The Canadian Wildlife Federation is organizing a 
Great Canadian Bioblitz
 from Sept 21 - 28 this year. We are all invited to photograph as many Canadian organisms as possible and to post them as observations on 
iNaturalists
. It will be part of an enormous collaborative selfie of Canada intended to catalogue as much of Canadian wildlife as possible. The information will be used to make informed decisions about land use, environmental policies and wildlife conservation. They ask that we aim for less common organisms to try to fill gaps in the record, and are offering prizes for naturalists who post more than 50 observations.
Ottawa artists: Let's go to Mud Lake together on Sunday September 28th from 12 - 4:30pm to find, observe and photograph as many wild organisms as we can. Let's use it as an opportunity to get together, enjoy wildlife and make friends with other creative locals. It will be the first gathering of the Ottawa contingency of the 
Rewildling Arts Collective
. If you are not yet a member, you can sing up for free, but don't have to.
The outing will be hosted by the 
Biophilium
, an Ottawa based research residency program for artists to study wildlife ecology. This outing will be with a group of artists and several guest biologists and naturalists from the Ottawa field Naturalist Club, so you will have the opportunity to learn directly from experts and ask questions. We plan to focus on plants, birds & fungi- especially lichen. If there is a different group of organisms that you would enjoy learning about please let us know and we will try to find a specialist to walk with us. The $25 fee will go towards covering the cost of hiring naturalist experts to help us find, identify and appreciate species.
Mud Lake
 is a conservation area along the Ottawa River. The area is an exceptionally biodiverse location nestled within the city and is home to many ecosystems. We can expect to see a huge range of wildlife with the help of our experts including birds, frogs, insects, plants, mushrooms, molluscs and sometimes there are mammals like mink and muskrat. We will walk through several habitats including fast moving river, lakeshore, mixed forest, meadow, and wetland. We are aiming to log 250 species together.
The meet up will begin with introductions. (Location and instructions will be sent to participants.) We'll walk for 30 minutes to warm up our eyes and ears and then stop for a quick iNaturalist demonstration. Then we will continue together loosely around the entire loop. It is expected to take 3 hours for us all to get around. We will stop to look at everything interesting and to listen to the shared knowledge of our experts. Participants will be free to wander at their own pace and to focus on what ever interests them most.
At the end of the hike we will come together to report the most exciting observations. Field guides will be available to identify mystery wildlife.
Participants will be offered a free clip on macro lens for their phones and Biophilium stickers. There could be snacks.
This will be an opportunity to find out about the Rewilding Arts Collective, which is part of the Suzuki Foundation, about research opportunities with the Biophilium and to meet local artists and share your ideas and opportunites with the group.
