and translations have appeared widely. A native of Dallas, TX, she lives in Decatur, GA. https://www.laurenkwatel.com Whitney Collins is the author of Ricky & Other Love Stories and Big Bad, which won the 2019 Mary McCarthy Prize, a 2021 Bronze INDIES, and a 2022 Gold IPPY. She received a Best American Short Stories 2022 Distinguished Story, a 2020 Pushcart Prize, a 2020 Pushcart Prize Special Mention and won the 2020 American Short(er) Fiction Prize and the 2021 ProForma Contest. About the Book: A witty and whip-smart novel about love, marriage, and family ties stretched thin by ambition. Meet Ethan and Gabe. A devoted couple for years, they have successful careers, an adorable daughter, and a house in the New Jersey suburbs. Sure, they may have drifted to different ends of the political spectrum, but their marriage still has its spark. Then one night Ethan makes an announcement: he wants to run for Congress as a Republican—but only if he has progressive Gabe’s blessing. For weeks a slightly queasy Gabe struggles between supporting his husband and maintaining his own lefty ideals. He can feel himself slowly pulled under the tide of Ethan’s ambitions, even as he becomes widely known as a conservative spouse. In a nearby town, suburban mom Nicole wonders what happened to her younger self—living in New York City, freely dating men and women, and on a path to a career in the art world. Nicole feels like an accessory in her husband’s life and like she’s given up on the goals she had for herself. Then an old flame re-enters her life unexpectedly. That woman is Ethan’s sister Kate. A political reporter at a major newspaper, Kate has reached the top of her profession. But the adrenaline rush of chasing a story has lost its thrill. When Nicole—the woman who broke her heart—slides into her DMs just as her brother starts his controversial congressional run, Kate’s life is thrown into a tailspin that threatens to derail the success she’s worked so hard to achieve. About the Authors: Elizabeth Harris is an award-winning reporter at The New York Times, where she covers books and the publishing industry. “How To Sleep At Night” is her first novel. About the Book: I need a flood in my soul, to carry off all the old drift and the flimsy habits that have extended down to the water's edge. —Harlan Hubbard, Journals Writer, artist, and sustainability pioneer Harlan Hubbard (1900–1988) lived a quiet, unassuming life, and yet he is thoroughly embedded in Kentucky's historical memory. While some may know of Hubbard's shantyboat sojourn on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers with his wife, Anna, or of Payne Hollow, their hand-built homestead, few know the full story. After four decades of transformation, Hubbard emerged in middle age as the rightful heir to the Transcendentalist ethos, ready to envision a unique existence of simplicity and wild beauty akin to that of the revered Henry David Thoreau. In this comprehensive biography, Jessica K. Whitehead reveals why Hubbard is beloved by his fellow Kentuckians and has been an inspiration to generations of readers interested in art, adventure, and environmentalism. Driftwood delves into Hubbard's family background, education, and relationships, and into his theories on art, writing, music, and philosophy. Using journals, letters, paintings, manuscripts, and sketches, Whitehead pieces together the distinct phases of Hubbard's life, providing new insights into his character and legacy. By examining his perspectives on creativity and responsible living, Whitehead connects the early Hubbard, who grappled with his identity and yearned for travel, with the confident and intentional Hubbard of Payne Hollow. Driftwood: The Life of Harlan Hubbard is a complex portrait of a person who deserves a place alongside other iconic American thinkers and artists in the nation's broad cultural history. It offers a vivid depiction of Hubbard, the traces he left behind, and his template for sustainability in our modern ecological landscape. About the Author: Jessica K. Whitehead is the Curator of Collections for the Kentucky Derby Museum, where she has recently written The History of the Kentucky Derby in 75 Objects, published through University Press of Kentucky. Outside of the Derby Museum, Jessica has studied Harlan Hubbard since her student days at Hanover (Class of 2011), curating multiple exhibits in the region and providing the introduction to The Watercolors of Harlan Hubbard, released in 2021. She served as a founding board member of the new non-profit Payne Hollow on the Ohio, where she still manages its collection of artifacts. She is currently a board member for the Kentucky Museum & Heritage Alliance. Information Source: Carmichael's Bookstores | eventbrite

Carmichael's is excited to host Kathleen Driskell for her new poetry collection, Goat-Footed Gods. She will be joined in conversation by Erin Keane. About the Book: In her sixth collection Goat-Footed Gods, award-winning poet, essayist, and teacher Kathleen Driskell seeks to rehabilitate the reputation of the infamous Goatman of Pope Lick, identified by The Washington Post as one of the deadliest cryptids in America. The Goatman or Pope Lick Monster, a legendary creature long rumored to roam the woods around Driskell's Kentucky home, is alleged to have caused the deaths of at least five young people at Pope Lick Trestle, a railroad bridge with a ninety-foot drop at its center. The Goatman lyrics are braided with poems about Driskell’s child’s traumatic injury from a fall. Always at the heart of Driskell’s poetry is her insistence that the path to the sacred is found not through the doctrine of ancient gods, but in walking clear-eyed through the dark woods of our historical past and exploring the never-ending wonder of the natural world. About the Authors: Kathleen Driskell is an award-winning poet, essayist, and teacher and author of six books of poetry, most recently Goat-Footed Gods from Carnegie Mellon University Press. Her poems and essays have appeared or are forthcoming in many nationally known literary publications, including The New Yorker, River Teeth, Appalachian Review, Shenandoah, Southern Review, Rattle and are featured online on Poetry Daily, Verse Daily, and American Life in Poetry. Her awards and honors include a Pushcart Prize, an Al Smith Fellowship, the Denny C. Plattner Award, a Notable listing in Best American Essays 2020, and the Judy Gaines Young Book Award. Past chair of the board for the Association of Writers and Writing Programs (2019-22), Driskell is professor of creative writing and Chair of the Naslund-Mann Graduate School of Writing at Spalding University, home of the nationally distinguished low-residency MFA in Writing Program. Erin Keane is a critic, poet, essayist, and journalist. She’s the author of the memoir Runaway: Notes on the Myths That Made Me (Belt Publishing), one of NPR’s best books of 2022, and editor of The Louisville Anthology (Belt Publishing, 2020). About the Book: The inspiring biography of former women's professional baseball player Maybelle Blair Maybelle Blair's entire life has been about baseball--women's baseball. About playing it, preserving its history, and making it accessible to everyone. A former player for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League that inspired the movie A League of Their Own, Maybelle broke down barriers for women in the sport, continues to be a mentor for young girls who seek opportunities to play, and is an inspiration for the LGBTQ+ community. In All the Way: The Life of Baseball Trailblazer Maybelle Blair, Kat D. Williams tells Maybelle's incredible story. She recounts how, as a young girl in the 1930s, Maybelle and her family built a field where they could all play. In elementary school, Maybelle convinced a teacher that they should have a girls softball team alongside the boys. As her talent grew, so did her opportunities to play at higher and higher levels, culminating with the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. When her playing days were over, Maybelle became the first female director of transportation for Northrop Aircraft, was an advisor for A League of Their Own, helped found the non-profit International Women's Baseball Center, and, at 94 years old, came out to the world. Featuring extensive insight from interviews with Maybelle, All the Way brings to life the struggles and triumphs of female ballplayers in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, as well as the struggles they continue to face today. It also provides an honest look at the dangers mid-20th century lesbians faced and how coming out, even at 94, can be empowering. About the Author: Kat D. Williams, PhD, is professor Emeritus of history at Marshall University, and a founder and current CEO of the International Women’s Baseball Center. She is the author of three books, The All-American Girls After the AAGPBL: How Playing Pro Ball Shaped Their Lives and Isabel Lefty Alvarez: The Improbable Life of a Cuban American Baseball Star and All the Way: The Life of Baseball Trailblazer Maybelle Blair. About the Book: Let's get one thing straight: I am not your chosen one. Forty-five-year-old Imogen has always struggled to fit in, never finding her passion in life. And while that may include having cold feet in her impending nuptials, that doesn’t mean she’s ready to ditch planet Earth—and her entire life—completely. When Imogen is kidnapped by an alien prince in disguise, there’s nothing she can do to stop him. He’s sidhe—a being with powerful abilities—and he’s grown up used to getting what he wants. The prince is convinced Imogen will fall in love with him, and that her new powers, once she’s turned sidhe, will help his country win a centuries-old feud. With the help of the prince’s much more tolerable brother, Imogen starts to get her feet back under her, but even he can’t protect her from those who would use her for her powers. If Imogen can’t find a way to fight for herself, she’ll become a pawn in a world that has already decided what she’s going to be. About the Author: Meredith grew up in New Orleans, collecting two degrees from Louisiana State University before running away to Chicago to be an actor. In between plays, she got her black belt and made martial arts and yoga her full-time day job. She fought in the Chicago Golden Gloves, ran the Chicago Marathon, and competed for team USA in the Savate World Championships in Paris. In spite of doing each of these things twice, she couldn’t stay warm and relocated to Nashville. She owns several swords, but lives a non-violent life, saving all swashbuckling for the page, knitting scarves, gardening, visiting coffee shops, and cuddling with her husband and two panther-sized cats. She’s a member of International Thriller Writers, Sisters in Crime, and the Women’s National Book Association. Her first novel Ghost Tamer is an Amazon Editor's Pick for Best SciFi Fantasy, an IBPA Benjamin Franklin Gold Winner for Best SciFi Fantasy, an IPPY Award Winner for Best First Book, and a Silver Falchion Winner for Best Book of 2023 and Best Supernatural. And then one rainy day she notices a boy getting drenched, and when she invites him under the umbrella with her, things begin to change. This heartfelt story explores how grief, like an umbrella, protects us, but also blocks light from our lives. However, with time and healing and help from a friend, we can lower our umbrella to see the sun. And maybe even a rainbow. About the Author: Amanda Driscoll’s newest picture book, Under Anna’s Umbrella (Penguin/Rocky Pond), illustrated by Luisa Uribe, is her most personal and heartfelt story to date. She is also the author and illustrator of Duncan the Story Dragon, Wally Does Not Want a Haircut, Klondike Do Not Eat Those Cupcakes, and Little Grump Truck, (all from Knopf). Born and raised in Louisville, Amanda lives in Fisherville with her bunny who thinks he’s a dog, her dog who thinks he’s a human, and her husband who thinks he’s always right About Independent Bookstore Day: This national one-day party held the last Saturday in April celebrates independent bookstores across the country. About the Books: Entirely Emmie: Crushes. Camping. MIDDLE SCHOOL. These days, Emmie doesn’t feel so invisible. At least not around her best friends and her crush, Tyler. Class-clown Joe’s jokes aren’t landing the way they used to. Who doesn’t love a good prank? Apparently not his so-called friends, who don’t even seem to care if he’s around. When their class goes on an end-of-year camping trip, Emmie and Joe find themselves stuck together—and expect the worst. But what happens instead turns out to be entirely unexpected. New York Times bestseller Terri Libenson is back with a story about finding friendship in the least likely of places. Stuck: A storm is brewing—in the skies and in Olive’s friend group. Olive is excited to reunite with Max and Bree at Camp Acorn Lake, but the buses have barely pulled away when her two closest camp friends start fighting…and it’s not just a little squabble. They refuse to speak to each other and, even worse, try to make Olive choose sides. Any attempt to smooth things over seems to aggravate them more, leaving Olive stuck in the middle. With Willow enjoying her busy activity and social schedule, Olive has no choice but to spend most of her time with unhappy first-time camper Nat. It’s far from the fun-filled, sun-filled summer she had planned. Luckily, Olive is able to distract herself with a new challenge: pitching a winning plan for improving the camp! Willow, Nat, and even the feuding Max and Bree want to help Olive make the camp a better place, but with all the drama, they’re lacking the teamwork to make the dream work. Can Olive find a way to free herself and her friends from everything that’s holding them back, or are they doomed to stay stuck in their disagreements? New York Times bestselling author-illustrator Kayla Miller returns with another vibrant and emotional story about the joys and challenges of navigating friend groups and the importance of remembering that the only feelings you can control are your own. About the Authors: Kayla Miller is the New York Times bestselling creator of the graphic novels Click, Camp, Act, Clash, Crunch, Break, and Stuck and the coauthor of the Besties series from the World of Click. An author-illustrator and cartoonist with a BFA from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Kayla lives and works in New York. Terri Libenson is the New York Times bestselling author of the Emmie & Friends series and the cartoonist of the (now retired) award-winning comic strip The Pajama Diaries. Terri empty-nests in Cleveland, Ohio, with her husband, Mike. She is the proud mom of two grown daughters and a poodle. Information Source: Carmichael's Bookstores | eventbrite

About the Book: A queer Black feminist debunks the myth of rainbow solidarity, repositioning Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ people at the forefront of queer pasts, presents, and futures Your favorite Black queer studies professor Kaila Adia Story says the rainbow ain’t never been enough in this introduction to the current state of queer intersectionality, or lack thereof. Story argues that to be queer is to be political, and the carefully glittered façade of solidarity in the pride movement veils dangerous neoliberal ideals of apolitical queer embodiment. The rainbow as a symbol of communal solidarity is a hollow offering when cis white LGBTQ people are allowed to opt out of divesting from white supremacy, misogyny, and transphobia. The Rainbow Ain’t Never Been Enuf fills a necessary gap in our understanding of how racism, transphobia, and antiblackness operate in liberal spaces. Black feminist and queer theorist Kaila Adia Story blends analysis, pop culture, and her lived experiences to explore the silencing practices of mainstream queer culture. She touches on cornerstone issues of the movement like the whitewashing of queer history and commodification of pride celebrationsthe appropriation of the Black and Latinx ball scene and culturethe racialized and gendered violence inflicted upon Black trans womenthe exclusion of the lives and work of activists like Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Stormé DeLarverie, and CeCe McDonald from queer historythe lack of remembrance and respect for the lives of the Black and Lantinx queer and trans people who have always been on the frontlines of queer liberationExpanding beyond the classroom, Story utilizes her expertise as a scholar of queer theory to offer readers a comprehensive understanding of how racism operates in these spaces and what we can do to create a more equitable future. About the Author Kaila Adia Story, PhD is an associate professor in the Departments of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Pan-African Studies, as well as the Audre ‪Lorde Endowed Chair at the University of Louisville. She is also the co-creator, co-producer, and cohost of Louisville Public Media's Strange Fruit: Musings on Politics, Pop Culture, and Black Gay Life, a popular award-winning podcast. Her research examines the intersections of race and sexuality, with special attention to Black feminism, Black lesbians, and Black queer identity. In 2017, Dr. Story was named an LGBTQ+ community leader and change maker by NBC’s inaugural #Pride30. In 2021, she was recognized Michelle Obama's non-profit organization, Reach Higher for creating safe spaces for LGBTQ+ students in and out of higher education. Dr. Story was chosen as the 2022 Champion of Pride for the state of Kentucky by The Advocate magazine. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Jaison A. Gardner has been a social justice activist, health educator, and community organizer for more than 25 years. He is the co-producer, co-creator, and co-host, with Dr. Kaila Story, of the internationally recognized, award winning Strange Fruit podcast, which ran for more than 8 years on Louisville's NPR station. A former columnist for LEO Weekly and contributor to the Courier-Journal, Jaison is a frequent presenter, moderator, and event emcee whose work focuses on a variety of issues, especially the intersection of racial justice and LGBTQ liberation. He is a recipient of the Kentucky Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression Leadership Award and is included in the University of Kentucky’s “Kentucky Notable African Americans Database” and The Williams-Nichols Collection, a national LGBT archive and library housed at the University of Louisville. About the Book: Between soup beans seasoned with bacon grease, pot roast, and gravy-drowned meatloaf, Appalachian cuisine is known for featuring plenty of meat. Even seemingly innocent sides like potato salad and mac and cheese often contain animal products. Though adopting a plant-based diet comes with life-changing benefits, it has also stopped many people from enjoying the food they were raised on. Embracing her grandmother's fearless approach to cooking while staying true to her own beliefs, Appalachian vegan Jan A. Brandenburg has diligently worked to create a cookbook that captures the flavor and comfort that came with every bite of her favorites from back home. In The Modern Mountain Cookbook: A Plant-Based Celebration of Appalachia, Brandenburg updates the meals of her eastern Kentucky childhood to make them accessible to everyone—including cooks of any skill level—looking to incorporate more veg-friendly fare into their rotation. From eggless scramble for breakfast to fried chick'n for supper, this innovative cookbook provides readers with an extensive menu of delicious, cruelty-free dishes fit for all occasions. Brandenburg feeds both body and soul as she folds in lessons learned from generations of women and memories of family gatherings around the table with sure-to-please recipes, including creamy potato soup, country-fried steak, roasted jalapeno pimento cheese, hash brown and broccoli casseroles, and bourbon pecan pie. Appalachian and plant-based cooking are no longer at odds—people who love country classics can preserve their culinary traditions while eating a healthier, more ethical diet. With The Modern Mountain Cookbook in one hand and a cast-iron skillet in the other, you can have your pineapple upside-down cake and eat it, too. About the Author: Jan A. Brandenburg is a cook, digital content creator, and pharmacist from eastern Kentucky. Wanting to enjoy the flavors of her childhood without supporting the meat industry, she has spent years developing plant-based alternatives to traditional Appalachian dishes. About the Book: From the horrors of slavery to the battlefields of the Civil War, Lucy Higgs Nichols has become a symbol of resilience and a trailblazer for justice and equality. There are only two known images of Lucy Higgs Nichols, a Civil War nurse who escaped enslavement to join the Indiana 23rd Regiment. In one captivating photograph dated to 1898, the elderly Lucy is the sole female and the only person of color. She stands stately in the middle of a large group of war veterans at a reunion that she diligently attended every year. Some of these soldiers were from the Indiana 23rd Regiment, the men whom she nursed and with whom she marched and fought. These soldiers fiercely advocated for her Civil War nurse's pension in the 1890s. Her story is remarkable--a journey from enslavement in Tennessee, to freedom and service among the ranks of the Union Army, and finally to independence and national recognition from the press, the Grand Army of the Republic, and even Congress. Despite harrowing obstacles and unimaginable pain, Lucy achieved notoriety, nobility, and self-sufficiency in a post-Civil War era that often denied Black Americans and women justice and opportunity. About the Author: Eileen Yanoviak holds a PhD in Art History from the University of Louisville. She is the former Director of the Carnegie Center for Art and History in New Albany, Indiana. She is the co-editor of a collection of essays entitled Formations of Identity: Society, Politics, and Landscape (2016) from Cambridge Scholars Publishing and author of Gaela Erwin: Reframing the Past (2016) from the Speed Art Museum. Instead, she finds the mountain town has a bit of a culture chip on its shoulders, a local busybody is shutting down everything fun, and Lo is fed up and packing to leave. In a peace offering or maybe a plan, Lo hands Dottie the keys to a condemned Red Arrow hardware store and says, Fix it up, and it's yours. About the Book: Revolutionary and visionary, these twenty-two speculative stories edited by Lambda, Nebula and Hugo finalist Lee Mandelo explore the vast potentialities of our queer and trans futures. From self-styled knights fighting in dystopian city streets to conservationists finding love in the Appalachian forests; from social media posts about domestic “bliss” in a lottery-based, state-housing skyscraper to herding feral cats off of one’s scientific equipment; from street drugs that create doppelgangers to dance-club cruising at the edge of the galaxy—Amplitudes: Stories of Queer and Trans Futurity interrogates the farthest borders of the sci-fi landscape to imagine how queer life will look centuries in the future—or ten years from now. Filled with brutal honesty, raw emotions, sexual escapades, and delightful whimsy, Amplitudes speaks to the longstanding tradition of queer fiction as protest. This essential collection serves as an evolving map of our celebrations, anxieties, wishes, pitfalls, and—most of all—our rallying cry that we're here, we're queer—and the future is ours! About the Book: A beautifully written, evocative literary page-turner about a brilliant nineteenth-century female pianist from Poland lost to history and another woman's quest to ensure she is not forgotten--with a shocking twist of a finale. Clara Bishop hasn't touched a piano since a concert hall fire nearly took her life a decade ago, ending her career as a rising star in the world of classical music. Significantly scarred and unable to play, she has turned away from everything and everyone associated with music, especially her ruthless mentor Madame, whom Clara blames for her injuries. Her life is upended when Madame dies, leaving Clara an unexpected inheritance: an ornate nineteenth-century metronome with a cryptic message hidden inside. Convinced this is not a gift but a puzzle Madame wants her to solve, Clara comes to suspect that the unusual bequest is the long-lost metronome of the composer Aleksander Starza--a priceless object missing since 1885, when Starza was murdered by the brilliant female pianist Constantia Pleyel. As Clara works to uncover the metronome's haunted past and protect it--and herself--from those who wish to obtain it, she discovers that nothing about Starza and his murder are what they seem. History has remembered Constantia Pleyel as an unstable artist who killed Starza in a fit of madness. The truth could rewrite the history of music--and give Clara the second chance she has been longing for. About the Author: Sarah Landenwich is a writer and writing educator. Also a classically trained pianist, her debut novel The Fire Concerto was inspired by her love of music of the Romantic period. She lives in Louisville, Kentucky with her husband and daughter.
