Did you know that fall is the best time to start building healthy soil is late summer through fall? Healthy soil not only helps food crops grow, but helps gardens be more resistant to climate change. Come learn some eco-friendly methods to build your soil for a more bountiful garden, feel some different types of soil, and plant some cover crop seeds to help feed you 
and
 your soil over winter!
In the past, people grew Victory Gardens and relief gardens in wartime and during the Great Depression to help provide food for their families, friends, and community, and to boost morale. That's what the Grow Your Own Victory Garden series is about - inspiring and empowering people in our community to grow their own food, whether you have a garden plot, a tiny apartment balcony, or a shady windowsill.
Experienced gardeners or garden newbies, all are welcome!
This workshop is open to everyone, but spots are limited, so be sure to register early to secure your spot. 
If you register but are unable to attend, please cancel your registration to allow someone else to take your spot.

Different methods of building soil health, both in-ground and in containers
Suitable cover crops to protect soil
Plant some seeds to take home!

Pots & soil
Veggie seeds
Handouts
Take home your own potted vegetable seeds to start your winter garden!
There will be a small selection of fall/winter seedlings for sale as well.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Danielle LeBlanc is a garden educator with 15 years of experience in a large wholesale / retail nursery. She has been a member of the Heights Garden Society since 2022. Danielle runs a food blog called Poor and Gluten Free and is the author of 3 allergy-free cookbooks, several novels, and children's activity books.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
*This workshops will take place outside at the Heights Community Garden, dress according to the weather. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and a water bottle.
*There are no bathrooms on site.
*Seating is limited. Feel free to bring a folding chair if you need a seat.

Standing on the top of the park, you can see downtown Burnaby and the mountains in the distance, as well as downtown Vancouver, Stanley Park and the Lions Gate Bridge. The park is rich in vegetation, and you can smell the fresh air of the pine forest while walking along the forest trails. The park is famous for the Kamui Mintara sculptures created by Japanese sculptor Nuburi Toko and his son, which symbolize the harmonious unity of humans, animals, nature and God. The sculpture group consists of 29 hand-carved logs with animal images such as brown bears, owls, salmon and killer whales engraved on them.

Deer Lake Park

If you are looking for a good place to relax around Vancouver, Deer Lake Park in Burnaby is definitely worth a visit! It is like a paradise in the city, with beautiful lakes and mountains.
There is a flat wooden boardwalk around the lake, which is perfect for walking, jogging, or enjoying nature with children and pets. The lake is sparkling, seagulls and mallards are playing in the water, and snow-capped mountains are looming in the distance. The park is free, the lawn is suitable for picnics, and kayaks can be rented on the lake. In spring, flowers are in full bloom, rhododendrons are particularly romantic, and outdoor concerts in summer are even more lively. Especially in autumn, Deer Lake is even more beautiful, and it is a great place to enjoy maple leaves around Vancouver. Parking at Deer Lake is also very convenient, highly recommended!

Central Park

Central Park in Burnaby is a free public facility built for local residents. It has a small golf course, tennis courts, a children&#39;s play area, and several kilometers of trails. The park is densely populated with trees and there are many waterfowl around two small ponds. It is a great place for walking and jogging.
